(ENGLISH AHEAD) Debe ser muy aburrido vivir sin dudas, con la certeza de poseer la verdad absoluta, hablar desde la silla pontificia y no aceptar jamás la discordancia. Pese a lo aburrido de la situación, todos conocemos a gente que se caracteriza por la escasa probabilidad de que algún día te dé la razón en algo, gente que hace de su ignorancia un parapeto que es imposible traspasar con argumentos, por muy abrumadores que sean -de hecho, cuanto más irrefutables los argumentos, más duros son los muros que se levantan frente a los tuyos. Con estas personas, o cesas en tu empeño por convencerles o acabas desquiciado. Si quieres ganarle en algo tendrías que usar la fuerza bruta y meterle un zapato en la boca. ¿Quién no se ha visto en una situación así? Ejemplos hay en nuestro círculo de amistades y conocidos, pero piensen ustedes también en la de políticos, obispos, tertuliano/periodistas y demás malabaristas de la opinión capaces de transformar cualquier debate en un desquiciante partido de frontón.

Precisamente para calmar nuestro instinto asesino, les dejo una de las más preciosas canciones con las que me he topado últimamente. Great Lake Swimmers parafrasea -probablemente sin la menor intención de hacerlo- la famosa contestación de Richard Dawkins "What if you're wrong?" a una estudiante de Virginia que le hacía esta misma pregunta.

Quizá una tercera vía, poco explorada, para enfrentarse a aquellos que no caen del burro sería cantarles suavemente el estribillo de esta bella canción: "piensa que igual va y no tienes razón". Un poco descolocado sí se quedaría y, aunque no cambiara de opinión, por lo menos nosotros nos lo tomaríamos con menos seriedad. A mí mismo me encantaría que me la cantaran, así pillaría la indirecta.

ACTUALIZACIÓN: Curioso que mientras escribía esta entrada, un nuevo Papa era elegido en Roma. Curioso lo que el propio Richard Dawkins escribía en su muro inmediatamente después... Seguiremos cantando.

It must be very boring to live without any doubt, in the certainty to possess the absolute truth, speaking from the papal chair and never accepting disagreement. Despite the boring situation, we all know people characterized by the low probability that someday you'll hear them saying 'you're right', people who build a parapet with their ignorance, impossible to surpass with arguments, however irrefutable they are -in fact, the more irrefutable, the harder the walls are risen up against yours. Before these people, either you cease trying to convince them or you end up going crazy. If you want to beat them on something you would have to use brute force and just stick a shoe in their mouth. Whoever has not been in such a situation? Examples abound in our circle of friends and acquaintances, but think about  politicians, bishops, commentators, journalists and other opinion jugglers who are able to turn any discussion into a maddening pelota game. 

Just to calm our murdering instinct, I leave you one of the most beautiful songs that I've come across lately. Great Lake Swimmers paraphrase -probably without the slightest intention of doing so- the famous reply "What if you're wrong?" by Richard Dawkins to a student from Virginia who asked him this same question. 

In the end there might be a third way, though little explored, to confront those who do not back down easily. What about singing the chorus of this beautiful song? Some would be puzzled at it, though they would not change their minds, but at least we wouldn't be taking it so seriously. I myself would love it to be sung to me, no doubt I'd take the hint.
