(ENGLISH AHEAD) Mi colega Vicent me viene a decir que Henke suenan como "unos Rammstein algo blandengues".

My colleague Vicent says that Henke sounds pretty much like "Rammstein with a soft touch." I nod in a resigned way because Rammstein is not really my cup of tea, but yet I give him credit. Browsing about all the information the life and deeds of Oswald Henke, the brain in this band, I must infer that he simply can't sit still for a minute, as he is happy creating in multiple disciplines, which makes me pay a lot more attention to him than to Till Lindemann's multi-awarded band. Someone may see Oswald as a pretentious guy who wants to do too many things: theatre, cinema, music ... and presents himself as a kind of Renaissence man of our century. This type of people are always marked down in the same way: either they are hated or envied (which is practically the same), so chances are that they be treated like dirt (to praise him would mean to demonstrate our mediocrity). However, I happen to like this guy, I don't find his work self-indulgent and he has been able to come out as a confident frontman without failing along the way. We know for a fact that people who dare do many things with successful results are not easily forgiven for that. I think what's unforgivable is to be able to do something and not even try to.

PS: In case you missed lesson 7 of your German course, 'Weil ich es kann' means 'because I can'...

A month ago my phone was stolen. Although I had left it in a restaurant and rushed back shortly afterwards, someone had already pinched it. I would have loved to see the thief's face when he realized that its LCD screen was smashed and it wouldn't take very long until it went definitely black.

Since my previous provider Robafone had ominously charged me for Premium text messages that I hadn't agrred on, which I just noticed when I saw the bill, I decided to quit with the company and switched carriers. I accepted ONO's offer for portability (dammed and blessed neologism) and eagerly waited for my new smartphone terminal. A day after the former operator was disconnected I got the new phone by mail, but it showed this recognizable black line crossing the LCD screen. The old one started this way. So I sent it back. Well, it was not until a week that they decided to come and pick it up, because in the store they refused to keep any defective phone as if it would spread a contagious disease. My portability began on January 18. I still have no mobile phone. The only option the company has considered was "unlock the old device." No need to tell you how long and how much I've spent on the absurd world of customer service: inoperative operators, questions repeated a thousand times, transfers from one another, etc. .. . only to solve nothing. If I tell you that my partner's device was also faulty and this one hasn't even been picked up... just multiply our anger by two.

Yesterday the company's supervisor in Madrid told me that the phone was being repaired ("repaired"? I haven't even used it! I've paid a hundred euros for a phone that won't be brand new? Repairing a LCD screen? Isn't this the kind of damage you are told not to repair because the fix costs more than a new one?) and that the deadline to receive it was up to a month (a month!). If today I ask for a whole tea service from China I could get it sooner and in better condition than your mobile. Tele(in)communication company in search of a brain to chair the board of directors. What about concept of "courtesy terminal"?

The curious thing is, I'm so happy without a mobile phone. I am experiencing again the freedom of not being hooked on such evil device. I assure you that there is life without phones, and also that there is life without TV and internet, all these unnecessary necessities created with sole the idea of keeping us hooked on something (something that has to be paid for, of course). But one thing is to feel free and another thing is to feel your an asshole.

In short, I want to have my mobile to be able to hate it, just as Cake does in this song: "no phone, no phone, I just want to be alone today!"

Memorias de tocadiscos, parte 2 (The Hues Corporation - All Goin' Down Together)

CXXXV
"Blackbird sitting on a telephone pole looking for a place to fly
There's a young man sitting in a puddle of mud preparing himself to die

Looks like we're all goin' down together"

ALL GOIN' DOWN TOGETHER
The Hues Corporation
Rock The Boat (single)
RCA-VICTOR
1974

Buen mensaje.

It's amazing how music, being an artistic expression, can turn a terrible and devastating image into something beautiful. Just listen to the beginning of the song -if my transcription is accurate enough: "Blackbird sitting on a telephone pole looking for a place to fly, there's a young man sitting in a puddle of mud preparing himself to die, wheels are turning into fire they're burning and the spokes are getting in our eyes ... looks like we're all goin' down together." A hopeless message wrapped in a sensual though unsettling tune that has revealed itself with all its strength only when I came across it and paid attention to its lyrics after thirty years without playing it -basically because, as many other old records, it's disappeared. I dread to think that, indeed, everything is going to hell while beautiful words are whispered in our ears and we are forced to believe that this is just temporary. Fortunately, yesterday a lot of unionists and civil servants were not happy enough protesting at the gates of the public buildings and decided to climb up the very one main staircase in the beautiful Palau de la Generalitat, Valencia's political heart. Before we go down, we'll make our way through to your offices. Good message.

The B-side of the well-known hit Rock The Boat by The Hues Corporation has come back to me at the right time. I didn't even remember it, but one day my brain was especially relaxed while on a train ride to Cordoba, and I was surprised how it easily tracked on its hard drive to find the first few strains of a song that was already covered in cobwebs in my memory. Within seconds I could fast-forward it to reach the chorus and its key words: "All Goin 'Down Together". Once at my destination, Internet did the rest and I can finally shape an entry which was originally intended to be nostalgic and has eventually become very up-to-date. If I have to fall, let it be to the sound of soul music.

Un día cualquiera (Death Cab For Cutie - The New Year)

CXXXIV
"So this is the new year.
And I don't feel any different."

THE NEW YEAR
Death Cab For Cutie
Transatlanticism
Barsuk
2003

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Ya habrá momentos para ilusionarse.

