"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Y Patrizia cogió su guitarra...

Europa... USA....

And Patrizia took her guitar...

Twenty years ago a teenage girl whose voice and pose made her look a little 'too forward' gathered the best musicians in town to form the band Los Romeos and so hit the national charts singing things like 'bite me on my bum, 'cos there's where I prefer' or 'I do nothing but think of caressing your sweet body the whole day until I get to the place you and I know' and other sorts of exciting harangues. Music and words addressed to ignite the chemistry in the bodies of thousand of teenagers eager to experience new carnal feelings. Well Patrizia is still Patrizia. She's obviously changed, but it looks like she's not the 'reinvention' type. I have the feeling that concepts like 'maturity' or 'experienced' are not in her dictionary for self-definition. In her new project -Lula-, Patrizia still sings about the same basic emotions and she does not get too far from the incoherence which characterizes the young spirit. I guess that's because she wants to show this way. And that's fair enough.

Together with Adela Arrufat (drums) and Félix Ribes (bass), Patrizia Escoín leads the guitar band which moves confortably among the fields of rock, punk and power-pop. But there's nothing surprising in that. What is remarkable is the freedom and ease in their music which one expects to find only in debutants. This is no meticulously-thought pop intended for the masses to like it, nor vague and soulless rock. We get hooked to the third album by the trio from Castellón because we see ourselves reflected on it, because its notes are in our genes, because it does not lie to us.... because we suffer -from resentment, love and incommunication- the same as they.

Lula will be playing at 2011 FIB Villacamp stage on July 12th. I hope the festival will earn them, as well as the rest of local bands, further recognition across the borders of our province, nation, continent.....

I'll start off by saying that I live just 6 miles away from the FIB site and I am not going to be there this year. My hyperacousis won't let me endure the overdose of decibels. It's not that I am hearing impaired, -way the opposite- I hear too well. That is I am so lucky that I am able to go to a concert and receive the full range of frequencies coming through the loudspeakers, so there is not a single sound from a guitar, bass, drum or keyboard that I could possibly miss. My hyperstimulated brain happens to consider this threshold of perception a virtual agression, an acoustic virus coming in from which a straight defense is needed in the form of different sorts of counterattacks such as vertigo, headaches and irritating tinnitus. You may call me an idiot as well as weak when I tell you that not only this year will I not make it to the festival but I have never ever been there either. Well, it is just that masses and heat altogether are not my cup of tea.

This year's International Festival (FIB) is becoming more LOcal (FLOB), since the organisers have called four bands from around the province to join the show for the first time. Let's start with Conecta4, a band from Castellón de la Plana, born from the remains of Fluor Kin, whose  lead singer and bassist David Hernández is also one of the heads behind the most remarkable media project in the area, the website nomepierdoniuna.net. The group are into a very powerful, electric pop path that is deeply rooted in the melodic local indie sound of the nineties, but they have successfully updated it to a fresher point. I had the chance to see them live at Petit Festival in Vall d'Uixó (Spain) last september and I got thrilled to death (so were my ears, literally). I am sure the band will take the breath away of hundreds next July 11th at the Villacamp stage as the tracks of their last work, Silencios, are getting played. I won't be there but I will enjoy it on my iPod, because -as the song title reads- it's no use getting sad about certain things.

The truth is that I don't know where to start. Shall I start at the beginning? I'm not sure where the story starts. I used to think Los Auténticos was the start of it all, but now I know it is not true. Try with the end, then. There is no end to this. So let's just start right in the middle of it.

Yesterday, I was at the premiere of Juan Carlos Tomás's project The Story of Pop Music in Castellón. Juanki, as he is known locally, is a former member of Los Rítmicos and Los Romeos and is currently running the record label Lemon Songs. He has carried out this ambitious research with great effort to compile and spread his knowledge of the last fifty years of pop music in the province of Castellón. The outcome is the proof that, musically speaking, our land has done a lot to become more open-minded, modern and creative through the years. From the book that goes with the 4-CD collection, written by David Hernández Beltrán, one has no doubt that all the musicians involved in this story have done a huge effort to break the barriers in order to exploit the virtues of a land, Castellón, which has historically been inclined to delight in its own miseries instead. But the ones present in yesterday's event were not feeling nostalgic about a time which will never come back, we felt just like re-reading a few chapters of a book which still has lots of pages to be written. Like in Bertrand Tavernier's wonderful film, today's the beginning of it all.

