(ENGLISH AHEAD) A pesar del ninguneo de muchos medios de comunicación, que dedican más tiempo a la boda de Iniesta que al conflicto de la minería, la opinión pública lleva varias semanas siendo testigo de las batallas de los mineros para conservar sus puestos de trabajo y obligar al gobierno a cumplir los acuerdos firmados por el Ministerio de Industria para mantener las ayudas al sector hasta 2018. Se podrán argüir mil razones en contra de los combustibles fósiles, claramente condenados a desaparecer mientras las energías renovables se van haciendo camino; pero independientemente de estas cuestiones, hay que reconocer a estos trabajadores su determinación por defender su dignidad y la de sus pueblos. Hay que luchar para exigir alternativas para una cuenca minera que ve su futuro más negro que el propio carbón. Nuestro (?) gobierno, tan acuciado por solventar la crisis de la deuda, se limita a incumplir acuerdos, improvisar medidas y pasar por encima de las necesidades de su pueblo, ya sean mineros, pescadores, funcionarios, pensionistas o amas de casa: todo vale para apaciguar a los mercados. Pues bien, un sector valiente de la población ha dicho que no, que no vale todo, por eso hoy han llegado a Madrid las marchas de mineros que responden con su sudor y cansancio a la inoperancia de los políticos de turno. Mientras, en León, la policía sigue reprimiendo a los manifestantes.
Este escenario de humo y fuego que nos retrotrae a épocas pasadas y que esperábamos no volver a ver no es más que la representación de una eterna lucha de clases que, históricamente, siempre ha acabado con la revolución de los oprimidos. Esos hombres y mujeres que hoy luchan por su dignidad tienen todo mi apoyo.
Smoke and Fire es una canción de la banda hispano-francesa Underwaters. Su primer EP, de música experimental y ecos triphop, a la vez que de un muy personal estilo, nos ofrece un tema casi épico, el perfecto acompañante de la lucha antes mencionada. Con un comienzo de teclados minimalistas que nos recuerdan a Philip Glass, Michael Nyman o Wim Mertens al que se le añade la sugerente voz de Nathalie Cahuzac, la canción avanza a paso firme, con la seguridad que dan los redobles de los tambores, para declarar que de las cenizas nacerá una nueva alma. Música y letra que llaman a la movilización y la esperanza en un futuro mejor que nadie nos va a regalar. Por el camino nos dejaremos muy duros sacrificios.

Despite the avoidance by the media, which spend more time covering Iniesta's wedding than the mining conflict, public opinion has been witnessing for several weeks the battles of the miners to keep their jobs and force the government to fulfill the agreements signed by the Ministry of Industry in order to maintain economic aid for the sector until 2018. There may be a thousand reasons against fossil fuels, clearly doomed to disappear as renewable energies make their way through, but regardless of these issues, we must recognize these workers' determination to defend their own dignity as well as their peoples'. We must fight to demand alternatives to a mining area that sees its future as black as coal itself. Our (?) Government, urged by the EU to solve the debt crisis, is doing nothing but breaching agreements and improvising measures that override the needs of its people, whether miners, fishermen, civil servants, pensioners or housewives: anything counts to appease the markets. Well, a brave sector of the population has said no to anything goes, that's why today the marching minersI have reached Madrid and responded with their sweat and fatigue to the ruling incompetent politicians. Meanwhile, in Leon, the police continues to crack down on protesters.
This scenario of smoke and fire that brings us back to a past that we hoped never to see again is nothing more than the representation of the eternal class struggle that historically has always ended up in a revolution of the oppressed. These men and women who are fighting for their dignity have my full support.
Smoke and Fire is a song by the Franco-Spanish band Underwaters. Their first EP, full of experimental music and triphop echoes, yet having a very personal style, features an almost epic track, the perfect companion to the aforementioned fight. The song open With minimalist keyboards, reminiscent of Phillip Glass, Michael Nyman or Wim Mertens, to which the evocative voice of Nathalie Cahuzac beautifully blends. Then , it progresses steadily, with the confidence supplied by the beating of drums, to declare that "from my ashes I'll get a new soul". Music and lyrics that call for action and hope for a better future which won't be given for granted. The way to it will be paved with big sacrifices.
