"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

With What You Have To Be Happy With)

XXXVIII
"And when I have some words, this is the way I'll sing: through a distortion box, to make them menacing"

HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE TO BE HAPPY WITH
King Crimson
The Power To Believe
Sanctuary Records
2003

I don't get easily irritated by politicians who are corrupt, don't keep their promises or are simply idiot. Eventually, we can all be corrupt if we surrender to the glaring light of money and leave our ethics behind, in what seems to be one of the most common human weaknesses. Politicians that don't keep promises can ultimately be forgiven due to "reasons of a particular juncture." Stupidity can certainly be grown through the years to a very high standard, but it kind of needs a genetic/educational background to start off, of which very few of us are guilty of. What really gets me on my nerves is the way how politicians treat us as if we were all idiots.

I feel particularly irritated when I heard them speak. Their speeches are so void, grandiloquent, pretencious and demagogic that they can't hide their rotten nature. Shamelessness holds a winning battle against argumentation in which the former is helped by the loudspeakers of today's mass media, so tied up to the different powers that they're unable to criticize the ones thanks to whom they exist. And then it's the people, trying to exercise our right to protest before our blogs might eventually be wiped out from the cyberspace...

I'm not so sure that Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp and company were actually thinking about these category of politicians when they wrote these lyrics, but it really suits me well today. It goes like this: you've got to write a song (a speech) and the process consists of mixing up a few words and say them in a loud voice through a distorting device, so that they sound like a threat (to whom?). Then, make up a stunning chorus (like sentences engraved in stone) and shout it out loud hundreds of times until you literally get exhausted to death. And, if you are asked further on, just mix the same old words up again and produce a new narcotic effect by setting up a more ambiguous answer. And this way they feel happy. Conclusion: a lesson in high Politics.

King Crimson have been working non-stop since the late sixties, though they haven't issued any new material since the album we're presenting today. I won't give many details of the band, for the web is full of them. I only want to remember the funny feeling I got the first time I listened to Larks' Tongues In Aspic, how I enjoyed the U-turn that started with the album Discipline and went on with Beat and rediscovered them in their last two albums. Then I went back to the Court of Crimson King to contemplate the whole Fripp's work during more than two decades. Insufferable at times, mostly brilliant and sublime, he has never surrendered to the music industry, he offers what he's promised in each album and, cold as a psychopath he might look while playing his funny guitars, he suffers of no relevant defect. To top it off, his speech is not addressed to idiots. I wish he were up to election for my constituency!

The Beauty Of Repetition (Archer Prewitt - Good Man)

XXXVII
"Rising to the golden way out in the sky"

GOOD MAN
Archer Prewitt
In The Sun
Carrot Top Records
1997

There's a special component in all the ordinary, in all routines, that creates addiction to them. A routine would never be so if there weren't a certain repetitive pattern that, eventually, becomes invisible. It is, in fact, when we stop to think about what makes our lives routinary that we start to shiver. The pattern works as long as it does not reveal itself as a goal instead of a means.

Psychologists and sociologists have written a lot about what routine means in our lives, but I'm not going to quuote them. A widespread approach regards routine as a highly necessary part of our lives, because it prevents our minds from falling into instability. Another well-known formulation states that routine is the scariest monster, ready to slowly devour your soul without even noticing. I must say I sort of agree with the latter, though my life is full of repetitive actions.

There's a few songs that show such repetitive patterns, but they never end up being boring or lacking in substance, no matter how many times you listen to them. On the contrary, you find value in them to recharge your batteries and face a new day with confidence. One of them has always been Teenage Fanclub's Everything Flows.

We can fight back the humdrum of unproductive routines with more productive ones, instead of giving up all kinds of habits and starting a new life every day, which I find myself completely unable to do. Here's where Archer Prewitt and his repetitive guitar sound bring me back to the stable insistence of beauty and brightness. Listening to Good Man is like an act of contemplation, a mantra that builds its pace through your brain and resets your kharma in little more than three minutes. I call this a joyous and productive experience in its reiteration.

archer prewitt, epitonic, good man

Now, get up, have a shower, have your coffee, drive to work, work, go back home and fall asleep, but don't forget to give your soul enough food a day to make it wish to repeat.

XXXVI - A Xavier Campos Vilanova, IN MEMORIAM

"The ideals you've opted out of, I still hold them to be true; I guess they weren't so firmly held by you."

