(ENGLISH AHEAD) Cuentan los Early Winters en su Myspace que la fase de composición de temas para este EP se realizó en cinco lugares del globo tan remotos como el Reino Unido, Los Ángeles, Tokio, Nueva Zelanda y Canadá. Podréis pensar que estaban recorriendo el mundo y escribían sus canciones en una camioneta de camino a su siguiente actuación. Pues bien, los cuatro miembros de la banda estaban trabajando, pero cada uno en un lugar, de manera que se hacía imposible sacar adelante el proyecto sin la ayuda del Skype y el correo electrónico. Y así fue como salieron las cinco canciones del disco. Carina Round, Justin Rutledge, Dan Burns y Zac Rae se pusieron manos a la obra y fabricaron cinco piezas de perfecto pop-rock algo ochentero, cierto aire country pero convenientemente reciclado para sonar lo suficientemente atemporal como para que te guste desde el minuto uno.

De semejantes sesiones por videoconferencia salió la joya de la corona: Tough Love. Entra en la categoría de canciones redondas por su perfecta estructura, su brillante estribillo, su intro y su coda. Por momentos me parece estar escuchando a unos Fleetwood Mac en su era Mirage con la formidable voz de su Christine McVie particular, la británica Carina Round, quien me recuerda en ciertos momentos de la canción a la fuerza de la inigualable Chrissie Hynde y en otros a una cantante tan intimista como Alondra Bentley.

 

El mundo de la música está asistiendo al nacimiento de unas voces femeninas de incomparable calidad -Rumer, Anna Calvi, Joan Wasser...- todavía bastante desconocidas por el gran público atragantado con Beyoncés, Gagas y Shakiras, y la voz de Carina Round puede perfectamente añadirse a la lista de descubrimientos, especialmente tras verla y escucharla en el siguiente vídeo:

Definitivamente, hay que reformular el axioma: la distancia más corta entre dos puntos ya no es la línea recta, sino la línea ADSL.

The Early Winters say in their Myspace that the writing of this EP took place in five different locations: the UK, Los Angeles, Tokyo, New Zealand and Canada. You might think they were touring around and these song were written in an old van while on their way to the next show. The truth is that every member did work on it, but each one from a different place, where they happened to be at work. This separation made it impossible to meet face to face so the songs had to be dealt with via Skype and e-mail. Carina Round, Justin Rutledge, Dan Burns and Zac Rae got down to work and the result was this stunning 5-piece EP of perfect pop-rock sound, with a slight look back on the 80s though conveniently recycled to make it sound present enough to let you love it from the word go.

From such long-distance video sessions a true gem came up: Tough Love. Its brilliant intro, chorus and coda, make the perfect structure to list it under the perfect-song category. At times, I seem to be listening to Fleetwood Mac's Mirage only with the voice of Carina Round instead of Christine McVie's. The strenghth of her voice in some parts of the song reminds me of Chrissie Hynde's, while in others it's got the intimate colour of Alondra Bentley's. Such is the blend and the genuinity of Carina's beautiful instrument.

The world is attending the birth of some illustrious female voices of incomparable quality -Rumer, Anna Calvi, Joan Wasser...- still unknown to the masses, already full up with Beyoncés, Gagas and Shakiras, and Carina Round's may easily be on this list of newly discovered talents. You'll get convinced once you've seen and listened to the following video.

Definitely, the axiom must be changed: the shortest distance between two points is not the straight line any longer, but the ADSL line.

