(ESPAÑOL TRAS EL VÍDEO) I've been waiting for this moment for a long time ever since I started this blog. I had already come across this song -can't remember how- and I thought it deserved an entry. The lyrics and video don't add much to my personal view on the song but what's remarkable in Silversun Pickup's music is the blending of the grunge influences with bits and pieces of prog rock and metal, to accomplish a dark though emotional pop-approached style where guitar riffs and bass lines play a major role, not to mention Brian Aubert's peculiar voice, which heats up the initial coldness that the listeners face the very first time they meet these sounds. According to the Wikipedia, it's the singer that has a lazy eye, thus the title. The scientific term to it is amplyopia, a brain disorder that results in poor vision in on only one eye, which happens to have no physical malformation whatsoever. I used to have a classmate at primary school with such problem, and everyone could notice about it because he had this patch on his eye that made him look like a pirate's apprentice. I was shocked to learn that the patch was not on the ill eye but on the sane one. As a child, the reason for that took me a long time to understand: you need to deactivate what is working nicely in order to activate the part of your brain that is lacking in activity. I tend to interpret that the brain is naturally lazy and it will just turn to the hardest rock if not kept moving. Knowing that, eye-laziness has become a metaphor of the attitude towards personal development that I intend for myself. In fact, I keep wondering why we don't see half the population in the world proudly wearing patches on one of both eyes.
Llevaba esperando este momento mucho tiempo desde que comencé este blog. Ya conocía la canción -no recuerdo de qué- y siempre he creído que merecía una entrada. La letra y el vídeo no añaden nada especial a mi propia impresión sobre el tema, pero lo que es verdaderamente destacable de la música de Silversun Pickups es esa sabia mezcla de grunge con una pizca de rock sinfónico y metal que resultan en un estilo dirigido a presupuestos más pop. La peculiar voz de Brian Aubert descarga algo de la frialdad con la que se perciben sus sonidos en una primera escucha y ayuda a dotar de algo de calidez a ese toque oscuro pero intenso de los riffs de guitarras y bajos, que son los que llevan la voz cantante en esta banda. Precisamente, el ojo perezoso del que, según la Wikipedia, sufre Brian, es el que inspiró este tema. El nombre científico de la enfermedad es ampliopía, y se trata de una disfunción cerebral que resulta en una vista pobre y deformada en un solo ojo, el cual, por otra parte, no presenta signos de tener ningún defecto físico. Yo tenía un compañero de clase en primaria que tenía este problema, y era evidente que algún problema tenía porque nadie nos explicábamos a santo de qué venía a clase con un parche estilo pirata por debajo de sus gafas de culo de vaso. Me costó entender, desde mi mente infantil, que era precisamente el ojo sano, y no el otro, el que llevaba tapado, para así hacer trabajar a aquél que precisamente no funcionaba del todo bien. O sea, que para activar partes que no chutan hay que desactivar lo que va de puta madre. O lo que es lo mismo, concentrar las energías en superar las incapacidades. Para mí, el ojo perezoso se ha transformado en una metáfora sobre la actitud que deseo en mi desarrollo personal y por eso me pregunto tantas veces por qué no vemos a media humanidad pasearse orgullosa con un parche en alguno de sus dos ojos.
