(ENGLISH AHEAD) Mi última entrada decía Puede que ocurran cosas. Efectivamente, han pasado. Unas han sido esperadas, demasiado esperadas. Cuando los entresijos de un sistema podrido van quedando al descubierto, nada de lo que hace esa maquinaria te sorprende. Y además, se hace muy fácil predecir cuál va a ser el siguiente movimiento.

El tiempo que ha pasado entre entrada y entrada, mayor de lo previsto, lo he dedicado a viajar en el más profundo sentido de la palabra. Ha sido un viaje para conocer, sobre todo, a la gente de otro país. No importa cuál. Salir de tu comodidad, de tu contexto habitual es una excelente manera de desintoxicarte de tanta contaminación verbal y de relativizar. Cuando estás con personas que cobran 300 euros al mes, viven en un piso alquilado compartido que cuesta 400 en un país donde un cartón de leche vale más que en el Mercadona de la esquina y aún así ven la vida con optimismo y no dejan de hacer planes de futuro te das cuenta de que por mal que vayan las cosas, tu desgracia siempre será relativa.

Por eso es necesario ser optimista y decidido. Si una realidad no te gusta y no la puedes cambiar, siempre habrá un lugar, con otra gente, con otras posibilidades, donde te puedas realizar y no tengas que estar en un constante estado de semi-cabreo. En algún lugar, los problemas desaparecerán. O eso cree el sueco Kristian Matsson, alias The Tallest Man On Earth.

 

La influencia de Dylan es más que evidente, pero suena muy personal y Kristian no hace más que capturar la esencia del maestro para escribir una historia llena de luz y de vibraciones positivas. The Tallest Man On Earth crea paisajes donde el vigor y la ternura conviven en perfecta armonía. Otra grata sorpresa que nos llega de Escandinavia, a la que hay que sumar verdaderos fueras de serie como Joel Alme, Montt Mardié o los consagrados Kings Of Convenience.

 

My last post was about things about to happen. Indeed, they have. Some things were expected, too expected. When the intricacies of a rotten system become exposed, you can't be surprised by anything this machinery accomplishes. Moreover, it is very easy to predict what will the next move be. 

Inbetween posts, a longer time than I expected, I've spent my time travelling in the deepest sense of the word. I've done so in order to meet people from another country, no matter which one. Moving away from your comfort, your usual context, is a great way to detox from verbal pollution and to put things into perspective. When you're with people who are paid 300 euros a month, who live in a shared flat worth 400 a month in a country where a carton of milk is more expensive than at your local supermarket and still see life with optimism and do not stop making plans you realize that no matter how bad things are going, your misfortune is always relative. 

Therefore it is necessary to be optimistic and determined. If you do not like what's going on and there seems to be no way you can change it, there is a place where you will be surrounded by other people, where other possibilities will arise, where you will be able to fulfill yourself instead of being constantly half-pissed-off. Somewhere the troubles will be gone. Or so it seems to the Swede Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man On Earth. 

Dylan's influence is most evident, but it sounds very personal though because Kristian merely captures the essence of his master to write a story full of light and good vibes. The Tallest Man On Earth creates landscapes where vigour and tenderness coexist in perfect harmony. Another pleasant surprise that comes from Scandinavia, one more to add to my list of favourites coming from up north: Joel Alme, Montt Mardié and the consecrated Kings Of Convenience.

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Dicen que en tiempos de crisis se ponen a prueba las relaciones humanas. Cuando ya no confiamos en la política, los bancos ya no muestran su cara amable y las susceptibilidades están a flor de piel, corremos el peligro de ahogarnos en nuestra propia bilis. Porque a la situación apocalíptica mundial que nos quieren vender día a día hay que sumar nuestros pequeños y grandes problemas diarios, a veces no menos apocalípticos e intentar, a pesar de todo, salir a la calle mostrando la mejor de nuestras sonrisas.

El típico "al mal tiempo buena cara" no sería tan fácil si alguien no nos pusiera un paraguas cuando cae el mayor chaparrón, alguien que cierra los cajones que te dejas abiertos, que compra el pan cuando tú te olvidas, que te sorprende con la mesa puesta cuando llegas tarde o que te declara su amor antes de caer rendido por la noche. Y te lo ponen más fácil incluso aquellos que, sin vivir bajo tu mismo techo, te demuestran que cuentas en sus vidas con un gesto, un mensaje o una llamada inesperada. A lo que vamos; a todos nos gusta ir por libre y más de una vez nos quejamos de las ataduras que nos unen a ciertas personas, voluntaria o involuntariamente. Pero, sea o no por una cuestión de estrategia, lo cierto es que las personas nos necesitamos mucho más de lo que quisiéramos.

De esto nos habla el sueco Joel Alme en If You Got Somebody Waiting. Una canción sorprendentemente corta para los estándares actuales -sólo 2:30- que no necesita ni un segundo más porque es más que completa. El sonido años 60 que evoca grandes nombres de la música de ambos lados del Atlántico no va en su detrimento, ya que suena fresca, actual y libre de prejuicios. Toda la discografía de Joel Alme, todavía corta, es muy reivindicable y su música tiene un futuro más que halagüeño. Leyendo reseñas por la web, Joel ha sido comparado con gente como Bruce Springsteen, Neil Hannon, Scott Walker o Jacques Brel, "casi ná", y no seré yo quien diga que no, pero algo hay en la voz y la música de este chico que me huele a auténtico. Quizá por eso no lo oyen ustedes en las radiofórmulas.

It is said that in times of crisis human relations are put to the test. When we do not trust in politics, banks no longer show their friendly face and all sensitivities are skin-deep, our blood is in danger of getting to the boil. To the global apocalyptic situation we are forced to gobble up every day we must add our daily big and small problems, sometimes as apocalyptic as those and try, in spite of everything, to leave home each day showing the best of our smiles.

Putting a brave face would not be so easy if someone does not put an umbrella over us when there's heavy rain out there, someone who closes the drawers you leave open, someone who buys the bread when you've forgotten, someone who lays the table and has prepared tour meal when you arrive late or says I love you before falling asleep at night. And it gets easier even when those not living under your same roof show you with a gesture, a message or an unexpected call that you mean something to them. We all like to be independent and more than once we complain about the ties that bind us to certain people, voluntarily or involuntarily. But whether or not a matter of strategy, the fact is that people need each other more than we wished.

This is what Swedish singer Joel Alme tells us in If You Got Somebody Waiting. A surprisingly short song by today's standards, -only 2:30- that does not need a second more because it is more than complete. The 60's sound that evokes great names in music from both sides of the Atlantic does not discredit it, because it still sounds fresh, up-to-date and free. The whole discography of Joel Alme is still short but it is certainly one to be claimed and has a promising future. In some reviews on the web, Joel has been compared with people like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Hannon, Scott Walker and Jacques Brel, and I won't say it's wrong, but there is something in the voice and music of this guy that really sounds authentic. Maybe that's why you won't see him on Spanish TV.
