(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) The British Isles are still the main source of new talents regarding popular music. The number of female voices that have sprung to general recognition since Amy Winehouse left us is huge. These new artists have great voices, of course, but listening to them sometimes makes you want to go back a few decades and listen to the original, as they sound like perfect copies of someone we used to enjoy (I'm not giving names). Today's entry features a singer whose voice does not resemble any of the old soul dames'. It is natural, modern, sweet and playful. A voice that makes you look ahead.
Josephine sings about being someone you like to be. As a person with African (A-fric-A) and Jamaican origins having been brought up in Manchester, she sends out a message of self-confidence and acknowledgement of how none of us are normal, pure or perfect. We're all freaks living in a melting pot from where we want to stand out wearing different masks that let us be accepted. The line "if you have a mask, put it on" has to be read as the unchanging message in our society from which we all wish to escape, though not everyone manages.
