(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) Our lives are made of good and bad memories. Most of the times we wonder whether these memories will stay with us lifelong or else they will leave us alone some time. But hardly ever do we face them with the intention of bringing them back from the past and give them a present life. Of all the memories I have of my childhood the most recurring one has to be with the country house where I used to live.
We used to call it "Pinetree House" after the huge pine tree in the garden that used to provide us with delicious pine nuts every day. I remember running around the fruit trees and swimming in the pool, which was not built for that purpose but for keeping the water to irrigate the orchard. I even keep pictures of all that, but there is not a single one of the house inside, of which I remember nothing but a blurred image. All in all, for me, it was Paradise. I know that now it lies half abandonned next to newly built ring roads where once only dusty roads and orange trees covered the land. On my mind it is still the big palace where a child spent his innocent years. Do I really want to go Back to the Old House?
John Darnielle, the leader of The Mountain Goats, couldn't help it and here's the story of how he broke into his former dwelling. The song makes us follow him into the rooms and corridors of someone else's house in an intriguing journey. We see a person facing his past to finally come to realize that Paradise is really lost: "Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken" (Genesis 3:23). The biblical quote is the inspiration for this song in the same way as others from Hebrews, Deuteronomy, Romans, Matthew, etc. are for the rest of the album tracks, though none in a religious sense.
Opposite the irrepressible desire to bring the memories of the innocent times to life again, which is present in Genesis 3:23, there lies the fear of the bad memories to which Morrissey sings in The Smiths' Back To The Old House. Whatever you do with them, memories will always have a bittersweet taste, and we have to learn how to live with it. As for me, I think I'd rather look into the future and wonder where I'll be living the next year...
Nuestras vidas están hechas de buenos y malos recuerdos. En muchas ocasiones nos preguntamos si estos recuerdos se quedarán toda la vida con nosotros o, por el contrario, nos dejarán alguna vez en paz. Pero rara vez nos enfrentamos a ellos con la intención de devolverlos del pasado y darles una nueva vida. De todas las memorias que tengo de mi infancia, una de las más recurrentes tiene que ver con la masía donde solía pasar los tiempos de vacaciones.
Lo llamábamos el "Mas del Pi", por el enorme pino en el jardín que del todos los días sacábamos un buen puñado de sabrosos piñones. Recuerdo cómo corría alrededor de los árboles frutales y me bañaba en la poza que no se construyó con tal finalidad, sino con la de almacenar el agua de riego para los huertos. Incluso guardo fotos de todo ello, pero no me existe ni una sola del interior de la casa, que para mí no es más que una imagen borrosa. En definitiva, para mí era el Paraíso. Creo que ahora yace medio abandonada entre carreteras de circunvalación en un lugar donde antes sólo había caminos y huertos de naranjos. Pero en mi mente todavía perdura la imagen de una gran palacio donde un niño vivió sus años más inocentes. ¿De verdad quiero volver a la vieja casa?
John Darnielle, el líder de The Mountain Goats, no lo pudo resistir y aquí está la historia de como se coló en su antigua residencia. La canción nos lleva con él a través de los pasillos y habitaciones de la casa de otros en un viaje no carente de intriga. Nos encontramos con una persona que, enfrentándose a los fantasmas del pasado, llega la conclusión de que el Paraíso está definitivamente perdido: "Y lo sacó Jehová del huerto del Edén, para que labrase la tierra de que fue tomado" (Génesis 3:23). La cita bíblica es la inspiradora de la canción. de la misma manera que otras del Deuteronomio, Romanos, Mateo, lo son de otras canciones del álbum, aunque ninguna lo es desde un punto de vista religioso.
Frente al irrefrenable deseo de recuperar la memoria de los tiempos de la inocencia que está presente en Génesis 3:23, yace el miedo a enfrentarse a los malos recuerdos que canta Morrissey en Back To The Old House, de The Smiths. Hagas lo que hagas con ellos, los recuerdos siempre nos dejarán un sabor agridulce, pero hay que saber vivir con él. Por lo que a mí respecta, creo que prefiero mirar al futuro y preguntarme dónde estaré viviendo el próximo año...