FROM RED TO BLUE
Billy Bragg
William Bloke
Cooking Vinyl
1996

Eventually David Cameron has managed to give Britain a conservative turn in politics. Why? The answer is simple. He got more votes than his rivals and the mechanics of democracy are but a question of votes. A person is a vote and that's what counts. Victorious politicians will always fall back on the number of pieces of paper with their party's logo on, to legitimate this and that result. Do they ever refer to ideals and principles to justify any political action? In other words, have we witnessed a battle of ideas or just a battle for votes? I personally think that politics are no longer what they used to be. Neither are parties. Nor are the Left and the Right. I am as puzzled about it as Joe Jackson was in 1986.

But one thing I'm sure of if that above the votes and the parties there lies ideology. Many people believe idelologies are like items of clothing which you wear depending on the (political) weather outside or the mood you're in. And here's where Billy Bragg teaches his lesson.

(.....................)

While trying to finish this post and just after writing about lessons in life, I've learnt via Facebook of the death of my very first teacher of English at college: Xavier Campos Vilanova. Thanks to him I am a teacher now, thanks to him I can manage in English at an acceptable level, thanks to him I know the importance of an encouraging word when you are a student and I must confess I have spent all my life trying to learn how to develop his ability to see the potencial behind a person. He suffered bad physical problems in the past years which presumably didn't hurt him as much as the mean gestures from people in his own profession did, but he managed to resist till the end, leaving his example of honesty, work, perseverance, effort and dedication. To top it off, he was a real friendly guy who radiated energy whatever he did. At that time we didn't understand his enthusiasm towards the story of Beowulf, the life and deeds of Chaucer or the gothic mystery of the Castle of Otranto, nor did we see the point in learning Quirk's grammar book by heart, not to mention the insistence on the concept of Albion here and there. Now I regret skipping some of his lessons or simply falling half asleep in my desk unable to process so much information from him. Misfortune has met the coincidence with today's post talking about Billy Bragg singing against those who forget about their principles and the homage to a man who has done a lot more for particular persons than Cameron, Clegg or Brown have or will ever do.  Good examples are within reach of very few people, and Xavier was one of them. Rest in peace.

PS: Jerusalem was the first English poem I ever learnt, years before I even went to college. I had heard it as a teenager by Emerson, Lake and Palmer, when I used to listen to nothing but progressive rock. Today I come across Billy Bragg's version in a day when ends meet and my tears become sweet from the joy of having got to know you. Here it stays, and it will always remind us of you.

Mecanismos de relojería (Garrett Wall Band - Is There No Freedom)

XXXV
"We can't talk of inbetweens when we're both extremes"

IS THERE NO FREEDOM?
Garrett Wall Band
Hands and Imperfections
Mondegreen Records
2009

I learnt about Garrett Wall in the most unsual way. Prudent as I am, I hardly ever take a step without thorough planning, and this applies also to the unpericulous action of buying a CD. Nevertheless, on this particular day, I entered a second-hand shop to search for CD bargains and came across one whose cover reminded me of that of Bob Dylan's Street Legal. "Will it sound similar?", I wondered. I took a further look at the booklet inside and saw the lyrics and a photograph of the guy walking through a crowded street in the famous El Rastro flee market in Madrid and another one of the musicians in a sort of typical tapas bar. I took the risk of wasting 2.5 euros and bought it.

Me pregunté si sonaría parecido.

It looks like Bob is waiting for a bus to stop, while Garrett just follows with his look the one that has just passed by. Bob is somewhat impatient whereas Garrett shows quite a relaxed pose, at least not worried of not having taken it. I quite like the attitude of doing your job honestly without desperatly waiting for your train to catch and taking a smaller carriage that suits you later on, probably one that you've built yourself. Don't forget trains and buses are usually packed up with people trying to get to the same destination as you in a rush hour...

Seeing where Garrett Wall has ended up, I think he's chosen the right way. In this new chapter, he joins a group of talented musicians to form a band that takes a step beyond to what he showed in his earlier work, broading the spectrum of his potencial audience, with a slight folk-oriented sound, highlighting the acoustic elements of his music, and the exploration of the possibilities of blending string and wind instruments together to create joyous sound. His beautiful and personal voice draws the continuing line from the essence of a great musician to the present reality of a true artist.

