"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

THE EDINBURGH CHRONICLES - PART 1

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) Eighteen years ago I visited Edinburgh for the last time. It was May 1992 and I spent two sunny and warm days in the city. It was not as expected, due to the bad reputation of Scottish weather, but it sort of changed my mind about it -"it is not as bad as they say..."

Eighteen years from then, the city has welcomed me with the sort of weather I was expecting on my first visit: clouds, wind and rain. Not many clouds, more breeze than wind and just a few though persistent drops of rain, but enough to cause an impact on a body coming from the 94 degrees on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

The journey to Scotland was a nightmare. The delays on our train to Barcelona and then on the flight to Scotland turned what should have been a placid seven-hour journey into an eleven-hour ordeal. Midnight at Edinburgh airport is not the place to queue for a taxi unless you want to stand up for hours in the open air, so we decided to take an express bus to the centre and walk to our flat. The tiring day, the weather change and a backache caused by the carrying of the luggage brought about a tremendous reaction on my body and so I had to spend half Sunday in bed to recover.
The view from my window and the menacing clouds above.

The weather wasn't helping but this Belle and Sebastian's tune kept playing in my head as if my heart and soul were longing for a change in the atmospheric situation that would help me pull through. Monday hasn't been that good, but I'm sure that eventually the happy mood from the song will spread over the weeks ahead.

I wanted to start these chronicles with the best Scottish band ever, according to a three-month-long poll done by Scottish magazine The List. There are other Scottish bands I like nearly as much as Belle and Sebastian but as the people from Scotland have clearly stated their likes about it, I won't be the one to state a different thing. So here's the first post on my diary, which intends to be a collection of feelings, experiences and tunes all mixed up while spending summer in this charming city.

"You've got the attic window looking out on the cathedral, and on a Sunday evening bells ring out in the dusk"

Of Amnesia And Magnets (Dessa - Matches To Paper Dolls)

XLIV
"...We've been lovers and strangers and friends who get angry,
Made mistakes and amends and brief moments of magic..."

MATCHES TO PAPER DOLLS
Dessa
A Badly Broken Code
Doomtree Records
2010

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) I used to loathe rap. At some point it stopped being a joyful resource in danceable songs (Sugarhill Gang) and started getting on my nerves in unoriginal performances by some  American rappers showing off their masculinity and joy for luxury and excess in videos within the so-called gangsta rap culture. Furthermore,  some of these performers have so many times been accused of instigating homophobia, male chauvinism and violence in their lyrics and attitudes that put me off it right away. I soon learned that there is not only one single hip-hop culture that spreads throughout the world and in each country it's been characterized by special local features that ultimately conform a compact movement that includes the terms hip-hop, rap and breakdance. In order to shoot the documentary Ecuapop in 2008 we needed to get a few raps for the soundtrack and getting to know Puño en Boka, a Valencian hip-hop band, changed my opinion on this particular style dramatically. They seemed to feel themselves proud to represent the young independent people answering back the contradictions of welfare state society. Their opinions on immigration, banks, politics, neoliberal ideology or freedom shocked the whole crew. There were many ideas that we did not share with them, but all in all I found that, at least, there was still a small refuge for revolution in the landscape of our disenchated youth.

It is said that rap is the poetry of our century, and the statement has fans and detractors. I personally think that it is true only for the role that it plays in culture nowadays, which is the central position in the so-called street culture, a reminiscence of the oral tradition of medieval minstrels, but it lacks the mystery and sense of soul's food that poetry is awarded with. At this point, I came across Dessa. Everything's changed again.

Dessa was artistically born within the Doomtree collective, a self-promoted hip-hop group based in Minneapolis. Her music possesses just what other hip-hop bands lack: non-obvious rhymes, mystery, modesty and she can even sing!! She has made possible for me to be able to listen to a whole rap album non-stop. And she has taught the world that quality, social awareness and good taste are compatible in any hip-hop track:

Matches To Paper Dolls tells the story of the neverending "stumbling over the same stone twice". It is not hard to identify oneself with what she sings and it does not necessarily have to deal with a big social issue in order to label it hip-hop. One can notice her songs are more intellectually-loaded and they carry a softer touch that make them much more accesible than other hip-hop songs, and that just adds towards the universalization of the style and the message. Some people might not agree with this approach, which is just fair, and I think I won't say "I loathe rap" again, but let Dessa have the last word about doing the wrong thing: "this all depends on amnesia and magnets".

