(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) Mr Zapatero, Head of the Spanish Government, after a tour in a limousine around the walls of the Vatican City, was offered a traditional Roman lunch by the best-reputed cook in town, then given a book about the Borggia period in the Vatican as a present and later, the doors to the main balcony in Saint Peter's Basilica opened for him to give his long-prepared speech while overlooking Bernini's Piazza di San Pietro to a crowd of socialists who were given Spanish flags to wave at the sight of the leader. 'I condemn the years of infamous silence of the Chrurch over the cases of sex abuse on children carried out by some of its members, the lack of democracy in the state of the Vatican, the situation of women within the organisation and the lack of equality in their rights, not to mention the hypocritical stance that the official Church holds towards sexual education and the pain caused in millions of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people by its inflammatory words. I also urge the Pope to immediately change his position over the use of condoms in order to prevent AIDS from spreading all over the world, especially in the African continent.' After this speech Pope Benedict XVI shook hands with Mr Zapatero and saw him off with a grin on his face, thanking him for his words. 'Don't worry, next year I'll be back with the same old story...', he replied.
The situation above will never take place, but we've recently had it in reverse, strange as it may seem. I was longing for the right time when I could publish this song by XTC. I knew it would not take long, and eventually Pope Ratzinger has given cause for it. On his recent visit to Santiago and Barcelona, he has shamelessly stated his vision on Spanish domestic issues, criticising bills that have been passed by our democratically-elected Parliament. The Catholic Church in Spain, despite our country being a non-confessional state, still gets millions of euros from public funds per year, still has privileges over the rest of confessions and retains part of the political and social influence that it used to hold during the forty years of Franco's dictatorship thanks to a well-organised network of ultra-Catholic organisations whose members are scattered within the most powerful management spheres of banks, media corporations and, of course, the Spanish right-wing Popular Party. Nevertheless, the Pope seems to think he has the right to come to a place where not everybody is a catholic and question how we should legislate. I mean, if you think so, fair enough, but then just stay home and say what you wish from THERE. Why? Simply because you can't teach us democracy.
XTC's song is self explanatory, and I've nothing to add. The Pope's Holy Book speaks of many things, some of them good, but they use it as a weapon. So I'd rather keep off it and read something else. Against the end of the world that they preach, just let the day begin.

El Sr. Zapatero, presidente del gobierno español, después de un tour en limusina alrededor de los muros del Vaticano, degustó un suculento y típico almuerzo romano preparado por el chef más reputado de la ciudad, recibió como regalo un libro sobre el Papado de los Borgia para, seguidamente, ser invitado a ofrecer un discurso desde el mismísimo balcón de la Basílica de San Pedro ante una congregación de socialistas a los que previamente se les había obsequiado con banderitas rojigualdas que ondear ante la presencia de su carismático líder. "Condeno los años de infame silencio que la Iglesia ha mantenido sobre los casos de abusos a menores perpetrados por algunos de sus miembros, la falta de democracia en el estado Vaticano, la situación en desigualdad de derechos de la mujer dentro de la Iglesia, asímismo, condeno la postura hipócrita que sostiene la misma en el tereno de la educación sexual y el dolor causado a millones de gays, lesbianas bisexuales y transexuales por sus incendiarias palabras sobre ellos. Igualmente, conmino a Su Santidad a que cambie su discurso en contra del uso del condón como medio para prevenir le epidemia del SIDA en el mundo, especialmente en el continente africano." Tras estas palabras, el Papa Benedicto XVI le dio la mano al Sr. Zapatero y le sonrió, como dándole las gracias por ello. "No se preocupe; el año que viene volveré con la misma cantinela..."
Esta situación jamás se dará, pero por extraño que pueda parecer, nosotros la hemos vivido recientemente solo que al contrario. Ya tenía ganas de publicar esta canción de XTC, solo estaba esperando el momento adecuado. Sabía que no iba a tardar, y finalmente, el Papa Ratzinger me lo ha puesto a huevo. En su reciente visita a Santiago y Barcelona ha tenido la desfachatez de meterse en asuntos de política doméstica española y criticar las leyes que nuestro parlamente democráticamente elegido ha aprobado. La Iglesia Católica en España, a pesar de vivir en un estado aconfesional, todavía recibe ingentes cantidades de dinero de las arcas públicas, tiene privilegios por encima de otras confesiones y mantiene parte del poder y las influencias que forjó durante cuarenta años de dictadura de Franco gracias a una red de organizaciones ultracatólicas cuyos miembros copan los órganos de poder de bancos, medios de comunicación y, cómo no, de la derecha más recalcitrante del Partido Popular. Sin embargo, el Papa parece estar convencido de que tiene derecho a venir a un país donde cada vez hay menos católicos a cuestionar qué y cómo legislamos. A ver, si no te gusta lo que hacemos, de puta madre, pero entonces te quedas en casita y allí dices lo que quieras. Más que nada porque tú no eres un ejemplo de democracia.
La canción de XTC simplemente no necesita comentarios. El libro sagrado de Benedicto habla de muchas cosas, algunas incluso buenas, pero solo lo saben utilizar como arma arrojadiza. Así que me mantengo lejos de él y me leo otras cosas. Contra el fin del mundo que ellos predican, dejemos entrar la luz del día.
Y por si la postura de XTC (y la mía) no ha quedado lo bastante clara, escuchad y leed lo que cantaban unos cuantos años atrás.