There will be enough time for excitement, nut not necessarily now. I'm keep it for later. Today is just the day after yesterday, let us not pretend it is so important. It is said that gyms make a killing in January, offering discount year-vouchers for those who want to start the year with the purpose of losing some weight and exercising. Smokers choose this day to make their final decision. Even my students promised me before holidays that this year they will really study hard .... you see. I think the first day of the year is the saddest of all, the cruelest, the most sinister, Maquiavello in disguise: everybody says they are going to do what they know for sure that won't be done. It's the perfect excuse to lie to oneself, for if you really wish to do something, why wait till New Year's Day?

Death Cab For Cutie succeeded with this single from their acclaimed best album to date. This track anticipates the resolution (this one greatly accomplished) to become the American indie reference with a collection of songs that navigate between decadence and dim lights, where brightness sticks out like sunrays through storm clouds. The thing is that the storm is over but it can be felt still present. And that's where the beauty lies, in the space between the grey clouds that hardly shows the pale blue sky. The New Year is the beginning of the album but the end of the storm, which no longer appears in any other track. It is resounding and severe, as each stroke of the guitar, but delicate, as the voice of Ben Gibbard singing "so this is the new year, and I have not made any purpose,"  the height of good taste even when it is to tell you not to look forward to anything while you're still saying and doing what everyone expects you to. No more, no less, than a reality bite (lyrics here).

And I must go. I leave you and your hangover, today I'm taking up a daily jogging session ...

Memorias de tocadiscos, parte 1 (The Love Unlimited Orchestra conducted by Barry White - Love's Theme)

CXXXIII
"(...)"

LOVE'S THEME
The Love Unlimited Orchestra conducted by Barry White
Rhapsody in White
20th Century Records L.A. Records
1974

I have already dealt with how much I miss my old Philips record player, which used to so unmercifully scratch my records and sounded like an ancient radio receiver. However, I was used to that dirty undelicate sound and to me it was just so sweet, especially some records that my sisters had bought and I used to enjoy listening to when I was alone at home.

One of the first singles I can recall is this one by Barry White. No one after him that has attempted a pop song with violins has succeeded half as much, with the bright exception of the Electric Light Orchestra. If you're still in a bad mood after listening to Love's Theme, you really are sick. A magical theme, almost fairytale-like, elusive and profound at the same time, though too cloying for some people ... But, you see, I'm just mad about sweet dishes. So mad that today, instead of the traditional nougat I'm going to dip into a big cauldron of chocolate... White chocolate, of course.

I wish you a very sweet time today and the rest of your lives, and never let anything or anyone turn it bitter.

Iglesia Adoradora de San Bruce y de Todos los Santos de la Calle E (American Aquarium - Katherine Belle)

CXXXII
"Well we started drinking those whiskey and gingers
We drank so much we almost drowned
The jukebox was singing like a choir on Sunday
I did the Boss, she did a mean James Brown"

KATHERINE BELLE
American Aquarium
Dances for the Lonely
Last Chance Records
2009

ComScore

The best / worst thing you can say of an artist is that he has a "distinctive style". He will get stamped with a sort of trademark, a label that, being its creator, one can proudly boast of. Armani dressed by Armani.

However, this style becomes too recurring a pattern for apprentices who engage in blatant copies without contributing with anything new. We all love to wear Armani, or Chanel, in the girls' case. The question is, if we love it, and want to do the catwalk, we'd better do it gracefully, because not everyone can wear everything. So, never, never, put on a fake. You'd be grotesque.

Thank God, American Aquarium dress up in Bruce (Springsteen, not Wayne) and wear the suit so respectfully and with such reverence for the fetish designer that no-one thinks it's a copy. It's just that the model here knows how to bring out the best in each suit. The band of North Carolina (here the review of their last two albums) makes up a tune where Rosalita suddenly becomes Katherine and though not nearly as good as the Boss - who is? - they make us jump and get excited with a rocker spirit that is missing in much of today's music, always taking B-roads when the old rock'n'roll highway still takes you to your the destination much faster.

BRIDGE ACROSS FOREVER
Transatlantic
Bridge Across Forever
Metal Blade
2001

I usually have the defect of underestimating the things I do. It is not that I consider them unimportant, but I hardly ever pay any attention to their impact, quality or value -something to do with modesty, I guess. That's why I felt more than honoured when thanks to the things I write on this blog, I got a call from the website Rock in Spain to join them as a reviewer. That was too nice -especially when it's you that is being looked for, and not vice versa. And the invitation arrives on the very same day of What You're Missing's second anniversary. So I got to work with the first album, the 3-CD live album by Transatlantic, More Is Never Enough.

As I say in the review, prog rock still faces some prejudiced listening, partly wholly justified, but there is no doubt about the musical quality of the compositions. I was particularly struck by the delicate piece Bridge Across Forever, from the album of the same title, which far from the instrumental excess in most of the tracks,  really hits my soft spot with its simplicity and transparency. The song is a 3-way ballad: a piano setting the pace, Neal Morse's voice adding emotion with every single note and a characteristic and languid guitar after the briliant slide style of Steve Howe's in the wonderful Soon (Yes, 1974), which strengthens the melancholy of the the composition at the same time it gives its final epic tone.

What's more, the letter reminds me a bit of a popular and overwhelming fragment in Jonathan Livingston Seagull, quoting:

"If our friendship depends on things like space and time, then, when we finally overcome space and time, we will have destroyed our own brotherhood! But go beyond space, and we will only have one Here. Beat the time, and we will only have one Now. And inbetween Here and Now, don't you think we can meet again a couple of times? "

Interestingly, the song is also talking about those bridges built between people that do not depend on something as "insignificant" as space and time. Bridges in the form of acts and gestures that overcome barriers and become eternal. Not a bad refection to thank every single person that has ever built one's own towards me.

Here's some more Transatlantic stuff, this time as prog-rock as it can get.
