Spanish singer Macaco says that "all the major developments of humanity were achieved gradually, but if you look back through history there is always a particular time, a fuse that ignites everything and provokes dramatic changes. I do not know when it will happen but I guess that it will not be too long. It will be painful, but positive. "I couldn't agree more. Personally, I doubt that a movement like Occupy the Streets will be the cause of that change, because such movement is more a consequence than a cause, it is a symptom of the decline of a system that is no longer sustainable. But we do the right thing when we speak out, complain and get outraged, because with this strong citizen stance, at least, we make it totter and shake. I think that when something is rotten, the woodworm colony has already set a date to its death, it all depends on the voracity of the worms. In the words of Eduardo Salceda, a great guy I met on a recent trip to Bucharest, "revolutions only get rid of what no longer exists." So, adding a last remark to Macaco's quote, when the fuse is on fire it will be signal that the system has self-destructed.

Although it is said that every revolution has its soundtrack, I'd rather think that the soundtrack of a revolution is one, only the tune and the singer change with the times. But the message is the same, no matter how many stanzas and verses it consists of, whether it is end rhyme or blank verse, all variations on the same topic. I guess Pete Seeger's We Shall Overcome or Bob Marley's Redemption Song, to name but a few, would had just been of good use for the people of Paris that took Versailles, the Berliners who hammered their wall down or the Egyptians at Tahrir Square. But we need new songs that highlight what is really happening, and connect with the anger around or, as in the case at hand, with fury.

The Madrid band Les Vivo (here's my review of its outstanding second album) present rather bold lyrics in Esclavo (Slave). Whoever wants to see incitement to violence in it, fair enough, but then I think they haven't understood anything at all. While we accept the official version that the movement of the angry ones is a peaceful citizen response, based on civic values, we are ignoring that what has caused this response are acts of extreme violence.  The fact that there has been no blood does not mean the situation is not without brutality. Evictions, bank scams, the sentences of some juries, the waste of obscene amounts of taxpayers' money, the privileges of the political class, the cuts in basic services and a dreadful number of other instances have led us to cry, enough! So far, we have accepted the demonstrations and and assemblies. But how long will this pacific movement of the angry ones take to become the movement of the desperate ones? What will desperate people who have nothing more to lose be ready to do? How do you think that a slave becomes a free citizen if not with violence? The song is precisely about the subject of the irrational violence that is caused by total despair. When someone reaches such point, either he handles a gun himself, or he votes for someone else who will smash windows around for him. Just ask the Greeks.

¿Una simple ecuación? (Weeping Willows - If You Know What Love Is)

CXLIII
"If you know what love is
Then you'll understand"

IF YOU KNOW WHAT LOVE IS
Weeping Willows
Fear and Love
Grand Recordings / Virgin
2007

If You Know What Love Is.

I don't usually like speaking about love. It's just I am not sure there is anything new to say about it. Without the inspiration that love and heartbreak have instilled on thousands of people since the beginning of times we could not understand what today we call art. Both are almost inevitable forces that affect our lives to such an extent that they are therefore reflected in all kinds of artistic expressions, including, of course, music. And here we have evrything from masterpieces to hard-to-swallow pieces of gooey, cheesy cakes.

However, I like those songs that deal with domestic affairs, not generalized love affairs, which speak of particular greatness and miseries and do not necessarily connect with the experiences of ordinary mortals. Simple songs which sometimes contain a message that is meaningful enough for you.

Again, were back to Sweden, the world's leading exporter of a thing called music, to present a well-known band in Scandinavia which lacks recognition outside the region. They started with a repertoire in which the voice of frontman Magnus Carlson becomes the binder of the feelings of sadness, melancholy and nostalgia that fly over each of the tracks. That chilling languor to which Roy Orbison or Chris Isaak had accustomed us. Their first album (1997) contains the track that should be heard at all hours at the Museum of the Song, called Blue and Alone.

After several years in which the band explored a more commercial as well as indier sound, 2007 left us what is theri last album to date, Fear and Love, where they retake the intimate, folk air of their first compositions. Especially remarkable are The Burden and, above all, If You Know What Love Is. To me, beneath the apparent disappointment story there lies a mysterious message. One of the lovers does not understand why the other feels rejected when in fact his life is littered with hints and clues over how to reach the former easily. Apparently, lover two has serious difficulties to follow these tracks, however, the equation has a simple solution: "if you know what love is, then you'll understand." But really, does anyone know?

