I learnt about Garrett Wall in the most unsual way. Prudent as I am, I hardly ever take a step without thorough planning, and this applies also to the unpericulous action of buying a CD. Nevertheless, on this particular day, I entered a second-hand shop to search for CD bargains and came across one whose cover reminded me of that of Bob Dylan's Street Legal. "Will it sound similar?", I wondered. I took a further look at the booklet inside and saw the lyrics and a photograph of the guy walking through a crowded street in the famous El Rastro flee market in Madrid and another one of the musicians in a sort of typical tapas bar. I took the risk of wasting 2.5 euros and bought it.

Conocí a Garrett Wall de una forma realmente inusual. Siendo como soy tan prudente, rara vez corro riesgos innecesarios sin haber valorado convenientemente la situación, y eso se puede aplicar a acciones tan poco peligrosas como la de comprar un CD. A pesar de la prudencia, un día entré en una tienda de segunda mano buscando ofertas de CDs y me topé con una carátula que me recordó a la de Street Legal de Bob Dylan. Me pregunté si sonaría parecido. Le eché un vistazo al cuadernillo interior y vi una foto del hombre paseando por el Rastro madrileño y otra de los músicos en un típico bar de tapas de la capital. Me arriesgué a malgastar 2 euros y medio y me lo compré.

It looks like Bob is waiting for a bus to stop, while Garrett just follows with his look the one that has just passed by. Bob is somewhat impatient whereas Garrett shows quite a relaxed pose, at least not worried of not having taken it. I quite like the attitude of doing your job honestly without desperatly waiting for your train to catch and taking a smaller carriage that suits you later on, probably one that you've built yourself. Don't forget trains and buses are usually packed up with people trying to get to the same destination as you in a rush hour... 

Parece que Bob esté esperando un autobús, mientras Garrett simplemente sigue con su mirada uno que acaba de pasar. Bob parece impaciente mientras Garrett muestra una pose relajada, al menos no está preocupado por no haberse subido a ese bus. Me gusta bastante la actitud de quien hace su trabajo honestamente sin desesperarse por coger ese tren que considera suyo y toma, sin embargo, un pequeño carro que le va perfecto más adelante, probablemente porque se lo ha construido él. No olvidemos que los trenes y autobuses van siempre llenos de gente que intenta llegar al mismo sitio que tú en hora punta...

Seeing where Garrett Wall has ended up, I think he's chosen the right way. In this new chapter, he joins a group of talented musicians to form a band that takes a step beyond to what he showed in his earlier work, broading the spectrum of his potencial audience, with a slight folk-oriented sound, highlighting the acoustic elements of his music, and the exploration of the possibilities of blending string and wind instruments together to create joyous sound. His beautiful and personal voice draws the continuing line from the essence of a great musician to the present reality of a true artist.

Viendo donde ha llegado, creo que Garrett ha escogido el camino acertado. En este nuevo capítulo, se une a un grupo de músicos llenos de talento para formar una banda que da un paso más allá de lo que nos mostraba en sus primeros trabajos. Así, amplía el espectro de su público potencial con un sonido suavemente orientado al folk, remarcando las características acústicas del mismo y explorando las posibilidades que le ofrecen la mezcla de los instrumentos de cuerda y los de viento para crear una música verdaderamente gozosa. Su preciosa y personal voz traza la línea de continuidad entre la esencia de un gran músico y la realidad actual de un verdadero artista.

After the necessary introduction, let us listen to today's song, because there's little more to say. Rarely do two minutes fifty seconds of music leave such good taste in our mouths as Is There No Freedom does. Musically, it has clockwork precision. Lyrically, it is simple and direct, and shows both melancholy and life's acceptance as it is. The vocals of Lua, from the Spanish band We are Balboa, becomes the perfect combination to Garrett's. Just as it happens in The Swell Season's Low Rising, another milestone of songs about relationships in the couple.

Tras la necesaria introducción, escuchemos la canción de hoy, porque realmente hay poco más que decir. Rara vez dos minutos y cincuenta segundos de canción dejan tan buen sabor de boca com Is There No Freedom. Musicalmente, funciona como un mecanismo de relojería. En cuanto a la letra, es simple y directa, y muestra tanta melancolía como aceptación de la vida tal y como viene. La voz de Lua, del grupo español We Are Balboa, se convierte en la combinación perfecta de la de Garrett. Algo así pasa en Low Rising, de The Swell Season, otro momento álgido en la reciente historia de las canciones que tratan de las relaciones de pareja.

I'm sure he's not missed any bus or train, but as we know Garrett is currently living in Madrid, we feel even closer to him and wish him an extra dose of luck: "Break a leg!"

Estoy seguro de que este tipo no ha perdido ningún tren ni autobús, y como sabemos que Garrett vive desde hace tiempo en Madrid, lo sentimos un poquito más cercano y le deseamos todavía más suerte. O ... mucha mierda!