Undoubtedly, the chapter that we all consider the brightest refers to the milestone band Los Auténticos. It did not appear out of the blue, but the happy coincidence of a series of events gave birth to our local Beatles. As I could check out on a recent visit to Liverpool, the city holds the memory of the fab four as a sign of identity not only of the city, but also of a whole time. But we forget about all the bands and musicians who, before them, paved the way for the quartet to land at the right moment in the right place to start the conquest of the world. On a much smaller scale, our equivalent to the Lennon-McCartney label, the duo Villanueva-Morcillo rescued Castellón from its peripheral idiosincracy and showed the way to hundreds of musicians willing to express their creativity in a freer direction. Back then, one could only count on his own passion, will, and ambition, for the means were nil. Those values have probably been their best legacy.

Juan Antonio Morcillo used to play in the 70s in bands such as SherpasLos AstomsC-H-5Motor Tedio, meeting Miguel Ángel Villanueva in the last two. They both, together with Miguel Ángel's brother Pedro Villanueva, and Jesús Gimeno form the band who, showed thousand of youngsters that change had arrived and it was staying for good. It was the beginning of the 80s and the life of the group was too brief. Nevertheless, the freshness of their songs, their talent in songwriting and their confident presence in live shows still remain in our minds. Their expectations to become a big success nationwide were not met, despite their shows in Madrid and TV appearances, and the band split in 1984. They left a good fistful of brilliant, rabidly adictive, full-proof pop songs for us to enjoy.

Los Auténticos were not physically present as a group in yesterday's show, but this 1981 song is present in the collective unconscious of a town, a province, which adopted it as an anthem of a whole generation and a time that has become an endless influence for anyone taking a look inside the history of the people of a small region who, from time to time, clearly state that do not want to be small.

P.S.: Am I the only one who thinks that the song is still waiting for a well-deserved cover?

Una noche en el Tanned Tin, parte 1 (Nick Garrie - Twilight)

LXXVIII
"...and something that I thought would never end
has turned into my friend"

TWILIGHT
Nick Garrie
49 Arlington Gardens
Elephant Records
2009

Nick finished his show at the Tanned Tin festival in Castellón, Spain, performing Wine and Roses, the song he wrote to his mother. He had previously told the story of how her confidence in her son's talent made her repeat time after time: 'son, one day your songs will be known worldwide'. 'That was way before the Internet', he added. Her mum's wish has come true only partly. If worlwide means that Spotify, for instance, can take Nick's music to all continents, then Mrs Garrie was right. But if worlwide means what we usually call general audience, then I'm afraid she wasn't that much. But, honestly, do I seem to be bothered about what the general audience likes?

Nick started his career by publishing The Nightmare of J.B.Stanislas, an album of which there is a lot of literature in the Net, especially due to the story behind its funny distribution. That was 1968 and, since then, Nick has been into the most picturesque activities for a musician, including managing a ski resort or teaching French in a Primary school. The latter is still his occupation. In the meantime, he had time to tour around Spain opening Leonard Cohen's shows in 1984. In 2009 he published 49 Arlington Gardens, a bright, pleasant and emotional work full of taste with which he has put his name back in the limelight. So he said in the opening of his show in Castellón: 'Hi, I'm Nick Garrie... still alive.' No doubt his mum was right.

The second clip is a documentary about what the Tanned Tin is all about.

CABOS SUELTOS
Amigos Imaginarios
Muñecas Rusas
Rock Indiana
2010

(ENGLISH AFTER THE JUMP) Pocas veces una canción me ha retratado de forma tan flagrante como si de un espejo se tratara.

¿Estaré empezando a cambiar?

To begin with, very rarely have I come across a song that so blatantly depicts my innermost being. It is not a model portrait of behaviour, it is just one of an imperfect human being, as all of us are. Nobody is proud of his imperfections, but through the years we somehow learn to accept ourselves without worrying too much about them. Sometimes we even deny them, sometimes we promise ourselves we'll stop being so. And the latter is the case we're dealing with. Santi Campos, the leader of Amigos Imaginarios, describes a series of situations where he feels there are too many loose ends: books halfway read, abandonned friends, words only spoken when they're useless, and so on. The chorus is a prayer where the singer uses the conditional -'I would like to believe that I ain't gonna leave any more loose ends'- just to show his little conviction of the possibility of change. I would also love to believe we can easily change the ways we face life. We have been told how to behave, react and proceed since the day we were born and I want to believe that there is something inside us that makes us do either as we're told, the opposite way or something inbetween. And that something seems to want to stay inside us although we pray to it to go away. In the end, I guess we really don't want to lose it, because it is part of us.

