"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."
Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

Yelle

Source et caetera
2007

Only a few weeks ago I was moaning about the lack of interesting music coming from France. Today I must change my mind. Soon after that I came across M83 and Sébastien Tellier and my whole perception of French music changed. It looks like the indie scene in our neighbour country is getting specialized in electronic music, Daft Punk and Air being its top names, who have also become a reference. DJs play their tracks at discos all over the world and new talents are starting to come out of view, and even starting to make their way into the charts (Tonight, Yuksek)

Getting down to brass tacks, today we are reviewing Yelle, who is willing to make us dance each and every single track in her album just for the fun of it. Their music sails in the sea of pop for its sounds and for the image attached to it (is there anyone today who can set apart the concepts of pop and image?), and what she is selling is a somewhat kitsch product, full of Almodovarian colour and stimulating naivety where (young?) women take central position. As I know very little French, I can't quite catch the meaning of the song, but from the title is seems that the boys are the ones to blame. I don't know whether the whole thing is about the tiring "girl power" stuff or there is something more to it (comments are welcomed) but I don't really care about that. This is how it goes:

To top it off, here's a remix that is way better than the original, musically and aesthetically. Watching those dancers do their stuff make my whole body move...

Far beyond all the labels that we so frantically attach to every single moving thing on earth there is its essence. And it is the essence that makes all of us equal. To find out about it, we have to search the inside of things. Monsieur Tellier's musical adventure takes us to the magic of repetitive sounds seeming to have turned into new ones at every passing minute. The envelope is a wonderful mixture of a thousand things we have already heard before, labelled ambient, chillout, dance, techno, pop and even minimalism (am I the only mortal who finds connections between this track and some of Michael Nyman's?). Nevertheless, we want to know more about all this artificial firework. If we take off all the layers of this musical avant-garde piece, there lies a simple, naked, straight-forward declaration of love: "I want to spend my life with you" (such a statement can be traced in any American romantic comedy script, most of which I would find uninspiring). So this showy, bombastic wrapping paper conceals a tiny little thing that we sometimes take no notice of: the fact that we all live for love and search for the love that makes us feel "that beat in our veins". So there it is, the essence: a love song. Or should I say, THE love song. The one that has been written thousands of times by so many artists and we have heard in so many different tunes. We can critisize Monsieur Tellier for not being too original, for sticking to such affected lyrics. But let us wonder what is under all our masks and disguises, with which we present ourselves to the world as genuine and unique human beings... Isn't there inside us a conventional and unrebellious spirit? Aren't we, in essence, affected, prudish and bourgeois beings after all? Left-wingers of the world, start your lynching on me!
