"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

A handful of memories (Horse Shoes - The Perfect Combination)

CLVIII
"There's something familiar in the air
I can't put my finger on
Some place I've been when I was young
A few scents and some sounds"

THE PERFECT COMBINATION
Horse Shoes
The Imperial School (7-inch)
Shelflife Records
2009

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) There seems to be a time when time is an issue. Of course, I am not talking about childhood, or even adolescence. At some point of your adulthood your memories of long ago are nothing but flashes, small portions of past reality that occupy a tiny space in your brains. The remembrance of certain sounds, smells, colours, drive you into a state where nostalgia and melancholia go hand in hand. Then you are aware of the passing of time. You are an adult, but you can't help thinking about the fact that everything feels too far away. Thus, you start considering that you're just halfway the journey.

Not long ago I was listening to The Perfect Combination as I was strolling down the street past my old school when I was struck by strong flashes from my childhood. I had walked past it hundreds of times as it is not far from home, but the combination of the music with the panning of my head along the building triggered out a handful of memories I had never before recalled all together. The smell of the wet ivy in the yard, the shape of the fences surrounding the block, the greyish paint of the façade... I stopped in front of the main entrance, trying to catch a glimpse of something that reminded me of the big old dark hall I used to cross every day. My school hasn't been a school for ages, that I knew. But there I was, standing still with my eyes fixed on a door and my mind flying some decades back. For a moment I thought I could ask my way in to complete the experience and revive all those memories more intensely. Then the song finished and I took my earphones off. I paused, thought it over and decided I might as well just turn around and head for home. The Perfect Combination exists, but it lasts just a few minutes, say two and a half.

Be Somebody Else! (Eytan And The Embassy - Everything Changes)

CLVII
"How did you end up in this place for so long?
And what ever made you think that this is where you belong?"

eytan and the embassy, 2013, new year, everything changes
EVERYTHING CHANGES
Eytan and The Embassy
Eytan and The Embassy
Autoproducido/Self-published
2012

'How do you stand up straight in a world that puts you down? How do you know what's of this earth and what's divine? Well if you're tired of being yourself, go on and be somebody else'. These are some of the verses with which Eytan and The Embassy build this lighthearted song about the changes in life. This new year, full of resolutions that are almost never fulfilled, Eytan calls for transvestism (a piece of advice clearly visible in the video) to combat frustrations. When all self-help manuals, shrinks and educators strive to convey the importance of being yourself, these crazy New Yorkers tell us that it is time to be like those we admire, to put our masks and wigs on and enjoy life without paying much attention to ourselves. A curious and transgressive view to insist into on the universal themes of 'carpe diem' and 'sic transit gloria mundi' .

The track is so addictive, young and playful that anyone not cheering up must be certainly dead. It start with a keyboard-style like the one in La revolución sexual by Spanish band La Casa Azul and then gets into the territories that Toploader exploited in the hit Dancing In The Moonlight. A little of Motown touch here and a little bit of indie-pop there and the show can begin. A mainstream song that works as much as the old Cheiw bubblegum who had a neverending strawberry flavour. A much sweeter alternative than Josephine's A Freak A, which was already reviewed on What You're Missing, where the singer also encourages us to put on our masks. So, enjoy the year and just be whatever you wish to be.

Happy new year (IMF willing)

Sorpresas te da la vida... (Prefab Sprout - Life Of Surprises)

I started this blog out of curiosity. I wanted to know whether the experience of writing regularly about the music I liked was worth it, and if anybody in the cyberspace would be interested in me (musically speaking). Soon I realized how comforting it became to write about myself rather than of the bands I chose for the weekly post. Is it vanity, daring or exhibitionism? Probably there's a little bit of all that, but just in small doses. It's just that I started finding it natural to talk about what was going on inside me at the very moment I sat before the laptop screen. Thus, the blog started changing from a song blog to a... surprise, surprise! a personal diary.

I don't mean I am going to stop writing about music (I certainly won't), but I won't limit myself to indie music (in fact I had already skipped that self-imposed rule). Moreover, having seen the therapeutic effect of talking about what I love and detest, I want to remain with the impression that I'm writing about what I really like. I want to feel as free as a person that has started his own blog can feel. I don't want to stick to absurd impositions.

The reason for all these thoughts is the recent event in my life that have to be with the feeling of loss; the dissappearance of people from your life. People that one day turned up timidly or just pushing on and all of a sudden, after a certain period of time, simply fade away. These people promise you a neverending friendship and flatter you with false affection and loving words and open the door to their homes for you to come at any time until one day...surprise, surprise! you realise how little you really meant to them.  Not to mention all the celebrities that you once happened to meet in person and... surprise, surprise! reveal such lack of class that slaps you off the idealized dream in a most undeserved way. Conclusion: we never learn enough. In these cases, let's welcome the loss.

It's a life of surprises (quote). Prefab Sprout's song, one of my favourites of Paddy McAloon's band, warns us of how 'it's no help growing older or wiser', if you never know what lies ahead, no matter how much you plan about your life. People come in and out of it, sometimes little by little and sometimes en masse. Some are fascinating and others are repulsive, but in the end, only a few of them remain. These ones never fade away, even if they wanted to, even if you never touch or see them again, because they live in your heart forever. So, I think we'd better not waste our time with holograms that vanish in the air the moment you want to touch them and offer nothing but an illusion of friendship, because they are as fake as Monopoly currency. I prefer the ones who only give you surprises on your birthday.

But don't you think I'm being too nasty, I am saying all this with all my love and positive energy. I believe Paddy when he sings: 'bitter makes the worst things come back'

So let's talk about the band. As well as The Divine Comedy and Neil Hannon, Prefab Sprout is Paddy McAloon and viceversa. The latter is one of the most brilliant songwriters that pop music has given us since the eighties. He has always been able to walk along the thin line that divides mellodic pop and affected sentimental songs. Since the risky Swoon, the masterpiece Steve McQueen, where no verse or chord can be left out, the commercial From Langley Park To Memphis or the introspective Jordan:The Comeback until the ignored Let's Change The World With Music, Paddy has been successful any time he's tried to. If you already know about the band, it's time to revisit. If not, how lucky you are, because you don't know what you were missing.
