Del FIB al FLOB, parte 3 (The Last Band - Become A Man)

CIII
"You always like to talk; you really think that I don't care"

BECOME A MAN
The Last Band
Songs From A Room
The Last Band
2009

Quiero destacar See You, Shut Up, The Cross y, especialmente Become A Man.

Following the review of the local groups that will play in this year's edition of FIB, today is the turn of The Last Band, a group from the small town of La Vall d'Uixó in Castellón who has called the attention of a public that is getting less and less easy to be convinced by new musical proposals. The classical line-up of guitarist, bass guitarist and drummer know how to blend the three instruments in such a way that none of them highlights but show a balance that helps them sound fresh and spontaneous, which is something quite hard to get.

The EP Songs From A Room is illustrative of this sound. I want to bring out See You, Shut Up, The Cross and Become A Man in particular. In the opening track you get instantly caught by the bass line while the soft guitar plucking gives way to the firm and intense drumming. Together with Mateu Aguilella's vocals, the peak of the track is held by the modern and addictive riff that goes along until the very end of it.

As well as other local groups, The Last Band have reached the semifinal of this year's edition of Radio3 Proyecto Demo, which has earned them instant recognition as one of the top names in the local indie scene. Their show at Villacamp stage in the 2011 FIB on July 11th will surely cause a significant increase in the number of followers, I am already one of them.

Del FIB al FLOB, parte 2 (Skizophonic - It Was My Fault)

"Someone said here's my fault: I have to know she never cares"

IT WAS MY FAULT
Skizophonic
Living Room
Skizophonic
2009

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Benicàssim no podía tardar en dar a luz un grupo eminentemente fibero.

It was a question of time that Benicàssim gave birth to a FIB-style band. Skizophonic has already issued three works and their good management has lead them to appear on a national TV show as they took part in last year's Radio3 Proyecto Demo. The band will be playing the songs of their new album Gossip at FIB's Villacamp stage on Monday 11 July.

I was impressed by the EP Living Room, particularly by the title track and this It Was My Fault. These two songs represent both sides of the band's direction and influences. The group itself name those influences and define their style as a mixture between the dance beats of Franz Ferdinand and the garage sound of Tokyo Sex Destruction. Ahead of Skizophonic lies a path where their decision to sing in English still has to prove successful. It is indeed a risky bet, but there's still enough time to play and get the necessary feedback to make a final decision. Some Spanish bands like The Sunday Drivers got recognition singing in very good English, others such as Love of Lesbian started in English and didn't take off until they switched to Spanish.  The decision to sing in English worked out fine in the first case whereas in the other it was the change that finally paved their way. Skizophonic are still in the search of the style that makes their music distinct and genuine enough to become big, but they do have the talent, passion and dedication required.

I'll start off by saying that I live just 6 miles away from the FIB site and I am not going to be there this year. My hyperacousis won't let me endure the overdose of decibels. It's not that I am hearing impaired, -way the opposite- I hear too well. That is I am so lucky that I am able to go to a concert and receive the full range of frequencies coming through the loudspeakers, so there is not a single sound from a guitar, bass, drum or keyboard that I could possibly miss. My hyperstimulated brain happens to consider this threshold of perception a virtual agression, an acoustic virus coming in from which a straight defense is needed in the form of different sorts of counterattacks such as vertigo, headaches and irritating tinnitus. You may call me an idiot as well as weak when I tell you that not only this year will I not make it to the festival but I have never ever been there either. Well, it is just that masses and heat altogether are not my cup of tea.

This year's International Festival (FIB) is becoming more LOcal (FLOB), since the organisers have called four bands from around the province to join the show for the first time. Let's start with Conecta4, a band from Castellón de la Plana, born from the remains of Fluor Kin, whose  lead singer and bassist David Hernández is also one of the heads behind the most remarkable media project in the area, the website nomepierdoniuna.net. The group are into a very powerful, electric pop path that is deeply rooted in the melodic local indie sound of the nineties, but they have successfully updated it to a fresher point. I had the chance to see them live at Petit Festival in Vall d'Uixó (Spain) last september and I got thrilled to death (so were my ears, literally). I am sure the band will take the breath away of hundreds next July 11th at the Villacamp stage as the tracks of their last work, Silencios, are getting played. I won't be there but I will enjoy it on my iPod, because -as the song title reads- it's no use getting sad about certain things.

