"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

STICK AROUND
David Ramirez
Apologies
Sweetworld
2012

Much as he sounds like hundreds of other musicians and the songs seem so indisputably American folk, I get never tired of listening to this singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas, who really deserves to be taken seriously. Ryan Adams and Bob Dylan are his two greatest inspirations, although he is equally inclined to listen to bands like The National or Arcade Fire. With a distinctive voice that sometimes sounds like Dylan's blending with Adams's in a melancholic and witty way, and other times showing a stronger Johnny Cash approach, Ramirez succeeds in providing us with the sad stories of those modern midwestern cowboys that have changed their horses for old vans and the girls under their arms for an acoustic guitar with which they sing their misfortunes in dark saloons full of tormented souls and smoke.

Stick Around -song and video- is a good example of that mixture of misery and hope that David Ramirez's music evokes. A song that walks on a tight rope balancing between the craving for life and the doubts about the future. And, of course, the looming shadow of the past, to top it off. However, there is much more optimism in the song than meets the eye. After all, we all have hesitated more than once whether sticking around in one place was the best option, as something told us we might as well be leaving right away. Just brooding about it is a clear sign that we are still alive.

Relativizando (The Tallest Man On Earth - Troubles Will Be Gone)

CXLII
"Well the day is never done,
But there's a light on where you're sleeping
So I hope somewhere that troubles will be gone"

TROUBLES WILL BE GONE
The Tallest Man On Earth
The Wild Hunt
Dead Oceans - Pop Stock
2010

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Mi última entrada decía Puede que ocurran cosas.

No importa cuál.

O eso cree el sueco Kristian Matsson, alias The Tallest Man On Earth.

Troubles Will be Gone by The Tallest Man on Earth on Grooveshark

My last post was about things about to happen. Indeed, they have. Some things were expected, too expected. When the intricacies of a rotten system become exposed, you can't be surprised by anything this machinery accomplishes. Moreover, it is very easy to predict what will the next move be.

Inbetween posts, a longer time than I expected, I've spent my time travelling in the deepest sense of the word. I've done so in order to meet people from another country, no matter which one. Moving away from your comfort, your usual context, is a great way to detox from verbal pollution and to put things into perspective. When you're with people who are paid 300 euros a month, who live in a shared flat worth 400 a month in a country where a carton of milk is more expensive than at your local supermarket and still see life with optimism and do not stop making plans you realize that no matter how bad things are going, your misfortune is always relative.

Therefore it is necessary to be optimistic and determined. If you do not like what's going on and there seems to be no way you can change it, there is a place where you will be surrounded by other people, where other possibilities will arise, where you will be able to fulfill yourself instead of being constantly half-pissed-off. Somewhere the troubles will be gone. Or so it seems to the Swede Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man On Earth.

Dylan's influence is most evident, but it sounds very personal though because Kristian merely captures the essence of his master to write a story full of light and good vibes. The Tallest Man On Earth creates landscapes where vigour and tenderness coexist in perfect harmony. Another pleasant surprise that comes from Scandinavia, one more to add to my list of favourites coming from up north: Joel Alme, Montt Mardié and the consecrated Kings Of Convenience.

Mecanismos de relojería (Garrett Wall Band - Is There No Freedom)

XXXV
"We can't talk of inbetweens when we're both extremes"

IS THERE NO FREEDOM?
Garrett Wall Band
Hands and Imperfections
Mondegreen Records
2009

I learnt about Garrett Wall in the most unsual way. Prudent as I am, I hardly ever take a step without thorough planning, and this applies also to the unpericulous action of buying a CD. Nevertheless, on this particular day, I entered a second-hand shop to search for CD bargains and came across one whose cover reminded me of that of Bob Dylan's Street Legal. "Will it sound similar?", I wondered. I took a further look at the booklet inside and saw the lyrics and a photograph of the guy walking through a crowded street in the famous El Rastro flee market in Madrid and another one of the musicians in a sort of typical tapas bar. I took the risk of wasting 2.5 euros and bought it.

Me pregunté si sonaría parecido.