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Mi última entrada decía Puede que ocurran cosas.

No importa cuál.

O eso cree el sueco Kristian Matsson, alias The Tallest Man On Earth.

Troubles Will be Gone by The Tallest Man on Earth on Grooveshark

My last post was about things about to happen. Indeed, they have. Some things were expected, too expected. When the intricacies of a rotten system become exposed, you can't be surprised by anything this machinery accomplishes. Moreover, it is very easy to predict what will the next move be.

Inbetween posts, a longer time than I expected, I've spent my time travelling in the deepest sense of the word. I've done so in order to meet people from another country, no matter which one. Moving away from your comfort, your usual context, is a great way to detox from verbal pollution and to put things into perspective. When you're with people who are paid 300 euros a month, who live in a shared flat worth 400 a month in a country where a carton of milk is more expensive than at your local supermarket and still see life with optimism and do not stop making plans you realize that no matter how bad things are going, your misfortune is always relative.

Therefore it is necessary to be optimistic and determined. If you do not like what's going on and there seems to be no way you can change it, there is a place where you will be surrounded by other people, where other possibilities will arise, where you will be able to fulfill yourself instead of being constantly half-pissed-off. Somewhere the troubles will be gone. Or so it seems to the Swede Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man On Earth

Dylan's influence is most evident, but it sounds very personal though because Kristian merely captures the essence of his master to write a story full of light and good vibes. The Tallest Man On Earth creates landscapes where vigour and tenderness coexist in perfect harmony. Another pleasant surprise that comes from Scandinavia, one more to add to my list of favourites coming from up north: Joel Alme, Montt Mardié and the consecrated Kings Of Convenience.

If in ten years time someone younger than me asks me how we ended up in such situation, I just want to be able to answer that was it was in spite of my protest and of the outcry of millions of Spanish people. If in ten years, or sooner, I lose my job for having the misfortune to get a grade 3 sprain in my workplace -which wouldn't be the first time- and having to endure a fiften-day leave, I just want to be able to sleep peacefully -though my foot were in plaster- knowing that my conscience is clean. I know that saying so I am plying that in ten years everything will be worse than today. I don't have a crystal ball, but I have a tendency to pessimism -call it realism- and I do not think the current government is willing to back down on these measures that have been so intentionally stressed as "temporal". For all these things I'm going on strike. Also because if I don't and then with all these strikes, protests and demonstrations, these so-hard-gained rights are preserved, how dare I enjoy them? Will I have the courage to stay convalescent at home instead of limping to work because my leave is getting over the 9-day limit? Can I look in the eyes of those who enjoy their maternity leave without blushing? Will I be able to live in peace with myself knowing that if tomorrow I enjoy these rights is thanks to the struggle of others? My answer is no. I can't concieve a scenario in which I dare complain, I must stand up now. Things may happen, some positive, some infamous, but when the latter occur, I wish it is in spite of me.

Espaldamaceta is the stage name of José Juan González, a singer from Tarragona who suddenly went acoustic while playing with his garage band. He then started writing sad and poetic tunes, in the style of Nick Drake and Silvio Rodriguez. I venture to add Paco Ibáñez among his influences, a songwriter whose soul flies over many of his tracks. It is really difficult to find a singer as close to the protest song movement as him in the XXI century, but if there is a time when people need singers like Espaldamaceta, it is today. Just a slight social touch would be needed to turn him into the one. Some people said the "Occupy the streets" movement lacked a soundtrack. I'm taking this name down, just in case.

I need a break (Claude Debussy - Arabesque I)

CXL
(...)

ARABESQUE I
Claude Debussy
Deux Arabesques
1888
Performed by Stephen Malinowski

I have been spending the past few days trying to work out a new post on some current issue. I wanted to talk about state violence, the kind of violence that no one talks about though it is practiced with so much impunity by the ones who cause it while complaining about a couple of shop windows that have been shattered by a mass of angry fanatics. I wanted to talk about the piece of news about an association of parents which has managed to make Madrid's regional government cancel an educational programme which included, among other things, the advisability of using condoms to prevent getting certain diseases (hello regression!). I was brooding around these subjects when I learned of the death of the great Lucio Dalla and the subsequent controversy over several hypocrisies in the Italian society following the discovery of the sexual orientation of the deceased. All very juicy topics.

