(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) You might find the vocalist's falsetto squealing, you might not like to jump from one style to the other three times in the same song, you might not understand what the lyrics are all about, but you must admit this is no ordinary stuff.
For the first time in the blog I am going to post a review on a band that I have already talked about. Nevertheless, there is not much more that I can say different from my previous comment, except they have just published their first and long-awaited album following the singles Schoolin' and the re-issue of MY KZ, UR BF, but I'll try to sound more convincing this time: if these guys don't make it to a full-up football stadium within a year, my faith in the future of music will drastically fall.
You can find everything (everything) you can think of in Man Alive: R'n'B, ballad, electronic, sounds of the eighties, prog rock, some metal and lots of fun and experimental music in such a way that you really feel you are listening to something new, though every single tune has lots of influences that can be tracked down. But, who cares! We just love the stuff!
Though my favourite tracks are NASA Is On Your Side and Leave The Engine Room, I've chosen Schoolin' to feature in this week's post to be able to show how the band are real artists and composers and not pure hype. When I first listened to it I felt it contained much of the DNA one could extract from their previous EPs and singles, and I quite liked it, but it wasn't till I came across this acoustic version that I eventually fell in love with it:
Suddenly, the coldness and mathematical accuracy of the studio version gave way to the warm, emotional touch of the unplugged performance for The Mahogany Sessions (see The Mahogany Blog). Same song, different feelings, but both superb. If the band can manage so impressively performing such a difficult song to be played live, that means something, doesn't it?
Of course, Man Alive is not the kind of thing that one loves at first listening. You've got to give it second chances, why not? To tell the truth, most people like me are fed up with easy listenings, I need challenging stuff to provoke physical and chemical reactions inside my body to get me going. So welcome to the re-invention of pop music!

Puede que alguien encuentre el falseto del vocalista chirriante, puede que no guste ir saltando de estilo en estilo dos o tres veces en la misma canción, puede que no entienda una sola palabra de lo que cantan, pero hay que admitir que esto es de todo menos convencional.
Por primera vez en el blog, voy a hcer una entrada de una banda de la que ya he hablado. Sin embargo, no hay mucho que pueda decir que no haya dicho ya, excepto que acaban de publicar su largamente esperado nuevo disco, después de habernos entregado ya dos singles: Schoolin' y la reedición de MY KZ, UR BF, pero esta vez intentaré sonar algo más convincente: si estos tíos no llenan un estadio de fútbol en un año mi confianza en el futuro de la música caerá en picado.
Se puede encontrar de todo en Man Alive: rhythm and blues, baladas, música electrónica, sonidos de los ochenta, rock sinfónico, algo de metal y, sobre todo, toneladas de diversión y experimentación, de tal manera que escuchar el álbum es como escuchar algo totalmente nuevo, aunque cada tema tenga mil influencias claramente localizables. Pero, ¡qué más dará! ¡El disco nos encanta tal y como es!
Aunque mis temas favoritos son NASA Is On Your Side y Leave The Engine Room, escogí Schoolin' para esta entrada para poder mostrar el nivel como artistas y compositores de esta gente. La primera vez que lo escuché sentí que el ADN de la banda que se podía extraer de sus singles y EPs anteriores estaba presente en éste. Y me gustaba mucho, pero no fue hasta que escuché esta versión acústica cuando de verdad me enamoré de la canción.
De repente, la frialdad y la precisión matemática de la versión de estudio dio paso a un toque cálido y lleno de emoción en esta actuación "desenchufada" para las Mahogany Sessions (ver The Mahogany Blog). Misma canción, diferentes sensaciones, pero igual de soberbias. Si la banda es capaz de actuar con esa solvencia con una canción tan, aparentemente, dificil de tocar en directo, eso querrá decir algo, ¿no?
Desde luego, Man Alive no es el tipo de disco que uno ama a la primera escucha, se trata de darle segundas y terceras oportunidades... ¿por qué no? A decir verdad, somos muchos los que estamos hartos de la música de fácil escucha y necesitamos que nos propongan desafíos que nos provoquen una reacción física y química en el cuerpo para seguir tirando. Así que, ¡bienvenidos a la reinvención de la música pop!