(We Are Golden - Just Every Fisher's Folly)

XLIII
"I tell you now I love forever, and I have chosen you to lick my wounds"

JUST EVERY FISHER'S FOLLY
We Are Golden
We Are Golden
We Are Golden
2008

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) Music and performance have always gone hand in hand. If we have reached the point of attending to electronic music concerts, where the closest thing to a performance is the sight of a guy moving his body behind a keyboard under a hectic display of light, there is no doubt that the rest of the music has far more connections with the art of performing.

A clear example of the coincidence of both features is today's band We Are Golden. Not only do we find the breathtaking, powerful voice of Sarah Rudinoff, but we also feel the experience of attending to a complete play when listening to their songs. Sarah comes from the world of musicals in the miracle city of  Seattle, where she became popular performing in Hedwig and The Angry Inch. Her emotional voice gives the compositions the right theatrical turn for the orchestrated stories that Gretta Harley helps to build up on the piano and guitars. The effect caused by all these is similar to the cabaret-like performances by The Dresden Dolls or The Irrepressibles.

In Just Every Fisher's Folly we come across a classical play in three acts, each one of them building a part of the story with words and music that starts with simple and straight-forward declarations, then goes up in crescendo and ends up in a powerful, heartbreaking climax that leaves you on top of an intense summit and then descends abruptly to commence the next act's cycle. Separation, real love, pain, reproach, lies, foolish love again are the compulsory topics in this distressing though beautiful drama that we would never like to live but we definitely wish to listen to on and on.

XLII
"I want more, I want more, just forget the people around!"

I WANT MORE
Estereotypo
Love Your City
Astro
2010

There are times when we think we better stop banging our heads against a brick wall and cry out "to hell with everything". We insist on convincing one another of how we have to deal with our families, our job and with life in general, and that causes anxiety and frustration equally. But it is high time we stop kicking ourselves and instead, admit that people are not so easily convinceable, indisputable as the arguments used for that purpose may be. For this reason, even though we don't care at all about what the rest of the world does, we can still rebel against those who insist, from outside our lives, on sticking their noses in them to lead us into a lifestyle that we haven't chosen.

The First Commandment of our rebelion: Do everything you are told not to provided you are sure nobody gets damaged.

The Second Commandment of our rebelion: Repeat Commandment One as many times as you wish.

These two commandments condense in one: I want more!

We owe to Estereotypo the inspiration to keep on believing in the ability of rock to cheer everyone up. This Spanish band from Santander have managed to lighten up our moods and transmit a full blast of energy to allow us to say yes (and no) to lots of things. For instance, yes to dance. I'm not really into dancing, but I must admit it is impossible to listen to their album while sitting on a chair. And no, to quitting writing about music in a blog that you never know who it is read by or where it ends up, despite all the followers/visitors gadgets you add on it. It looks like this band do as they wish and have a hell of a time. And, even though it may sound as escape music, I'm totally convinced that under their colourful industrial look, there lies thorough work, dedication and, above all, strong principles which will lead them to success. There are times when it is not what you do, but how you do it (take a look at their website to get convinced). We must thank them for their powerful sound that fills the atmosphere with positive vibrations in a time when the world seems to be lacking of them. I won't get into which popular British band they are similar to or whether they sound like this or that electrofunk group. Not today. Today I just want to listen. Today I just want more and more of, lets's say, their latest single.

