(ENGLISH AHEAD) Y Patrizia cogió su guitarra...

Hace 20 años un jovencita de instituto con voz y pose de colegiala algo "lanzada" se rodeaba de lo mejorcito de la escena rock de Castellón y formaba el grupo Los Romeos para alcanzar lo más alto de las listas nacionales cantando cosas como "muérdeme en el trasero, donde a mí me gusta más", "pienso todo el día en acariciar tu dulce cuerpo hasta llegar al sitio que ya conocemos" y demás proclamas incediarias. Música y mensaje directos a los espíritus adolescentes ávidos de sensaciones, vamos a decir, carnales. Pues bien, Patrizia sigue siendo Patrizia y, aunque hayan pasado los años y haya evidentemente cambiado, me da a mí que el rollo de vender ahora una imagen de madurez y experiencia y decir eso de que "se ha reinventado" no va con ella. En su nuevo y exitoso proyecto, Lula, Patrizia sigue cantando a las emociones más básicas y no abandona la incoherencia de las almas jóvenes, entiendo que porque no le da la gana. Pues me parece muy bien.

Apoyada por Adela Arrufat a la batería y Félix Ribes al bajo, Patrizia Escoín encabeza una banda guitarrera donde las haya, que se mueve (a gusto) en un triángulo en cuyos vértices asoman elementos del punk, el power-pop y el rock. Pero esto no tiene nada de sorprendente. Lo realmente meritorio en este trío castellonense es la libertad y el desparpajo más propio de principiantes que su música destila. No encontramos aquí un pop meticulosamente pensado para gustar, pero tampoco un rock desdibujado y falto de alma. Este tercer trabajo de la formación engancha porque nos reconocemos en él, porque sus notas están en nuestros genes, porque no nos miente... porque sufrimos -rencor, amor, incomprensión- como ellos.

Lula actúan el martes 12 de julio en el escenario Villacamp del FIB 2011, cerrrando así la edición que yo he llamado FLOB (Festival LOcal de Benicàssim) en honor al alto número y nivel de bandas de la provincia que este año participan en el mismo. Esperamos que para todas ellas el festival represente un buen empujón hacia un mayor reconocimiento en toda España...  Europa... USA....

Twenty years ago a teenage girl whose voice and pose made her look a little 'too forward' gathered the best musicians in town to form the band Los Romeos and so hit the national charts singing things like 'bite me on my bum, 'cos there's where I prefer' or 'I do nothing but think of caressing your sweet body the whole day until I get to the place you and I know' and other sorts of exciting harangues. Music and words addressed to ignite the chemistry in the bodies of thousand of teenagers eager to experience new carnal feelings. Well Patrizia is still Patrizia. She's obviously changed, but it looks like she's not the 'reinvention' type. I have the feeling that concepts like 'maturity' or 'experienced' are not in her dictionary for self-definition. In her new project -Lula-, Patrizia still sings about the same basic emotions and she does not get too far from the incoherence which characterizes the young spirit. I guess that's because she wants to show this way. And that's fair enough.

Together with Adela Arrufat (drums) and Félix Ribes (bass), Patrizia Escoín leads the guitar band which moves confortably among the fields of rock, punk and power-pop. But there's nothing surprising in that. What is remarkable is the freedom and ease in their music which one expects to find only in debutants. This is no meticulously-thought pop intended for the masses to like it, nor vague and soulless rock. We get hooked to the third album by the trio from Castellón because we see ourselves reflected on it, because its notes are in our genes, because it does not lie to us.... because we suffer -from resentment, love and incommunication- the same as they.

Lula will be playing at 2011 FIB Villacamp stage on July 12th. I hope the festival will earn them, as well as the rest of local bands, further recognition across the borders of our province, nation, continent.....