I met Santi while searching for a song with a message as close as possible as the one we were working on in our documentary Ecuapop. We came across the beautiful Permanecer, and it really was as if he had written it on demand. We talked to him before a show in Castellón and he gave us permission to use it even before we had finished explaining what it was for. 'This is no imaginary friend', I thought. Now, I don't come across him any longer, I go searching for him instead. As a reward, I am given a song that, again, seems like it's been written for me. I could talk to him after his flashconcert in Castellón for nomepierdoniuna.net, where he played Cabos sueltos, and I promised I would write this post. It seems to me I shouldn't be leaving this loose end. Does this mean I am starting to change?

Lions and dogs (Van Morrison - Sometimes We Cry)

LXIV
"Sometimes we live, sometimes we die, sometimes we cry"

SOMETIMES WE CRY
Van Morrison
The Healing Game
Polydor
1997

From the very beginning my mum said: "She's got a sad look". We were fifteen years together, and all this time she listened to every single album by Van Morrison that fell into my hands, and she never complained. She didn't care much about housework, so I was a bit fed up with her little concern about leaving her stuff around; clearly, she  got everything dirty instead of cleaning, but then she accepted willingly any suggestion. She would never cook for me, but she always showed excitement every time I came in from work, as if she hadn't seen me for ages. I was so used to her reaction that on many occasions, I simply forgot to greet her back. Nevertheless, the next day she acted as usual, no grudge.  She liked staying at my parents' summer residence for long periods. There she would breathe the fresh air that lacked in town. She got seriously ill several times, but she showed a praiseworthy spirit of resistance. Yesterday she left for good. Today, I have opened the door to my flat and I couldn't keep my teardrops at the sight of the empty corridor.

Senda never considered herself a hound. She refused to mingle with other dogs, and  as the human being that she thought she was, she started to dislike meeting new people as she grew old. She was just faithful to her beloved ones but couldn't be bothered about the rest of the world -the people in the canine residence where she used to stay on certain weekends used to call her "The Lady". As myself, she reacted bitterly to impertinence and bad manners (I don't know who passed it on to whom), and didn't stand out for her licking your cheeks on the bed on Saturday mornings, but I'll never forget her head leaning against my thigh while waiting for the lift to go out for a walk.  Where there was probably no more than natural instinct I wanted to believe that it was  a  true manifestation of love and affection. We gave her an urban and home-loving life, instead of a deserved country and open-air one, but she got used to it and never asked for anything different.  She was part of the family and now I miss her as so. My mum was right: she had a sad look and crying was nearly the only thing she had left to do to be called human.

I have been to several Van Morrison shows throughout the years. The first one in Barcelona, on October 9th, 1996, where I was really surprised by a more-than-two-hour show and several encores, the last one being an advance of his next album, The Healing Game. It was the title track that left the audience out of breath. He was accompanied by the musicians that had toured with him following the A Night in San Francisco magnificent live recording, and he offered the best version of himself: a huge artist, a tremendous display of feeling and a mixture of introspection, fury and ecstasy as I have never again experienced, not even in his next shows. Through the years, Van has started showing no more than a professional performance, no more than one-and-a-half hours of music and one encore, if you're lucky and he feels like it. Rarely does he run wild on stage any longer. But he's Van The Man and will die a surly, unsociable man, not prone to play to the gallery. And I don't mind his being so, even if he hasn't issued another album as good as The Healing Game or there will be no other Astral Weeks. His music will always accompany our lives -it's said he has a song for every mood-, some songs move you, some caress your skin, some lick our face and others just bark at you, but his music never ever deserts you. More than a dog, he is a faithful lion.

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Hay un lugar en Arkansas llamado Pleasant Plains (literalmente, las Agradables Llanuras).