After the necessary introduction, let us listen to today's song, because there's little more to say. Rarely do two minutes fifty seconds of music leave such good taste in our mouths as Is There No Freedom does. Musically, it has clockwork precision. Lyrically, it is simple and direct, and shows both melancholy and life's acceptance as it is. The vocals of Lua, from the Spanish band We are Balboa, becomes the perfect combination to Garrett's. Just as it happens in The Swell Season's Low Rising, another milestone of songs about relationships in the couple.

I'm sure he's not missed any bus or train, but as we know Garrett is currently living in Madrid, we feel even closer to him and wish him an extra dose of luck: "Break a leg!"

O ... mucha mierda!

Profiles and Networks (Richard Hawley - The Ocean)

XXXIV
"And so you look at me and need the space that means as much to me"

THE OCEAN
Richard Hawley
Coles Corner
Mute
2005

In his recent book, Dublinesca, the Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas tells the story of a publisher who, feeling somewhat frustrated with his job after years of success, decides to travel to Dublin in search of the incarnation of the spirits that dwell in James Joyce's Ulysses. Interesting though it may seem, I'm not going to deal with the story, but with the words with which it's written.

The novel is full of cultural references: museums, books, films, writers and, of course, music. One might see a pretencious move in the author's decision to pack the reading up with criss-crossed references of both popular and minor interest among the readers. Musically speaking, Vila-Matas takes no risks quoting top names like The Beatles (This Boy), Tom Waits (Downtown Train) or Bob Dylan and his Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine), but certainly surprises everyone by mentioning Javier de Galloy's almost unknown cover of Lou Reed's Walk On The Wild Side. The list of other references is endless, which makes me think that Vila-Matas deliberately wished to write a Net-like novel and the vast number of links was necessary to name it a hypernovel.

Richard Hawley becomes one of the hyperlinked protagonists of the novel thanks to Just Like The Rain. But there is a reason why the song chosen for today's post is another one. As the book is, in fact, a dissertation about the end of the Gutemberg era under the growing power of cyberspace, I started to search for a more inspiring track and came up with a metaphor of what the Net represents nowadays: the immensity of an ocean.

Though the song evokes the feeling of devotion for a lover and the ocean is the meeting place where joy comes true, I prefer to consider it a huge space where everything can happen and in which a human being can do nothing but submerge over and over until becoming part of it. Just like the Net. You lose your identity to be a small drop of salty water travelling through a sea of unexpected currents which eventually ends up in far away shores, in a way that resembles the journey of your different profiles through the unknown dimension of the social networks. Hawley's music really captures the flow of these connecting events between beings and creates an atmosphere of real physical nature (just like the Net?)

The beauty and appeal of the ocean is there for us to enjoy, but then comes the frustrating conclusion of it all: you can't keep the whole ocean in a bottle. I get more and more conviced of the fact that the hypertexted society can cause drowning by accumulation (as it happens with a great deal of endless blogrolls in blogs) and we all have to develop from the current homo sapiens to the homo designans (latin for "he who selects"). Knowing is no longer the major ability; being able to pick up what is relevant by diving into the proper sources has proved to be the way. And that makes me wonder, "should I take a deeper look at my blogroll?"

Homage to the Alquimist (MGMT - Brian Eno)

XXXIII
"...we're always one step behind him, he's Brian Eno."

BRIAN ENO
MGMT
Congratulations
Sony
2010

Thanks to my blogger friend RadioDuo's comment, I have been able to beautifully link this new post with the previous one in such a way that the last artist becomes the new song title. And the fact of having a celebrity in a song title brought to mind a few other tracks which follow the same path.

Human rights and arts are the fields from which these celebrities usually come from. We have Peter Gabriel's Biko to honour the South African anti-apartheid fighter's life ("...and the eyes of the world are watching now..."), Cake's Frank Sinatra, using the atmosphere of one of his songs to tell a different story ("...while Frank Sinatra sings Stormy Weather, the flies and spiders get along together...") or a photographer's life's miseries told in click-like rhythm by Manic Street Preachers in Kevin Carter ("...wasted your life in black and white...").

I believe most of these songs are a way to be grateful to the people that have made memorable contributions to the world, either worldwide recognized -Simon and Garfunkel's tribute to architect Frank Lloyd Wright (So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright: "...when I run dry, I stop a while and think of you...") or slightly underrated -Teenage Fanclub's Gene Clark, about the former leader of The Byrds: "...all the seeds you sow are looking for a place to grow...", which points out the seminal feature of his music.

