"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."
Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

Vosotros lo sabíais (La Doble Fila - Cinco Días)

CLXI
"Tú que trabajas para Goldman Sachs
me dices que quieres arreglar esto"

la doble fila, viernes de rencor, crisis, desobediencia civil, hip hop, sistema bancario, sistema financiero
CINCO DÍAS
La Doble Fila
Viernes de rencor

2013

Vamos a llamarla Susi.

I remember the smile of the person sitting in front of me as I was negotiating a fixed-term deposit with my bank as usual. Let's call her Susie. At once I felt she was pulling a somewhat fake face. I could not beleive I was being offered a 100-percent-toxic product instead of the common deposit, aware as she was of my habits, my capital inflow, my usual expenses and my future projects regarding my savings. Susi knew. She knew she was cheating on me. Susie is guilty. In English, some swindlers are called confidence tricksters, and Susie is a con artist, so is her boss, and her superior, and the president of her bank and the Bank of Spain's. I am looking foward to their paying for their crimes in the shortest time possible.

The real world, the one that politicians and bankers do not ever tread, is starting to show signs of fatigue and rebellion. There have always been groups whose lyrics denounced unscrupulous capitalism, the deficit in human rights and other generalities, but never before had songs dealt so accurately with the anger that our closest reality raises on us due to the most glaring cases of corruption, the plunder to civil society, the disaffection towards monarchy, etc. Only a few examples such as Chocadelia Internacional, Les Vivo, Tako or Artos Tos should be enough for any intelligent average listener to get convinced that something is going on out there, and it does not look like going down. Nevertheless, intelligence is no longer supposed to dwell in most of our leaders' minds. By the way, in the meantime the sheeplike population still thinks that national music is represented by each year's Eurovision crap entry.

The sensational Barcelona-based band, La Doble Fila, has come to shout out loud. With its ingenious mix style of hip hop and rock, it has issued an album that I will never stop praising (read the review of Viernes de Rencor here). In the opening track it's the banks and the ones rescuing them with our money that are the target of our national rage. Call it a wake-up call, not a protest. There is no time for complaints. We must take action, disobey, because this is not the result of an accident, 'you did know.'

The track is necessarily inflammatory and the result of despair, though wisely channeled. In these times, it is mandatory to have artistic references who look at the face of society and speak through the mouths of those who cannot. In the present case -it couldn't be otherwise-, Pablo Espadas' megaphone-like voice calls and incites action: there is no turning back, -'te quedan cinco días' translates 'your end is near'. There is no time for putting a band-aid on a gushing wound, let all masks be unveiled. Are those who sank the boat really the ones who are supposed to refloat it? Sorry Susie, but no, "I know you're lying."

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) Hard times are not over yet. Nobody knows where the crisis will take us, but I'm pretty sure that the path leading to the finish line (if there is any) is not an easy one. Watching or reading the news every day is becoming a painful activity, since you can't hide a feeling of frustration at the stupidity and incompetence of the people who rule our countries. Each statement of a politician speaking about the steps that need to be taken to "overcome difficulties" is a deadly shot against intelligence, causing nothing else but anger.

However, being myself a pacifist, I defend such anger. An anger that produces the energy needed to stand up against injustice, to say no loud and clear, to face the enemies of equality and never feel comfortable with what the powerful tell you to think and do. Shame on those who suffer the violation of their rights and choose resignation and inaction.

Whatever the message under this song, I can quite feel the anger running through its veins. The Spanish band The Shooters portray a rough landscape of dust, sand and wind where the chorus stands out powerfully carrying the ultimate defying cry against all storms. A cry for survival, in a stoner way (my review of their latest album at rockinspain.es, in Spanish). This band well deserves being followed for its spirit and determination and also for having the ability to infect us with fruitful and inspiring outrage.
