Me estaba esperando a que estos chicos británicos editaran su ansiado álbum para dedicarles una entrada, pero ha pasado un año desde que publicaran este primer single y no hay noticias de aquél. Sin embargo, ya tienen dos singles más en el mercado que podrían ser igualmente objeto de mi comentario.

I was waiting for this British band to issue their much expected album to dedicate a post to them, but a year has passed since their first single came out and we're still waiting... Nevertheless, they've issued two more singles which could perfectly deserve a comment here.

Sin miedo a equivocarme, esta banda va a dar mucho que hablar en poco tiempo. Para empezar, Everything Everything (Todo Todo, en español) son originales e innovadores. ¿Quiere decir que no copian y no tienen influencias? Por supuesto que no. Sus influencias están ahí: bandas de los ochenta como XTC por su ruptura de los estándares melódicos de la canción pop, otras bandas como ABC en el uso de los teclados (compárense éstos en Poison Arrow, de estos últimos y en My Kz, Ur Bf, de los Everything Everything) y ciertos guiños al rock progresivo de los 70 por sus guitarreos pseudo-metal y sus juegos vocales, entre los que destacan los agudos de Jonathan al más puro estilo  Chris Martin, el líder de Coldplay. Además, y este es un comentario muy personal, a juzgar por sus vídeos, comparten ese punto de locura y humor tan característico en grupos como Devo. El gran mérito del grupo es saber mezclar todo esto y presentar un producto atractivo y novedoso, pensado para el disfrute y dirigido a todo tipo de público. Posiblemente alguien lo encuentre demasiado "extraño" para sus oídos, muy acostumbrados a melodías y ritmos con velocidades y compases regulares, pero os aseguro que no hay quien se resista a ellos tras dos o tres escuchas. Ellos ya han creado su estilo inconfundible, y es que escuchando sus tres singles (Suffragette Suffragette,  Photoshop Handsome,  y el último, My Keys, Your Boyfriend) vemos que se trata de temas con una estructura muy parecida y unos rasgos distintivos, a saber: bases rítmicas cambiantes durante el tema con compases más o menos veloces según se avanza, estribillos con apoyos vocales de gran riqueza melódica que se superponen unos a otros y una instrumentación basada en una batería vibrante, unas guitarras y un bajo muy versátiles en sus acometidas, sobre todo en sus punteados y un teclado sutil pero necesario en el apoyo de las voces. Todo ello transforma la primera escucha de cualquiera de sus temas en una experiencia poco previsible, donde los cambios te van sorprendiendo y enganchando progresivamente hasta que no puedes dejar de darle al play para escucharlos una y otra vez. Si no me creéis, ahí va eso:

Without a doubt, this band is going to become popular very soon. To begin with, Everything Everything are original and innovative. Does that mean they don't copy from or are influenced by others? Of course not. They are influenced by bands from the 80 like XTC, in the alteration of melodic patterns of standard pop songs, by other bands like ABC in the use of the keyboards (compare ABC's Poison Arrow to Everything Everything's My Kz, Ur Bf) and they give some clear winks to the progressive rock of the 70, its guitar work (so close to today's metal bands) and its beautiful vocal games, standing out from them the highs of the lead singer, Jonathan, so similar to Coldplay's leader Chris Martin's voice. Moreover, I personally think that they also share the same joyous and funny spirit of bands like Devo. Their big merit is to know how to put all this together to present an attractive and singular product, thought for the joy of all kinds of public. Some of you might find the music too awkward, as we're all used to more regular times and speeds, but I can assure you that no-one can resist after two or three listenings. They have already created their unmistakeable own style. If you listen to their three singles (Suffragette Suffragette, Photoshop Handsome, and the latest My Keys, Your Boyfriend) you notice the similar structure and features underneath them: everchanging beats with times speeding up and down all through the track, very rich choruses supported by beautiful armonic voices blending with each other, plus vibrant drumming, versatile guitars and bass guitars, especially when they do the plucking, and a subtle but necessary keyboard sound all over. All this makes your first listening an unpredictable experience, where changes keep surprising you through the song and you start progressively getting hooked on it until you can't do nothing but press play again and again.