However, there are times when your body forces you to take a short break for breath, to see the world from a farther away position. I have a tendency to implicate myself emotionally on certain issues and that, I mean to say, makes me suffer.

That's why I need to turn to my own private paradise. I always feel Debussy's Arabesque I very close and accesible as much as it sounds far and distant, but it adjusts the flow of my body energy and creates a special state of mind to face the future spells of unrest. I might as well fall back on Debussy before I start suffering from the pressure cooker syndrome, so let's lower the heat and let the valve blow off the burning steam before opening the boiling pot.

I also found the perfect music companion to the piece. An animation of the music score that Stephen Malinowski created as a visual project and has applied to both his own work as well as others'.

So it's time to disconnect.

Empieza la leyenda (Radio Futura - Interferencias)

CXXXIX
y otras no"

INTERFERENCIAS
Radio Futura
Divina (single)
Hispavox
1980

Y no me refiero a Operación Triunfo.

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Mi colega Vicent me viene a decir que Henke suenan como "unos Rammstein algo blandengues".

My colleague Vicent says that Henke sounds pretty much like "Rammstein with a soft touch." I nod in a resigned way because Rammstein is not really my cup of tea, but yet I give him credit. Browsing about all the information the life and deeds of Oswald Henke, the brain in this band, I must infer that he simply can't sit still for a minute, as he is happy creating in multiple disciplines, which makes me pay a lot more attention to him than to Till Lindemann's multi-awarded band. Someone may see Oswald as a pretentious guy who wants to do too many things: theatre, cinema, music ... and presents himself as a kind of Renaissence man of our century. This type of people are always marked down in the same way: either they are hated or envied (which is practically the same), so chances are that they be treated like dirt (to praise him would mean to demonstrate our mediocrity). However, I happen to like this guy, I don't find his work self-indulgent and he has been able to come out as a confident frontman without failing along the way. We know for a fact that people who dare do many things with successful results are not easily forgiven for that. I think what's unforgivable is to be able to do something and not even try to.

PS: In case you missed lesson 7 of your German course, 'Weil ich es kann' means 'because I can'...

A month ago my phone was stolen. Although I had left it in a restaurant and rushed back shortly afterwards, someone had already pinched it. I would have loved to see the thief's face when he realized that its LCD screen was smashed and it wouldn't take very long until it went definitely black.

Since my previous provider Robafone had ominously charged me for Premium text messages that I hadn't agrred on, which I just noticed when I saw the bill, I decided to quit with the company and switched carriers. I accepted ONO's offer for portability (dammed and blessed neologism) and eagerly waited for my new smartphone terminal. A day after the former operator was disconnected I got the new phone by mail, but it showed this recognizable black line crossing the LCD screen. The old one started this way. So I sent it back. Well, it was not until a week that they decided to come and pick it up, because in the store they refused to keep any defective phone as if it would spread a contagious disease. My portability began on January 18. I still have no mobile phone. The only option the company has considered was "unlock the old device." No need to tell you how long and how much I've spent on the absurd world of customer service: inoperative operators, questions repeated a thousand times, transfers from one another, etc. .. . only to solve nothing. If I tell you that my partner's device was also faulty and this one hasn't even been picked up... just multiply our anger by two.

Yesterday the company's supervisor in Madrid told me that the phone was being repaired ("repaired"? I haven't even used it! I've paid a hundred euros for a phone that won't be brand new? Repairing a LCD screen? Isn't this the kind of damage you are told not to repair because the fix costs more than a new one?) and that the deadline to receive it was up to a month (a month!). If today I ask for a whole tea service from China I could get it sooner and in better condition than your mobile. Tele(in)communication company in search of a brain to chair the board of directors. What about concept of "courtesy terminal"?

The curious thing is, I'm so happy without a mobile phone. I am experiencing again the freedom of not being hooked on such evil device. I assure you that there is life without phones, and also that there is life without TV and internet, all these unnecessary necessities created with sole the idea of keeping us hooked on something (something that has to be paid for, of course). But one thing is to feel free and another thing is to feel your an asshole.

In short, I want to have my mobile to be able to hate it, just as Cake does in this song: "no phone, no phone, I just want to be alone today!"
