"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Y Patrizia cogió su guitarra...

Europa... USA....

And Patrizia took her guitar...

Twenty years ago a teenage girl whose voice and pose made her look a little 'too forward' gathered the best musicians in town to form the band Los Romeos and so hit the national charts singing things like 'bite me on my bum, 'cos there's where I prefer' or 'I do nothing but think of caressing your sweet body the whole day until I get to the place you and I know' and other sorts of exciting harangues. Music and words addressed to ignite the chemistry in the bodies of thousand of teenagers eager to experience new carnal feelings. Well Patrizia is still Patrizia. She's obviously changed, but it looks like she's not the 'reinvention' type. I have the feeling that concepts like 'maturity' or 'experienced' are not in her dictionary for self-definition. In her new project -Lula-, Patrizia still sings about the same basic emotions and she does not get too far from the incoherence which characterizes the young spirit. I guess that's because she wants to show this way. And that's fair enough.

Together with Adela Arrufat (drums) and Félix Ribes (bass), Patrizia Escoín leads the guitar band which moves confortably among the fields of rock, punk and power-pop. But there's nothing surprising in that. What is remarkable is the freedom and ease in their music which one expects to find only in debutants. This is no meticulously-thought pop intended for the masses to like it, nor vague and soulless rock. We get hooked to the third album by the trio from Castellón because we see ourselves reflected on it, because its notes are in our genes, because it does not lie to us.... because we suffer -from resentment, love and incommunication- the same as they.

Lula will be playing at 2011 FIB Villacamp stage on July 12th. I hope the festival will earn them, as well as the rest of local bands, further recognition across the borders of our province, nation, continent.....

The truth is that I don't know where to start. Shall I start at the beginning? I'm not sure where the story starts. I used to think Los Auténticos was the start of it all, but now I know it is not true. Try with the end, then. There is no end to this. So let's just start right in the middle of it.

Yesterday, I was at the premiere of Juan Carlos Tomás's project The Story of Pop Music in Castellón. Juanki, as he is known locally, is a former member of Los Rítmicos and Los Romeos and is currently running the record label Lemon Songs. He has carried out this ambitious research with great effort to compile and spread his knowledge of the last fifty years of pop music in the province of Castellón. The outcome is the proof that, musically speaking, our land has done a lot to become more open-minded, modern and creative through the years. From the book that goes with the 4-CD collection, written by David Hernández Beltrán, one has no doubt that all the musicians involved in this story have done a huge effort to break the barriers in order to exploit the virtues of a land, Castellón, which has historically been inclined to delight in its own miseries instead. But the ones present in yesterday's event were not feeling nostalgic about a time which will never come back, we felt just like re-reading a few chapters of a book which still has lots of pages to be written. Like in Bertrand Tavernier's wonderful film, today's the beginning of it all.

Undoubtedly, the chapter that we all consider the brightest refers to the milestone band Los Auténticos. It did not appear out of the blue, but the happy coincidence of a series of events gave birth to our local Beatles. As I could check out on a recent visit to Liverpool, the city holds the memory of the fab four as a sign of identity not only of the city, but also of a whole time. But we forget about all the bands and musicians who, before them, paved the way for the quartet to land at the right moment in the right place to start the conquest of the world. On a much smaller scale, our equivalent to the Lennon-McCartney label, the duo Villanueva-Morcillo rescued Castellón from its peripheral idiosincracy and showed the way to hundreds of musicians willing to express their creativity in a freer direction. Back then, one could only count on his own passion, will, and ambition, for the means were nil. Those values have probably been their best legacy.

Juan Antonio Morcillo used to play in the 70s in bands such as SherpasLos AstomsC-H-5Motor Tedio, meeting Miguel Ángel Villanueva in the last two. They both, together with Miguel Ángel's brother Pedro Villanueva, and Jesús Gimeno form the band who, showed thousand of youngsters that change had arrived and it was staying for good. It was the beginning of the 80s and the life of the group was too brief. Nevertheless, the freshness of their songs, their talent in songwriting and their confident presence in live shows still remain in our minds. Their expectations to become a big success nationwide were not met, despite their shows in Madrid and TV appearances, and the band split in 1984. They left a good fistful of brilliant, rabidly adictive, full-proof pop songs for us to enjoy.

Los Auténticos were not physically present as a group in yesterday's show, but this 1981 song is present in the collective unconscious of a town, a province, which adopted it as an anthem of a whole generation and a time that has become an endless influence for anyone taking a look inside the history of the people of a small region who, from time to time, clearly state that do not want to be small.

P.S.: Am I the only one who thinks that the song is still waiting for a well-deserved cover?
