"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

Tener la razón, o no (Great Lake Swimmers - Think That You Might Be Wrong)

CLXII

I never gave you the best part of me
I just let you in charge for a little while"

Seguiremos cantando.

It must be very boring to live without any doubt, in the certainty to possess the absolute truth, speaking from the papal chair and never accepting disagreement. Despite the boring situation, we all know people characterized by the low probability that someday you'll hear them saying 'you're right', people who build a parapet with their ignorance, impossible to surpass with arguments, however irrefutable they are -in fact, the more irrefutable, the harder the walls are risen up against yours. Before these people, either you cease trying to convince them or you end up going crazy. If you want to beat them on something you would have to use brute force and just stick a shoe in their mouth. Whoever has not been in such a situation? Examples abound in our circle of friends and acquaintances, but think about  politicians, bishops, commentators, journalists and other opinion jugglers who are able to turn any discussion into a maddening pelota game.

Just to calm our murdering instinct, I leave you one of the most beautiful songs that I've come across lately. Great Lake Swimmers paraphrase -probably without the slightest intention of doing so- the famous reply "What if you're wrong?" by Richard Dawkins to a student from Virginia who asked him this same question.

In the end there might be a third way, though little explored, to confront those who do not back down easily. What about singing the chorus of this beautiful song? Some would be puzzled at it, though they would not change their minds, but at least we wouldn't be taking it so seriously. I myself would love it to be sung to me, no doubt I'd take the hint.

Vosotros lo sabíais (La Doble Fila - Cinco Días)

CLXI
"Tú que trabajas para Goldman Sachs
me dices que quieres arreglar esto"

la doble fila, viernes de rencor, crisis, desobediencia civil, hip hop, sistema bancario, sistema financiero
CINCO DÍAS
La Doble Fila
Viernes de rencor
Granja Beat-Warner/Chappell
2013

Vamos a llamarla Susi.

I remember the smile of the person sitting in front of me as I was negotiating a fixed-term deposit with my bank as usual. Let's call her Susie. At once I felt she was pulling a somewhat fake face. I could not beleive I was being offered a 100-percent-toxic product instead of the common deposit, aware as she was of my habits, my capital inflow, my usual expenses and my future projects regarding my savings. Susi knew. She knew she was cheating on me. Susie is guilty. In English, some swindlers are called confidence tricksters, and Susie is a con artist, so is her boss, and her superior, and the president of her bank and the Bank of Spain's. I am looking foward to their paying for their crimes in the shortest time possible.

The real world, the one that politicians and bankers do not ever tread, is starting to show signs of fatigue and rebellion. There have always been groups whose lyrics denounced unscrupulous capitalism, the deficit in human rights and other generalities, but never before had songs dealt so accurately with the anger that our closest reality raises on us due to the most glaring cases of corruption, the plunder to civil society, the disaffection towards monarchy, etc. Only a few examples such as Chocadelia Internacional, Les Vivo, Tako or Artos Tos should be enough for any intelligent average listener to get convinced that something is going on out there, and it does not look like going down. Nevertheless, intelligence is no longer supposed to dwell in most of our leaders' minds. By the way, in the meantime the sheeplike population still thinks that national music is represented by each year's Eurovision crap entry.

The sensational Barcelona-based band, La Doble Fila, has come to shout out loud. With its ingenious mix style of hip hop and rock, it has issued an album that I will never stop praising (read the review of Viernes de Rencor here). In the opening track it's the banks and the ones rescuing them with our money that are the target of our national rage. Call it a wake-up call, not a protest. There is no time for complaints. We must take action, disobey, because this is not the result of an accident, 'you did know.'

The track is necessarily inflammatory and the result of despair, though wisely channeled. In these times, it is mandatory to have artistic references who look at the face of society and speak through the mouths of those who cannot. In the present case -it couldn't be otherwise-, Pablo Espadas' megaphone-like voice calls and incites action: there is no turning back, -'te quedan cinco días' translates 'your end is near'. There is no time for putting a band-aid on a gushing wound, let all masks be unveiled. Are those who sank the boat really the ones who are supposed to refloat it? Sorry Susie, but no, "I know you're lying."

I knew I wouldn't be long until I brought up the damn political issue again. The good thing is that this time I have to say nothing, as the band visiting us today says it all. Chocadelia Internacional dissect the situation with the ironic scalpel of their caustic rhyme to announce the end of a dream from an "anartist" position and providing "funk'n'rollin" rhythm and chords. The dream may not be as close as it seems, but the mere fact of singing to it makes it look less and less far. "The newspapers say so", "the air is funny"; can't you smell it you too? It's the stench of the sewer system from which the rats will soon begin to flee... Listen carefully and then do not miss the rest of the album, which holds exactly the same level (read the El fin está cerca album review in Spanish and an interview with Chocadelia Internacional on rockinspain.es). Here's the translation of the lyrics for you to enjoy this fierce philosophy.

Sometimes I think that maybe people are not as stupid as it seems.
Maybe (and I mean maybe) people get what they deserve.
Nobody is forced, no one tells us what to do,
We are where we are because that's where we want to be.

We want to be free of the need to be free.
People are so dependent on the present
That we forget that today can be the past of a better future.
We live beyond our possibilities and below our needs ...
Is there anybody in there MacFly?
And out there ... Is there anyone?

The newspapers say so, I feel it in my bones.
My nerves are broken and that is symptomatic
That the end is near.
Unmistakable signs, the air is funny,
I have all the symptoms, my world is over.
The end is near.

Shoot me down now that I'm so happy:
I have a family like the Ingalls, a villa like the one in Desperate Housewives
And stupid kids like in Physics and Chemistry*.
People laugh through laugh track,
We say that all is well because you gotta to be optimistic in order not to be cruel.