There's a place in Arkansas called Pleasant Plains. There lives a person called Clint McCance. The guy was suggested, as all the community, to wear purple on a specific day to remember the recent loss of several youngsters in America to homophobic bullying. They'd killed themselves. Regarding such campaign, he wrote in his Facebook profile (quote), 'Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers committed suicide. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE' and goes on 'being a fag doesnt give you the right to ruin the rest of our lives. If you get easily offended by being called a fag then dont tell anyone you are a fag. Keep that shit to yourself. I dont care how people decide to live their lives. They dont bother me if they keep it to thereselves. It pisses me off though that we make a special purple fag day for them. I like that fags cant procreate. I also enjoy the fact that they often give each other aids and die. If you arent against it, you might as well be for it.'

I'm sure you have come across comments of this kind via any other social network, or might even have overheard them in conversations on trains or buses. Regardless of the effect or the response that they may have caused on you, no need to say they suck. I wouldn't waste a single minute of my life to write about a chap who's thousands of miles away from me if it weren't for the fact that he is (if he hasn't resigned yet) a member of the Midland School Board in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas. The reactions have been overwhelming. Just google his name to search for updates in his case. What really puts me off is not the comment in itself, but its procedence. First, it comes from a person who holds a post in an educational institution half-run with public funds; secondly, it comes from hatred, thus from fear. The first can be fought back through immediate dismissal, which would give a clear message to all youngsters from their educational authorities that these words are not to be tolerated, but it's the authorities that say this can't be done because he's been elected (for a minor private incident President Clinton was impeached...). The second can't be counterattacked unless education for active respect makes its way into schools (...with which Board members??)

I said the fact that the guy lives in Arkansas is of no importance to me. People who fear what's different are elsewhere, though we don't notice. Just give them the right place and the right moment and they will speak their mouths off with hatred coming from prejudice coming from education at home. To those, I recommend you listen to the chorus in Mint Royale's song.

To the people who hold public office, they must bear in mind they really hold a responsible job. They are public servants, and we choose them to be our guides and good examples of democratic behaviour. Politicians often forget that we are human, moreover, they often forget THEY are human. For this reason, I was so touched by Fort Worth Councilman Joel Burns when he gave his speech at the City Council on October 12th, 2010. From his public post, he gave a message of love and sympathy to all teenagers who are, as he was, suffering from bullying, that positions him as a true and valid social referent. Just what all voters need to see. Everybody's got a small portion of space where one can be powerful: let us all just use it. Prozzäk did it with this anti-bullying and self-assertive song called Be As.

All in all, that's what we need, to fill our world around with positive examples: at work, in the family, in the streets, and be attentive to what happens around, no matter how far... Because, in the end no-one believes there's no other Clint McCance living next door or that Pleasant Plains, Arkansas is so far from Castellón de la Plana, Spain (literally, Castellón on the Plain...)

We often move around hostile environments where personal relationships turn out too tense, rough and utterly unbearable. On many occasions, this stale air puts us in such a stresssful state that it is always the wrong person that ends up getting  a bum rap. We don't notice the seriousness of the situation until it's reached a point of no return, so sooner or later, we start searching for someone to blame. The paradox lies in the fact that, most of the times, the guilty one is hardly ever aware of the mess he's done, furthermore, he may even get surprised at the knowledge of all the grudge he's been growing around. Think of your bosses, if you're lucky enough to be an employee in times like these. Of course, there are excellent bosses out there, but today we're dealing with those who are named bosses but will never become leaders. Those guys despise the problems of their employees with the same indifference as they drink their cup of coffee from their machine of individually encapsulated doses. They make three-dish menus with the panicking hurry of their secretaries as the latter try to meet their sudden and unexpected requirements and then they eat all three dishes in an expensive restaurant where, of course, the current flatterer will pay for.  Finally, before leaving palace, the bags under the eyes of the whole staff will end up in the same glass of the ice that will receive a shower of a pure malt scotch taken from their "humble" office minibar.  Although getting into their minds -rotten by distrust, fear and their own lack of self-confidence- is a hard job, we have our own speech ready for the time when they disappear from our lives -in the hope of us being the first to leave. And we wish them bad luck, not as a revenge, but in the belief of divine justice. Because, when they are not bosses any longer, who will they eat up then? This song is dedicated to this kind.

The chorus in this beautiful song reads: 'If you don't sow, what do you expect but weeds?' If you're skeptical enough you will assume that there are many people out there who have done nothing but sow good seeds and life has given them nothing but pain in return, while others, whose path is full of dead bodies, are presently enjoying a rich life. Maybe this is the only thing they have left, a rich mansion surrounded by the most stinking and damaging weeds.