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Para los creyentes versados en la ortodoxia bíblica, mentar a Jezabel es como mentar al mismísimo diablo. Para empezar, es una mujer -que en el sentido bíblico ya es malo de por sí, especialmente en el Antiguo Testamento. La hija del rey de Sidón, esposa de Acab, rey de Samaria, es definida como manipuladora, aduladora, hechicera y demás lindezas. Esta mujer solita, según rezan las escrituras, se dedicó a camelarse a su marido para poner todas las trabas posibles al culto a Jehová, haciendo desaparecer uno a uno a cuantos profetas aparecían por allí para decirle que de qué iba, mientras su pueblo disfrutaba de jornadas interminables de orgía y desenfreno adorando a Baal, un dios que a Jehová no le molaba. Arrogante y sensual, conseguía todo aquello que se proponía con sus encantos. Por supuesto, la Biblia le depara un final bien ejemplarizante y la pobre Jezabel acaba tirada por la ventana por sus propios eunucos y su cuerpo devorado por perros callejeros.

Me da a mí que la Jezzy era una tía con un par de ovarios a la que no le dio la gana plegarse a adorar a un dios que no era el suyo, y menos por imposición. ¿Que además hacía gala de una sexualidad poco recatada? Pues mira, como que me cae todavía mejor. Por todo ello los seguidores de Jehová no descansaron hasta cargársela. Y es que los fanáticos no soportan que alguien no piense como ellos. En esto parece que no han pasado unos cuantos siglos. A pesar de todo, por muchos más que pasen me parece a mí que siempre habrá una Jezabel para seguir tocando los cojones.

Anna Calvi, una de las sensaciones de la temporada, versiona en un tono épico, a medio camino entre un spaghetti western y un drama sinfónico, la Jezabel de Wayne Shaklin que ya interpretaron Frankie Laine y Edith Piaf, donde destacan las “cualidades” de la Jezzy. Vamos, el diablo con patas. En palabras de Calvi, “la belleza nace de la fealdad y la noche” y su inspiración es una mezcla de “esperanza y oscuridad”. Así mismo, habla de la influencia que la música de orquesta tiene en su música, que sumado a su voz de registros graves añade todavía más dramatismo a la pieza. En una lectura muy personal, esta Jezabel es una mujer demoledora, implacable, la primera femme fatale de la historia. La mujer orgullosa de ser mujer. Eva no le llega a la suela de los zapatos.

To the believers who have made an orthodox reading and study of the Bible, naming Jezebel is just as bad as naming the devil. To start with, she is a woman, which on biblical terms -especially in the Old Testament- means of a lesser condition. The daughter of the King of Sidon, married to Acab, King of Samaria, is defined as manipulative, fawning, witch and the like. According to the Scriptures, this woman on her own managed to sweet talk her husband into hindering the worship to Jehova and getting rid of all prophets that kept turning up to try and make them change their minds while their people enjoyed a wild life of debauchery worshipping Baal, a local god Jehova did not fancy at all. Arrogant and sensual as she was, she got whatever she wished with her charm. Of course, the Bible provides her with a well deserved punishment and so she was betrayed by her eunuchs and thrown out of the window, her body left abandoned to be eaten up by stray dogs.

I really think poor old Jezzy just had the guts not to submit to worshipping a god that was not hers, especially through imposition. She made a great show of her sexuality? Fair enough. I do fancy her a lot more. It was because of all this that Jehova’s fans did not stop until they got her. I reckon there are fanatics who just can’t put up with other people's different thoughts. It seems like the story is not a few centuries old. Anyway, I really think there will always be a Jezebel around just to keep on pissing them off.

Anna Calvi is one of last year’s sensations. She covers Wayne Shanklin’s Jezebel -earlier performed by stars like Frankie Laine or Edith Piaf- in an epic move, midway between a spaghetti western and a symphonic drama where all Jezebel's ‘virtues’ are highlighted: a devil on four legs, to put it shortly. In Calvi’s words, ‘beauty comes from ugliness and night’ and her inspiration is a mixture of ‘hope and darkness’. This, plus the influence that orchestral music has on her work and her deep, low pitched voice just adds the necessary dramatism to the song. In a very personal interpretation, this Jezebel is a devastating, implacable woman, the first femme fatale in history. A woman proud of being a woman. Eve just does not hold a candle to her.