The same seminal attribute is granted to Brian Eno's work in MGMT's song. The band chooses an outsider, a self-considered no-musician, an avantgarde creator of new tendencies, an experimenter, to place him on top of their list of influences ("...he taught me many things..."). What is really original in MGMT's song is they present the artist as a sorcerer and the music displayed evokes The Phantom of the Opera's organ, pulling out from our brains the image of a mad scientist trying out new potions ("I followed the sounds to a cathedral. Imagine my surprise to find that they were produced by Brian Eno..." , "...When I was stuck he'd make me memorize elaborate curses. Tinctures and formulas to ditch the chori and flip the verses..."). After this song, I honestly couldn't think of a better tribute for myself, if I ever deserve one. It happens that, for the time being... I haven't got the whole world behind me.

XXXII
"(...)"

1/1
Brian Eno
Ambient 1: Music For Airports
EG/Polydor
1978

It is interesting to experience situations coming out of the ordinary to focus on reality though in an oblique way. We tend to consider reality as a set pattern of recongnizable events and places which run at the pace of a number of rules that maintain the needed order in our lives. Hardly ever do we notice that among these rules there are man-made schedules which can't beat the unpredictable forces of nature. And then is when our artificial world comes crashing down.

What's an airport without moving planes, without passengers going to and fro, with no bags or luggage, with no voices announcing flights on the speakers? Thousands of Europeans have seen these buildings get empty and deprived of their only reason to exist. Among the concrete walls, notice boards, corridors, stands and uncomfortable seats an awkward draft has cleaned and refreshed the air during a week. The absence of human beings has shown us the dark side of our lives, reminding us of how insignificant our daily routines are, excited as we get from the stress and anxiety of modern life. The emptiness has returned the image of nothingness, of our own death. That's why I think that the urgency of making all airports work again is not because of the need to re-establish the commercial activity but because of the uneasiness provoked by the image of an empty boarding room.

Brian Eno got blocked in an airport way back in the 70s and decided to empty it to let the air run free inbetween the rows of seats in order to make the wait shorter. I call his music "impossible ambient", for the musician is writing about what is not. This way, he subverts the order of things, leaving man naked to the world, depriving him of his comfort and tricks, until he stands alone before the image of his own creation. And then he wonders, "where am I?" And soon, he turns round and leaves without expecting an answer, because, in the end, nobody likes to wait in an empty room.

Mentiras, mentiras (Kings Of Convenience - Rule My World)

XXXI
"Explain me one more time, when they kill it's a crime, when you kill it is justice"

RULE MY WORLD
Kings Of Convenience
Declaration Of Dependence
Virgin/EMI
2009

I am starting to get fed up with the declarations of utmost shamelessness that the rulers of the Catholic Church keep pronouncing every other day regarding the paedophilia scandal inside it. Instead of facing their problems clearly and with honesty, they simply get around them while spraying over us, decent citizens, the guilt over their ill behaviour. The problem is that they don't realise this is the 21st century and the Middle Ages are gone for good. We CAN speak and we CAN tell them: "You're liars and you know it".

I do get angry when I hear things like Cardinal Bertone's words, not because I feel offended,  but because there's still too many narrow-minded people who are unable to adopt a critical approach to those words and simply believe them, and that makes this group a dangerous one. The fact that such words do influence a lot of people makes it all more serious. It's not me uttering a "boutade", it's the second in rank in the Catholic Church! And for that he should face responsibility if discrimination against a specific social group occurs. The open-minded, on the contrary, will always feel free to speak out against all the crap that the Vatican crew is trying to spread all over, in an attempt to regain the power over a population that, to their disgrace, is starting to turn their backs on them.

So, let them hear what we have to say to them: "only someone who's morally superior can possibly and honestly deserve to rule my world". The good thing is that we can say that in a quiet voice, while playing guitar on a beach or on a couch, looking at our beloved one's eyes and kissing the lips that we want to kiss. Such is the power of a song.

I want to thank the Kings Of Convenience for writing such gifted lyrics that will accompany me from now on as a motto in life.  I can't find a more exquisite and simple way to respond to the attacks of perverted minds. It may not seem resounding, but it is mine.

By the way, Mr Bertone, have you ever investigated the connection between repression and sex abuse? Hot topic, isn't it?