El amor y el intercambio de ropa (Matthew Sweet - I've Been Waiting)

XLI
"I've been waiting...and I want to have you"

I'VE BEEN WAITING
Matthew Sweet
Girlfriend
Zoo Entertainment/Volcano Records
1991

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) It's very hard to write and sing overtly about love, making it sound truthful without being cheesy. What surprises me is how so many shoddy songs talking about falling in love get so high in the charts. It is true that we all have felt a little idiot saying certain words and phrases to our lovers or a bit uneasy doing the predictable things that lovers are supposed to do, but here's where Matthew Sweet hits the nail on the head. The lyrics are short and simple and they seem to tell us nothing new and the music shows such joyous feeling that he manages to transmit the right mood -just listen to the rollicking guitars and the cheerful back vocals. Nevertheless, it is not the first nor the last song producing this effect on the listeners, but I appreciate the fact that he does not fall back on clichés. There's no "I'll love you till the end of time" or "You are the sunshine of my life". Instead, Matthew opens his heart with the most intimate and truthful offer: "You can wear my clothes". Thinking back, I myself can't find another moment when my present relationship really started to get serious. My lover was wearing my favourite T-shirt.

XL
"I used to live...here"

GENESIS 3:23
The Mountain Goats
The Life Of the World To Come
4AD Records
2009

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) Our lives are made of good and bad memories. Most of the times we wonder whether these memories will stay with us lifelong or else they will leave us alone some time. But hardly ever do we face them with the intention of bringing them back from the past and give them a present life. Of all the memories I have of my childhood the most recurring one has to be with the country house where I used to live.

We used to call it "Pinetree House" after the huge pine tree in the garden that used to provide us with delicious pine nuts every day. I remember running around the fruit trees  and swimming in the pool, which was not built for that purpose but for keeping the water to irrigate the orchard. I even keep pictures of all that, but there is not a single one of the house inside, of which I remember nothing but a blurred image. All in all, for me, it was Paradise. I know that now it lies half abandonned next to newly built ring roads where once only dusty roads and orange trees covered the land. On my mind it is still the big palace where a child spent his innocent years.  Do I really want to go Back to the Old House?

John Darnielle, the leader of The Mountain Goats, couldn't help it and here's the story of how he broke into his former dwelling. The song makes us follow him into the rooms and corridors of someone else's house in an intriguing journey. We see a person facing his past to finally come to realize that Paradise is really lost: "Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken" (Genesis 3:23). The biblical quote is the inspiration for this song in the same way as others from Hebrews, Deuteronomy, Romans, Matthew, etc. are for the rest of the album tracks, though none in a religious sense.

Opposite the irrepressible desire to bring the memories of the innocent times to life again, which is present in Genesis 3:23, there lies the fear of the bad memories to which Morrissey sings in The Smiths' Back To The Old House. Whatever you do with them, memories will always have a bittersweet taste, and we have to learn how to live with it. As for me, I think I'd rather look into the future and wonder where I'll be living the next year...

XXXIX
"...everybody's wearing their hair the way you did fifteen years ago and it makes you wanna cry"

EIGHTIES COMING BACK
Claire's Birthday (aka Ruffus)
Future Is Now
Top Ten
2003

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) To put it bluntly, Eurovision is not and will never be a song contest. That is why great songs never make it to the finals or never get enough points. I am not going to state the obvious complaint about the voting system, nothing is going to change. The reason is simple, a lot of money is made through the televote. Having said so, I would like to present a great song that was on Eurovision not long ago, unlikely as it may seem.

Ruffus were candidates to the Estonian entry in 2003 out of a joke. Vaiko Eplik had been the leader of Estonian independent band Claire's Birthday since 1998 and he had released three albums with it before they decided to become the first indie project ever to make it to the finals of the popular festival. They changed their name to Ruffus, as if they wished not to mix up their serious careers with the camp spirit of Eurovision, and wrote one of the most addictive pop tunes of the last decade. Of course, the song reached the (un)expected 21st position and received no further attention from the music press.

Of course, the band's music is much more than this song. The album where it features has some other great songs that really make you wonder how much good music coming from small countries in Europe we're missing. After the band split up, Vaiko started a solo career and currently his project is called Vaiko Eplik ja Eliit and it is really worth a listening, especially if one likes to listen to music in exotic languages, which Sigur Rós have proved not be necessarily a drawback.

I must confess that since 2003 I only watch the contest hoping there's a slight probability of discovering such unpretencious artists that makes the 4-hour-TV time worth watching. It doesn't always happen. Not this year.

P.S.: Some Estonian readers have pointed out that there was indeed another estonian entry this year that really deserves attention. After listening to it I must say they're right. Here's Malcolm Lincoln's Siren:

No pasa siempre.
