(ENGLISH AHEAD) Benicàssim no podía tardar en dar a luz un grupo eminentemente fibero. Con tres trabajos editados, una buena labor de promoción que ya les ha llevado a ser finalistas del Proyecto Demo de Radio3 y grabar un concierto para la televisión nacional, se plantan en el festival de este año con su último álbum bajo el brazo, Gossip.
A mí me sorprendieron con el EP Living Room, especialmente con la canción que da título al trabajo y con esta It Was My Fault. Estos dos temas condensan la cara A y la cara B de la banda en cuanto a dirección e influencias. Ellos mismos nos dan las pistas en su página web, situando su música entre los ritmos bailables de Franz Ferdinand y el sonido garage de Tokyo Sex Destruction. En el camino de Skizophonic queda el interrogante de saber si el hecho de cantar en inglés les va a suponer una ventaja o un inconveniente. A mi modo de ver, la apuesta es arriesgada. Creo que es el propio grupo el que debe encontrar su estilo y su dirección. Ejemplos como el de The Sunday Drivers, que obtuvieron éxito y reconocimiento dentro y fuera de nuestras fronteras cantando en muy buen inglés, o el de Love of Lesbian, que comenzaron en inglés y no despegaron hasta que se pasaron al castellano -y ahí están arrasando-, son muy ilustrativos. En un caso la apuesta funcionó, en el otro lo que funcionó fue el cambio absoluto de planteamiento. Skizophonic todavía están en período de pruebas, en la búsqueda del tono que les haga suficientemente genuinos para ser grandes, pero en su haber tienen el talento y la dedicación, la pasión y el esfuerzo. Estarán en el escenario Villacamp el lunes 11 de julio dentro de la programación del que yo llamo FLOB -Festival Local de Benicàssim.
It was a question of time that Benicàssim gave birth to a FIB-style band. Skizophonic has already issued three works and their good management has lead them to appear on a national TV show as they took part in last year's Radio3 Proyecto Demo. The band will be playing the songs of their new album Gossip at FIB's Villacamp stage on Monday 11 July.
I was impressed by the EP Living Room, particularly by the title track and this It Was My Fault. These two songs represent both sides of the band's direction and influences. The group itself name those influences and define their style as a mixture between the dance beats of Franz Ferdinand and the garage sound of Tokyo Sex Destruction. Ahead of Skizophonic lies a path where their decision to sing in English still has to prove successful. It is indeed a risky bet, but there's still enough time to play and get the necessary feedback to make a final decision. Some Spanish bands like The Sunday Drivers got recognition singing in very good English, others such as Love of Lesbian started in English and didn't take off until they switched to Spanish. The decision to sing in English worked out fine in the first case whereas in the other it was the change that finally paved their way. Skizophonic are still in the search of the style that makes their music distinct and genuine enough to become big, but they do have the talent, passion and dedication required.