Hace una semana se concedieron los premios Oscar en Hollywood. Por lo que se refiere a los premios musicales, debo decir que no me han apasionado. Dejaremos el premio a la mejor banda sonora para otra entrada y nos centraremos en el de mejor canción. La carrera comercial de los temas ganadores de este premio es curiosamente desigual. Hace unas décadas, el Oscar en esta categoría significaba repercusión mundial, al estilo Eurovisión, pero hoy en día, salvo que seas Bruce Springsteen o Elton John, me temo que, o la peli es un bombazo, o el tema se defiende por sí solo o no te comes una rosca. No he visto la película Crazy Heart, lo cual no es óbice para comentar sobre el tema ganador The Weary Kind, interpretada por Ryan Bingham, pero mucho me temo que pasará sin pena ni gloria por radios y televisiones patrias. La canción no está mal, pero se me antoja algo plana y falta de sentimiento, opinión ésta perfectamente rebatible. Similarles circunstancias concurrían dos años atrás con la vencedora. Una película pequeña, Once, que aquí vieron 15 personas, y un tema intimista de dos "cuasi" desconocidos Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Ocurre que, para mí, Falling Slowly, tiene esa sutil profundidad de los sentimientos a flor de piel de la que la ganadora de este año carece.

A week ago the Oscars were awarded in Hollywood. I wasn't excited about the winners in the musical categories. I will talk about best score in another post, today's the day for best song winner. Years ago, getting this award meant instant success worldwide, but today, unless you're called Bruce Springsteen or Elton John, the film is a massive blast or the song is perfect in itself, I'm sure you won't get anywhere. I haven't seen Crazy Heart, but that does not mean I can't speak about Ryan Bingham's The Weary Kind. I'm afraid it won't be aired in many Spanish radio or TV stations. The song is OK, but I find it somewhat plain and lacking in feeling (which, of course, is an argueable view). Similar circumstances appeared to be two years ago when "half-known" Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová were awarded best song for Falling Slowly, from the tiny film Once. The thing is that I find the latter much deeper in showing emotions and more likely to give you goosebumps.

A Glen Hansard lo conocíamos, sin saberlo, de la película de Alan Parker The Commitments, donde hacía el papel del guitarrista de melena pelirroja de la banda de soul dublinesa. Durante el rodaje de Once, Glen conoce a Markéta, se convierten en pareja en la vida real y se rebautizan como The Swell Season, y aquí nace Low Rising.

We didn't know we did know Glen Hansard from Alan Parker's The Commitments, where he played the ginger-haired guitarist in the Dublin soul band. Glen met Markéta while shooting Once, became a couple in real life and then turned themselves into The Swell Season. Here's where Low Rising is born.

Musicalmente, el tema es un recetario de sonidos directos al corazón de clara inspiración en Van Morrison. Desde el comienzo  se nota un claro homenaje no encubierto al "león de Belfast" más emocionante (Into The Mystic), también en la sección de viento y cuerda que va cerrando el tema, pero sobre todo en el característico riff del bajo en el estribillo.  Incluso la cadencia en la voz de Glen nos recuerda a la de aquél. Aún así, Low Rising no es ni una copia ni un plagio. En el arte, en el que "casi" todo está inventado, el mérito está en saber adueñarse de lo que han hecho los maestros para crear algo propio y singular. 

Musically speaking, the song plays unconcealed tribute to Van Morrison's emotionally embeded work. From the opening chords a la Into The Mystic, to the horn and strings section to the end of it. Particulary evoking of the Lion of Belfast's music is the unique bass riff in the chorus. Glen's voice seems to emulate Van's most characteristic features. Nevertheless, the song is not plagiarizing at all. In art, where "nearly" everything is invented, the merit lies in the ability to take over what the top figures have done in order to create something personal and singular.

El mundo de la música nunca ha sido reacio a retratar los problemas de la pareja, y no podemos negar que las crisis de pareja son una de las circunstancias emocionales más desestabilizadoras que existen. En ambas canciones parece que nos estamos colando en la intimidad de una pareja, y causa cierto pudor siquiera escuchar las confesiones tan personales que nos hacen. Sin embargo, la escucha siempre nos deja buen sabor de boca, porque en ambas hablan de llevar el barco a buen puerto, de los deseos de resolver los problemas, poco a poco, de salvar el amor que hay entre ellos.  Por eso, temas como Low Rising son reconfortantes y ayudan a reposicionarse ante el problema. Nos está cayendo un chaparrón, pero bajo él seguimos estando los dos: tus ojos, los míos, tu boca, mi sonrisa y nuestras manos.

The world of music has been dealing with the crisis in the couple for ages, and we can't deny that these crises are amongst the most unsettling experiences in life. In both Falling Slowly and Low Rising, we feel as if we're sneaking into a couple's life without permission and even feel ashamed of listening to what they're saying, as it really is so intimate. However, the listening always leaves us with a good taste in our mouths, because both of them talk about "taking the sinking boat and pointing it home" and the wish of "coming up". There's always hope to rearrange things in their songs. That's why they're so relieving and so helpful when you want to straighten things up. It's like "the biggest storm ever is on our heads but we've still got each other: your eyes, my eyes, your mouth, my smile and our hands."