It looks like Bob is waiting for a bus to stop, while Garrett just follows with his look the one that has just passed by. Bob is somewhat impatient whereas Garrett shows quite a relaxed pose, at least not worried of not having taken it. I quite like the attitude of doing your job honestly without desperatly waiting for your train to catch and taking a smaller carriage that suits you later on, probably one that you've built yourself. Don't forget trains and buses are usually packed up with people trying to get to the same destination as you in a rush hour...

Seeing where Garrett Wall has ended up, I think he's chosen the right way. In this new chapter, he joins a group of talented musicians to form a band that takes a step beyond to what he showed in his earlier work, broading the spectrum of his potencial audience, with a slight folk-oriented sound, highlighting the acoustic elements of his music, and the exploration of the possibilities of blending string and wind instruments together to create joyous sound. His beautiful and personal voice draws the continuing line from the essence of a great musician to the present reality of a true artist.

After the necessary introduction, let us listen to today's song, because there's little more to say. Rarely do two minutes fifty seconds of music leave such good taste in our mouths as Is There No Freedom does. Musically, it has clockwork precision. Lyrically, it is simple and direct, and shows both melancholy and life's acceptance as it is. The vocals of Lua, from the Spanish band We are Balboa, becomes the perfect combination to Garrett's. Just as it happens in The Swell Season's Low Rising, another milestone of songs about relationships in the couple.

I'm sure he's not missed any bus or train, but as we know Garrett is currently living in Madrid, we feel even closer to him and wish him an extra dose of luck: "Break a leg!"

O ... mucha mierda!

Profiles and Networks (Richard Hawley - The Ocean)

XXXIV
"And so you look at me and need the space that means as much to me"

THE OCEAN
Richard Hawley
Coles Corner
Mute
2005

In his recent book, Dublinesca, the Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas tells the story of a publisher who, feeling somewhat frustrated with his job after years of success, decides to travel to Dublin in search of the incarnation of the spirits that dwell in James Joyce's Ulysses. Interesting though it may seem, I'm not going to deal with the story, but with the words with which it's written.

The novel is full of cultural references: museums, books, films, writers and, of course, music. One might see a pretencious move in the author's decision to pack the reading up with criss-crossed references of both popular and minor interest among the readers. Musically speaking, Vila-Matas takes no risks quoting top names like The Beatles (This Boy), Tom Waits (Downtown Train) or Bob Dylan and his Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine), but certainly surprises everyone by mentioning Javier de Galloy's almost unknown cover of Lou Reed's Walk On The Wild Side. The list of other references is endless, which makes me think that Vila-Matas deliberately wished to write a Net-like novel and the vast number of links was necessary to name it a hypernovel.

Richard Hawley becomes one of the hyperlinked protagonists of the novel thanks to Just Like The Rain. But there is a reason why the song chosen for today's post is another one. As the book is, in fact, a dissertation about the end of the Gutemberg era under the growing power of cyberspace, I started to search for a more inspiring track and came up with a metaphor of what the Net represents nowadays: the immensity of an ocean.

Though the song evokes the feeling of devotion for a lover and the ocean is the meeting place where joy comes true, I prefer to consider it a huge space where everything can happen and in which a human being can do nothing but submerge over and over until becoming part of it. Just like the Net. You lose your identity to be a small drop of salty water travelling through a sea of unexpected currents which eventually ends up in far away shores, in a way that resembles the journey of your different profiles through the unknown dimension of the social networks. Hawley's music really captures the flow of these connecting events between beings and creates an atmosphere of real physical nature (just like the Net?)

The beauty and appeal of the ocean is there for us to enjoy, but then comes the frustrating conclusion of it all: you can't keep the whole ocean in a bottle. I get more and more conviced of the fact that the hypertexted society can cause drowning by accumulation (as it happens with a great deal of endless blogrolls in blogs) and we all have to develop from the current homo sapiens to the homo designans (latin for "he who selects"). Knowing is no longer the major ability; being able to pick up what is relevant by diving into the proper sources has proved to be the way. And that makes me wonder, "should I take a deeper look at my blogroll?"
