Hace un par de días volví a hablar con alguien a quien conocí hace 17 años con el cual había perdido todo contacto desde entonces y no esperaba ya retomarlo. Lo primero que sentí es agradecimiento por el hecho de que éste hubiese hecho el esfuerzo de rebuscar por el universo digital para ver si yo estaba ahí. Enseguida mis recuerdos se remontaron a la época en la que convivimos y puedo decir que sólo tuve pensamientos y sensaciones agradables, a pesar de la difícil y peculiar amistad que mantuvimos. La verdad es que fue una época en la que la juventud y la inexperiencia nos jugó una mala pasada a ambos y la relación se cortó de forma abrupta casi sin haber mantenido la conversación definitiva. Es posible que ambos nos dejáramos llevar por la falsa sensación de que teníamos un acuerdo sobre nuestras vidas, un extraño y peculiar acuerdo que no era más que una cómoda máscara tras la cual ocultar nuestros sentimientos. Digo es posible, porque el acuerdo estaba sólo escrito en el aire, y nadie nunca lo llegó a firmar.

Si hay canciones que, de una u otra forma, vienen a tu encuentro y escogen el momento adecuado para aparecer en tu vida, éste el caso de A Strange Arrangement. El tema habla desde el presente del final de una relación pasada, y de cómo ha transcurrido el tiempo desde entonces. Hay algún que otro reproche, pero tras escucharla, uno tiene la sensación de que la felicidad está definitivamente instalada en sus vidas. Sin tomarla al pie de la letra, A Strange Arrangement nos viene a recordar ese "extraño acuerdo" y mantiene con nosotros esa definitiva conversación.

A few days ago, somebody I met 17 years ago got in touch with me for the first time since, just when I had lost all hope to ever know from him again. First I felt overwhelmed and also grateful to see that he had been searching the cyberspace in order to pick me out from somewhere in the digital universe. Then my mind took me back to the time when we shared a part of our lives together and I must say only good and positive feelings came up to me, despite the difficult and peculiar relationship we used to have. The truth is that inexperience and youth played disgusting tricks on us and the relationship was abruptly over without having the definitive conversation. It is possible that we both got carried away by the false impression that we had an arrangement on our lives, a strange arrangement that was nothing but a convenient mask behind which we could keep our feelings from the world. I say it is possible, because that arrangement was only written in the sky, and none of us ever ratified it.

If there are songs that, some way or other, choose the right time to come across in your life, this is the case of A Strange Arrangement. The story in the song is told from the present and tells the reasons why a past relationship failed to succeed and also how things have developed since. There is some reproach on the lyrics, but after listening to it, one has the feeling that happiness has once and for all settled in their lives. Though not taking it literally, the song comes to remind us of this "strange arrangement" between us and holds with us that definitive conversation.
