"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."
Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

Guy Meets Guy (Pansy Division - Sweet Insecurity)

XIV
"Now that I've got what I said I want, what on earth do I want now?"

SWEET INSECURITY
Pansy Division
Absurd Pop Song Romance
Lookout
1998

Today's chapter opens with good vibration songs. This one in particular reasserts my convictions and makes me fly high every time I listen to it.

For those who don't know about Pansy Division I'll start by saying that it's an American band of the so-called Queercore movement; without labels, just a punk-rock band. Or so it was, at least in their early years, for they have been softening their music to reach even the borders of rockabilly or country. Their lyrics have also dealt with other topics different from gay love and sex, which is not necessarily a relief, since we have been able to learn how to exercise Alpine Skiing in a different way or the other meaning of the word Vanilla, all thanks to their lyrics. We owe them such "educational" playful lyrics as No Protection. All their music is prejudice-free and their explicit lyrics deal without concealment about the lives of men who love, fuck, fall in love and split up (I Really Wanted You)... who hasn't ever?

With today's song, Pansy Division make a homemade philosopical "tractatum" and, as a self-help books do, show us another way to reach peace of mind. The whole world is seeking happiness through perfection and security in the couple and eventually we come to learn that it is the sweet insecurity that keeps us alive, that we can live our lives more intensively thanks to the doubt that never dies. Jon Ginoli sings "my dream came true, here I am with you, what comes next, I haven't a clue"

Many listeners might say that the song goes far beyond this interpretation and it is nothing but an apology of free love, open relationships or even promiscuousness. But I prefer to leave a more open meaning to it. In the end, what remains, after listening to it is but a sense of deep joy and yearning for life.