Too much poetry for such a cruel thing, you may wonder. I say, if none of our farewell words will cause an effect on them because after our leaving their minds will start planning on their next victim, why not killing them softly with this calm tune by Rauelsson? Raúl Pastor, the band's frontman, left his own environment -not sure if he considered it stale- to create a calmer atmosphere where contemplation is central. From Oregon, where he went to follow his studies and met the inspiration for his music, to Castellón, where he elaborated the lyrics of his album La siembra, la espera y la cosecha (Sowing time, wait and harvest time) (2010), Rauelsson presents a solid work, full of personality, that has its roots in the current folk trend of the US western coast (Laura Gibson, Bart Davenport, Loch Lomond) and eventually lands on the Spanish eastern coast like a silent hurricane in slow motion that oxygenates the blurry air that constrains a provincial town that has spent too long contemplating its navel. The EP Debutantes is an advance of this album. Stating that his music is relaxing and comforting might sound too obvious, but it is just true. His lyrics make us stroll around open spaces that are free from oppression, his guitar chords make us fly above the roofs under which all the mediocrity of our world lies, an ordinariness of which we think it's impossible to get out.  He shows us the way to. We can't believe that Rauelsson finds the exact balance between Portland, Oregon and Benicàssim, Spain, two absolutely different realities. Just when we thought life started far off the mountains surrounding our hometown, Rauelsson mixes smells and colours from both continents and helps us find the beauty in our own environment, in the Desierto de las Palmas (listen), in the sea, in our workplace, in our bedroom.

By the way, Santi, the description of the boss does not apply to you.

¡Castellón está fatal! (Hidrogenesse - Estafa)

He aquí algunos ejemplos.

I think nobody's ever going to agree on what art is and what is not. It doesn't matter what scholars say, most people will go on believing that aesthetics is the only valid criterion to end up calling something artistic. Personal impressions are of course important when judging a piece, but there's a lot of intellectual criteria  which are hidden to the mass that only those who have spent years studying them are able to unveil, and these apply to all kinds of art: music, cinema, the rest of visual and performing arts. This intellectual reflection has become the perfect excuse to discredit many contemporary art works that can't be fully understood without it. The work becomes then an object of unaccesible meaning for a big number of people who feel first frustrated and then show refusal -you have surely heard the cliché "I can do that myself". And it finally happens: "Look, I did it!". So we wake up one morning and there they are, in the centre of a roundabout,  a park or blocking your way through the pavement. These daring sculptures coming from the most rotten layers of a so-called contemporary art whose authors and sponsors wish to claim as popular are completely lacking in the necessary dialogue between author and spectator while not failing to portray a sheer representation of shit. Colourful and monumental, though still shit. Dirt instead of beauty in our towns. The local authorities in mine have set up an Embellishment Plan, which has filled the streets with horrifying visual impacts to the glory of antiquated and decadent costumbrist scenes, while the politicians gather around it in inaugurations  proudly proclaiming the benefits to the community of their Maquiavellian plan, a plan in which none of them believe, an Empoverishment Plan with which they can pay all the bloodsuckers back by granting them with the favour of setting up works that, again, none of them would ever dare to have in the garden of their vanguardist villas.

I had been thinking over this reflection for a long time, but now it comes in black and white due to the shocking impression caused by the last work by the famous local artist Ripollés. A huge sculpture in a roundabout that, unfortunately, happens to be on my way to work.

Inspired by the outstanding post in De galerías con Amaury blog, I decided to relieve myself and the chorus in this Hidrogenesse's tune came to my mind at once.

Although the song critisizes ominous people who never find anything right, I don't mind being at risk of being called one. It's just that I need to cry out loud that the Embellishment stuff is a SWINDLE and a FRAUD. The band published this CD single with a karaoke version of the song so that anyone could sing it as they pleased. In fact, Hidrogenesse change their lyrics live depending on where and when they are actually performing. So, I couldn't find a better song to illustrate my anger than this grotesque vaudeville song that sounds like a fairground stall tune. Thank you all the local councils in Spain for collaborating on the country's artistic training. Here's a few examples of the collaboration. As for me, your only achievement has been the self-imposed diversion on my way to work.