Una de perogrullo (Rauelsson - Palideces)

LVII
"Si no siembras, ¿qué esperas? ...... Mala hierba"

PALIDECES
Rauelsson
Debutantes (EP)
Hush Records
2009

We often move around hostile environments where personal relationships turn out too tense, rough and utterly unbearable. On many occasions, this stale air puts us in such a stresssful state that it is always the wrong person that ends up getting  a bum rap. We don't notice the seriousness of the situation until it's reached a point of no return, so sooner or later, we start searching for someone to blame. The paradox lies in the fact that, most of the times, the guilty one is hardly ever aware of the mess he's done, furthermore, he may even get surprised at the knowledge of all the grudge he's been growing around. Think of your bosses, if you're lucky enough to be an employee in times like these. Of course, there are excellent bosses out there, but today we're dealing with those who are named bosses but will never become leaders. Those guys despise the problems of their employees with the same indifference as they drink their cup of coffee from their machine of individually encapsulated doses. They make three-dish menus with the panicking hurry of their secretaries as the latter try to meet their sudden and unexpected requirements and then they eat all three dishes in an expensive restaurant where, of course, the current flatterer will pay for.  Finally, before leaving palace, the bags under the eyes of the whole staff will end up in the same glass of the ice that will receive a shower of a pure malt scotch taken from their "humble" office minibar.  Although getting into their minds -rotten by distrust, fear and their own lack of self-confidence- is a hard job, we have our own speech ready for the time when they disappear from our lives -in the hope of us being the first to leave. And we wish them bad luck, not as a revenge, but in the belief of divine justice. Because, when they are not bosses any longer, who will they eat up then? This song is dedicated to this kind.

The chorus in this beautiful song reads: 'If you don't sow, what do you expect but weeds?' If you're skeptical enough you will assume that there are many people out there who have done nothing but sow good seeds and life has given them nothing but pain in return, while others, whose path is full of dead bodies, are presently enjoying a rich life. Maybe this is the only thing they have left, a rich mansion surrounded by the most stinking and damaging weeds.

Too much poetry for such a cruel thing, you may wonder. I say, if none of our farewell words will cause an effect on them because after our leaving their minds will start planning on their next victim, why not killing them softly with this calm tune by Rauelsson? Raúl Pastor, the band's frontman, left his own environment -not sure if he considered it stale- to create a calmer atmosphere where contemplation is central. From Oregon, where he went to follow his studies and met the inspiration for his music, to Castellón, where he elaborated the lyrics of his album La siembra, la espera y la cosecha (Sowing time, wait and harvest time) (2010), Rauelsson presents a solid work, full of personality, that has its roots in the current folk trend of the US western coast (Laura Gibson, Bart Davenport, Loch Lomond) and eventually lands on the Spanish eastern coast like a silent hurricane in slow motion that oxygenates the blurry air that constrains a provincial town that has spent too long contemplating its navel. The EP Debutantes is an advance of this album. Stating that his music is relaxing and comforting might sound too obvious, but it is just true. His lyrics make us stroll around open spaces that are free from oppression, his guitar chords make us fly above the roofs under which all the mediocrity of our world lies, an ordinariness of which we think it's impossible to get out.  He shows us the way to. We can't believe that Rauelsson finds the exact balance between Portland, Oregon and Benicàssim, Spain, two absolutely different realities. Just when we thought life started far off the mountains surrounding our hometown, Rauelsson mixes smells and colours from both continents and helps us find the beauty in our own environment, in the Desierto de las Palmas (listen), in the sea, in our workplace, in our bedroom.

By the way, Santi, the description of the boss does not apply to you.
