"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."
Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

Being Someone (Josephine - A Freak A)

"If you have a mask, get it out and put in on"

2012

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) The British Isles are still the main source of new talents regarding popular music. The number of female voices that have sprung to general recognition since Amy Winehouse left us is huge. These new artists have great voices, of course, but listening to them sometimes makes you want to go back a few decades and listen to the original, as they sound like perfect copies of someone we used to enjoy (I'm not giving names). Today's entry features a singer whose voice does not resemble any of the old soul dames'. It is natural, modern, sweet and playful. A voice that makes you look ahead.

Josephine sings about being someone you like to be. As a person with African (A-fric-A) and Jamaican origins having been brought up in Manchester, she sends out a message of self-confidence and acknowledgement of how none of us are normal, pure or perfect. We're all freaks living in a melting pot from where we want to stand out wearing different masks that let us be accepted. The line "if you have a mask, put it on" has to be read as the unchanging message in our society from which we all wish to escape, though not everyone manages.

So, sit back, relax and enjoy the uplifting mood of Josephine's A Freak A.

CIX
"You got the words
Baby, you got the words"

ARETHA
Rumer
Seasons Of My Soul
Atlantic
2010

She does not have Rihanna's body, Lady Gaga's eccentricity or shares the confused mind of Amy Winehouse's. She is just a woman who sings beautifully and moves you with her warmth. She's got soul. Being compared with Karen Carpenter has not come to her discredit; way the opposite, anyone can tell her voice is genuine and there is no intention to fake it. For all these reasons Rumer is not being paid attention on Spanish TV and radios. She is too good to mix up with the rubbish that is being aired in the media.

Amidst the turmoil caused by the Pope's visit to Spain, from which it seems so hard to escape, we still have a way to find a redoubt of peace and quiet in our souls. Just listen to Rumer, or Aretha, for they do got the words.

¡Vamos a cien! (Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. - Record Collection)

"I only want to be in your record collection"

2010

(ENGLISH AHEAD) What You're Missing llega hoy a la entrada número 100.

Ahí van las We Are Golden.

This is the blog's 100th post. As some of these have featured two or even three songs, it makes more than one hundred songs altogether since December 2009. I have tried not to bore people with the same kind of stuff, that's why I have adopted an ecletic approach to it. Many different styles and topics have been dealt with, and they have not been deliberately chosen. Most of the times it was world events going on or others happening around me that set fire to this or that reflection. Some posts showed a deeply ideological stance, others were just based on trivial stuff. Some were strictly focused on music, concert reviews and even interviews with the artists. Moreover, some have become the last farewell to my beloved ones.

Knowing that such eclectic view is not advisable if you want to succeed in the blog scene, since the blogs that really hit the show are specialized in one thing, I want to reaffirm the peculiarity of the one you're reading, which is not having a preference towards a specific music style. You've listened to French music, Italian music, film soundtracks, new age, pop, techno, ambient, rock, americana, folk, instrumental... and a lot of  indie, of course. A lot of styles are left to be dealt with, many countries to visit, and many emotions to feel, yet that will start tomorrow. Now it's time to enjoy the day with a song whose chorus reflects exactly what my aim has been for the past 19 months: "I only want to be in your record collection". If any of you has ever felt touched by any of the songs posted here, I am more than happy with it. Communication succeeded.

PS1: I have just learnt that this song is on FIFA 2011 videogame, which means I have to betray my aim not to post any song that goes previously mainstream. As I am not into videogames, I'll just look the other way.

PS2: We'll talk about Mark Ronson on another occasion. One thing you should know is that he was the producer of Amy Winehouse's Back To Black. Further information here.

PS3: As for the ranking of the most visited posts during this year and a half, just check the gadgets on the right column. Now I wish to highlight the least visited one, and maybe give it a second life. The band does not deserve such oblivion. There you go, We Are Golden.