We came out of a dictatorship to enter a mall ...
For God's sake! Is that the psychic basis common to all mankind?
The sleep of reason produces unhappy lives whose only goal is to work, work and work until retirement and then?
Then you die.

(Chorus)

Never saying no.
Never stopping in time.
Never being assertive at the right time.
The End is near.

As many times before, reading newspapers on a Sunday is little more than an exercise in masochism and an attack on one's mental health, so I find in music a little relaxation and this time I do by listening to a rather unique band. Al Berkowitz behave like cartoonists using their tools to create vignettes with a full range of colours, sometimes they are simple stories, other times complex, but they are always personal and mysterious, and most of the times, intriguing. You can read my review of the album on Rockinandblogin.com, but now let's listen to this little waltz that sounds so delicate and transparent (Oh, transparency, we miss you so much!). Hope it feels as touching to you as it does to me.

A handful of memories (Horse Shoes - The Perfect Combination)

CLVIII
"There's something familiar in the air
I can't put my finger on
Some place I've been when I was young
A few scents and some sounds"

THE PERFECT COMBINATION
Horse Shoes
The Imperial School (7-inch)
Shelflife Records
2009

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) There seems to be a time when time is an issue. Of course, I am not talking about childhood, or even adolescence. At some point of your adulthood your memories of long ago are nothing but flashes, small portions of past reality that occupy a tiny space in your brains. The remembrance of certain sounds, smells, colours, drive you into a state where nostalgia and melancholia go hand in hand. Then you are aware of the passing of time. You are an adult, but you can't help thinking about the fact that everything feels too far away. Thus, you start considering that you're just halfway the journey.

colegio menor, castellón, residencia juvenil
Not long ago I was listening to The Perfect Combination as I was strolling down the street past my old school when I was struck by strong flashes from my childhood. I had walked past it hundreds of times as it is not far from home, but the combination of the music with the panning of my head along the building triggered out a handful of memories I had never before recalled all together. The smell of the wet ivy in the yard, the shape of the fences surrounding the block, the greyish paint of the façade... I stopped in front of the main entrance, trying to catch a glimpse of something that reminded me of the big old dark hall I used to cross every day. My school hasn't been a school for ages, that I knew. But there I was, standing still with my eyes fixed on a door and my mind flying some decades back. For a moment I thought I could ask my way in to complete the experience and revive all those memories more intensely. Then the song finished and I took my earphones off. I paused, thought it over and decided I might as well just turn around and head for home. The Perfect Combination exists, but it lasts just a few minutes, say two and a half.

Be Somebody Else! (Eytan And The Embassy - Everything Changes)

CLVII
"How did you end up in this place for so long?
And what ever made you think that this is where you belong?"

eytan and the embassy, 2013, new year, everything changes
EVERYTHING CHANGES
Eytan and The Embassy
Eytan and The Embassy
Autoproducido/Self-published
2012

'How do you stand up straight in a world that puts you down? How do you know what's of this earth and what's divine? Well if you're tired of being yourself, go on and be somebody else'. These are some of the verses with which Eytan and The Embassy build this lighthearted song about the changes in life. This new year, full of resolutions that are almost never fulfilled, Eytan calls for transvestism (a piece of advice clearly visible in the video) to combat frustrations. When all self-help manuals, shrinks and educators strive to convey the importance of being yourself, these crazy New Yorkers tell us that it is time to be like those we admire, to put our masks and wigs on and enjoy life without paying much attention to ourselves. A curious and transgressive view to insist into on the universal themes of 'carpe diem' and 'sic transit gloria mundi' .

The track is so addictive, young and playful that anyone not cheering up must be certainly dead. It start with a keyboard-style like the one in La revolución sexual by Spanish band La Casa Azul and then gets into the territories that Toploader exploited in the hit Dancing In The Moonlight. A little of Motown touch here and a little bit of indie-pop there and the show can begin. A mainstream song that works as much as the old Cheiw bubblegum who had a neverending strawberry flavour. A much sweeter alternative than Josephine's A Freak A, which was already reviewed on What You're Missing, where the singer also encourages us to put on our masks. So, enjoy the year and just be whatever you wish to be.

Happy new year (IMF willing)

Look Ahead In Anger (The Shooters - Against The Storms)

CLVI
"I will fight against the storms
And I will swim across the oceans
Nothing's gonna stop me now"

The Shooters, Planet of the Black Sun, Against The Storms, stoner
AGAINST THE STORMS
The Shooters
Planet Of The Black Sun
Autoeditado / Self-published
2012

(ESPAÑOL ADELANTE) Hard times are not over yet. Nobody knows where the crisis will take us, but I'm pretty sure that the path leading to the finish line (if there is any) is not an easy one. Watching or reading the news every day is becoming a painful activity, since you can't hide a feeling of frustration at the stupidity and incompetence of the people who rule our countries. Each statement of a politician speaking about the steps that need to be taken to "overcome difficulties" is a deadly shot against intelligence, causing nothing else but anger.

However, being myself a pacifist, I defend such anger. An anger that produces the energy needed to stand up against injustice, to say no loud and clear, to face the enemies of equality and never feel comfortable with what the powerful tell you to think and do. Shame on those who suffer the violation of their rights and choose resignation and inaction.

Whatever the message under this song, I can quite feel the anger running through its veins. The Spanish band The Shooters portray a rough landscape of dust, sand and wind where the chorus stands out powerfully carrying the ultimate defying cry against all storms. A cry for survival, in a stoner way (my review of their latest album at rockinspain.es, in Spanish). This band well deserves being followed for its spirit and determination and also for having the ability to infect us with fruitful and inspiring outrage.
