"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."
Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

Revivifying Breeze (Ben Watt - North Marine Drive)

XIX
"I've been down to North Marine Drive.
A road curling round by your sea
A sea that matches all of your moods

A place where we always agree."

NORTH MARINE DRIVE

1983

Everything in North Marine Drive reminds me of my youth: a teenager's love daydream, the melancholy of feeling misunderstood, the boredom of watching the time go by without doing anything but listening to your own breath, and the smell of the sea in those summer nights when I used to distance myself for a while from the bunch of friends around to fill my lungs in loneliness with a reviving breeze. That's how I rememeber myself and this is how music helped me. I used to listen to the whole album with eyes closed lying on the couch in my parents' house dining room, while they were watching TV in the living room in the last hours of the day. This music was my shelter after a Saturday evening out with friends that would end up in a humdrum night where the excess of beer made me pull such a happy face that it was hard to tell from it that I was just feeling the opposite.

The album title track still refills my batteries. It still recalls truth and joy of life. I just regret the author of this music hasn't gone more acoustic in his ongoing solo career or together with Tracey Thorn in Everything But The Girl, instead of exploiting his techno-DJing side. Here's a rarity made up with a melody already present in today's album, which was renamed On My Mind:

If there is an album worth claiming, this is it. If I ever have to name a favourite song, North Marine Drive would certainly be around the top of my list. I am sure that today it is going to enter your charts as smoothly as "the road that's curling down by your sea" and you're going to feel like standing "with the wind in your mouth on a desolate cliff where once a great castle had been"
