Cuando era pequeño solía grabar canciones en una cinta BASF con un viejo magnetofón Phillips acercando su micrófono externo al altavoz de la no menos vieja radio también Phillips sintonizada en los 40 principales. A veces, grababa varias canciones seguidas rebobinando el final de las mismas para eliminar la voz del inoportuno locutor que interrumpía los principios y finales de los temas para anunciarnos título y autor. De esta forma, se empalmaban las canciones consiguiendo efectos impensables entre ellas dependiendo de los temas que la emisora radiofónica tenía a bien emitir. A mí me fascinaba ese poder de DJ amateur que me proporcianaba la, por entonces, tecnología punta. Luego escuchaba el resultado en el desvencijado reproductor de cassettes del SEAT 132 de mi padre mientras éste (el coche) se hallaba reposando en el garaje de nuestra residencia de verano y mi padre en la habitación situada justo encima. Muchas veces, la potencia de los altavoces le despertaba de la siesta y yo no tenía más remedio que volver al viejo aparato Phillips.
When I was a kid, I used to record songs on a BASF tape on an old Phillips tape recorder by putting the external microphone of the device close the speaker of an even older Phillips radio while listening to the "Top 40". Sometimes, I used to record a few songs in a row by rewinding the end of the them in order not to have the voice of the DJ on the tape and then pressing the REC button as soon as he finished announcing the track title and the name of the band. This way, an amateur non-stop music effect was created by such high technology and so I considered myself a really powerful DJ. Then, I used to play the result of these recordings on my dad's old-fashioned SEAT 132 car audio as it rested in my parents' summer residence garage and my dad was having a siesta on the floor immediately above. The full blast of the speaker in the car would occasionally wake my dad up and I would need to fall back on the old Phillips device.
La primera vez que escuché a The Go! Team fue a través de un fichero mp3 descargado de la popular "mula". Se llamaba Doing It Right y la escuchaba incesantemente, solo me molestaba no haber podido descargar una versión mejor, convencido de que esa simplemente era un fichero comprimido a muy bajos bitrates. La calidad de ese sonido me recordaba al de mis viejas cintas BASF. Cuando compré el CD original pensé que el lector láser de mi reproductor necesitaba una limpieza. Me costó reconocer que The Go! Team realmente sonaban así. Y la verdad es que ya no los entiendo de otro modo. Escuchadlos y luego hablamos.
The first track I heard by The Go! Team was an mp3 file downloaded from the Net. It was called Doing It Right and I used to listen to it constantly, though I was a bit annoyed by not having downloaded a better file, as I was convinced that one was zipped to a very low bitrate. The quality of its sound reminded me of the old BASF tapes I used to record. When I bought the original CD I thought my CD laser needed thorough cleaning. It took me a long time to admit that The Go! Team sounded just that way. And the truth is that I don't believe they will ever sound different now.
El pastiche que aquí tenemos es importante... Primero porque lo que parece es lo que es... Parece grabado en un garaje, y si bien sus primeras grabaciones sí lo fueron, el nuevo álbum ha sido deliberadamente grabado de manera que no creamos lo contrario. Segundo, porque la mezcla de géneros (rap, funky, rock, pop...) y de samplers es abrumadora. El resultado es simplemente genial.
The mixture we have here is a real big one... To begin with, what you hear is what it is... I mean, it sounds as if it were recorded in a garage and, though their first recordings were, the new album has deliberately been recorded so that we can't think the opposite. To finish off, the mixture of styles (rap, funk, rock, pop...) and of sampling is overwhelming. The result is simply awesome.
The Wrath of Marcie suena a tantas cosas que la primera vez que la escuchas, parece que estás escuchando 10 canciones juntas, y te evoca tanto los años 70 como sonidos más contemporáneos. El rap está ahí para darle el toque actual, pero esta mezcla forma un todo digno de admiración. Esto es extensible al resto de temas de la banda: Ladyflash, Huddle Formation, Grip Like A Vice...
At first listening, The Wrath of Marcie sounds like many other things, it's like listening to ten songs at a time. It takes you back to the 70s but it also contains traces of contemporary music. Rap is there to give it a connection to modern times, but the blending is just admirable. The same can be said for the rest of the tracks of the band: Ladyflash, Huddle Formation, Grip Like A Vice...

Sólo me queda una duda. ¿Cuál sería el resultado de esta historia si la producción fuera deliberadamente cuidada? Me parece que The Go! Team han creado una imagen de marca que lleva consigo el concepto de "hágalo usted mismo" y que su música funciona precisamente por eso. Que no cambien.
Only one question is left: what would the result be if the production was a standard one? I think that they have created a brand image which goes hand in hand with the D.I.Y. concept and their music works precisely because of it. I wish they never change that.
