Memorias de tocadiscos, parte 1 (The Love Unlimited Orchestra conducted by Barry White - Love's Theme)

CXXXIII
"(...)"

LOVE'S THEME
The Love Unlimited Orchestra conducted by Barry White
Rhapsody in White
20th Century Records L.A. Records
1974

I have already dealt with how much I miss my old Philips record player, which used to so unmercifully scratch my records and sounded like an ancient radio receiver. However, I was used to that dirty undelicate sound and to me it was just so sweet, especially some records that my sisters had bought and I used to enjoy listening to when I was alone at home.

One of the first singles I can recall is this one by Barry White. No one after him that has attempted a pop song with violins has succeeded half as much, with the bright exception of the Electric Light Orchestra. If you're still in a bad mood after listening to Love's Theme, you really are sick. A magical theme, almost fairytale-like, elusive and profound at the same time, though too cloying for some people ... But, you see, I'm just mad about sweet dishes. So mad that today, instead of the traditional nougat I'm going to dip into a big cauldron of chocolate... White chocolate, of course.

I wish you a very sweet time today and the rest of your lives, and never let anything or anyone turn it bitter.

Iglesia Adoradora de San Bruce y de Todos los Santos de la Calle E (American Aquarium - Katherine Belle)

"Well we started drinking those whiskey and gingers
We drank so much we almost drowned
The jukebox was singing like a choir on Sunday
I did the Boss, she did a mean James Brown"

KATHERINE BELLE

ComScore

The best / worst thing you can say of an artist is that he has a "distinctive style". He will get stamped with a sort of trademark, a label that, being its creator, one can proudly boast of. Armani dressed by Armani.

However, this style becomes too recurring a pattern for apprentices who engage in blatant copies without contributing with anything new. We all love to wear Armani, or Chanel, in the girls' case. The question is, if we love it, and want to do the catwalk, we'd better do it gracefully, because not everyone can wear everything. So, never, never, put on a fake. You'd be grotesque.

Thank God, American Aquarium dress up in Bruce (Springsteen, not Wayne) and wear the suit so respectfully and with such reverence for the fetish designer that no-one thinks it's a copy. It's just that the model here knows how to bring out the best in each suit. The band of North Carolina (here the review of their last two albums) makes up a tune where Rosalita suddenly becomes Katherine and though not nearly as good as the Boss - who is? - they make us jump and get excited with a rocker spirit that is missing in much of today's music, always taking B-roads when the old rock'n'roll highway still takes you to your the destination much faster.

I usually have the defect of underestimating the things I do. It is not that I consider them unimportant, but I hardly ever pay any attention to their impact, quality or value -something to do with modesty, I guess. That's why I felt more than honoured when thanks to the things I write on this blog, I got a call from the website Rock in Spain to join them as a reviewer. That was too nice -especially when it's you that is being looked for, and not vice versa. And the invitation arrives on the very same day of What You're Missing's second anniversary. So I got to work with the first album, the 3-CD live album by Transatlantic, More Is Never Enough.

As I say in the review, prog rock still faces some prejudiced listening, partly wholly justified, but there is no doubt about the musical quality of the compositions. I was particularly struck by the delicate piece Bridge Across Forever, from the album of the same title, which far from the instrumental excess in most of the tracks,  really hits my soft spot with its simplicity and transparency. The song is a 3-way ballad: a piano setting the pace, Neal Morse's voice adding emotion with every single note and a characteristic and languid guitar after the briliant slide style of Steve Howe's in the wonderful Soon (Yes, 1974), which strengthens the melancholy of the the composition at the same time it gives its final epic tone.

What's more, the letter reminds me a bit of a popular and overwhelming fragment in Jonathan Livingston Seagull, quoting:

"If our friendship depends on things like space and time, then, when we finally overcome space and time, we will have destroyed our own brotherhood! But go beyond space, and we will only have one Here. Beat the time, and we will only have one Now. And inbetween Here and Now, don't you think we can meet again a couple of times? "

Interestingly, the song is also talking about those bridges built between people that do not depend on something as "insignificant" as space and time. Bridges in the form of acts and gestures that overcome barriers and become eternal. Not a bad refection to thank every single person that has ever built one's own towards me.

Here's some more Transatlantic stuff, this time as prog-rock as it can get.

Luces en la oscuridad (I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - Lights)

CXXX
"If all you really ask every time is a little fix
Suit yourself or fall a little down agitated and anxious"

LIGHTS
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness
Fear Is On Our Side
Secretely Canadian
2006

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Me quedé con ganas de mostrar más del grupo tejano I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness.

Para mí, el álbum se sostiene entre las cuatro patas que forman Lights, At Last Is All, If It Was Me y el single According To Plan.

I was eager to show more of the Texan group I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness. Especially since The Owl was not my favourite song on the album, but the one that best matched my mood. The truth is that I love the whole work. Need a description? Well, there'a a lot of Joy Division spirit mixed with Talk Talk musical patterns of their less commercial stage and soundscapes very much reminiscent of Robert Fripp's, all displayed in a true gothic rock style that also shares the features with the 80's New Wave bands' darker side. It is not of an easy first listening, but if you take small sips and taste it every now and then through longer periods of time, you'll realise how hooked you've become on it, especially when at full blast.

To me, the album is sustained by a powerful quartet of songs: Lights, At Last Is All, If It Was Me and the single According To Plan. Supporting these four pillars, there are instrumental pieces that provide a counterpoint to the above, like the aforementioned The Owl, the title track, Fear Is On Our Side, or Today, alongside Long Walk, with a thrilling crescendo of guitars in the foreground and The Ghost, heartbreaking and overwhelming.

About Lights, I must point out its magnificent structure with an introduction in which the vocals and guitars prepare the sweeping entrance to the drums and everything comes to a climax in the chorus where the poignant cry of the lead singer, "It's the last time" is added to the bass and guitar electric burst reaching a point of high excitement. My personal favourite on the album. I am still loooking forward to a second album, which is already taking too long.

Haber elegido la muerte... (I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - The Owl)

CXXIX
"(...)"

THE OWL
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness
Fear Is On Our Side
Secretely Canadian
2006

Van dos y uno le dice al otro:
-"¿Qué quieres, un susto o la muerte?"
-"Un susto", le responde.
-"Uhhhh"

Jornada de confusión (Joe Jackson - Right And Wrong)

CXXVIII
"Right and wrong - do you know the difference
'Tween the right and the left and the east and the west
What you know and the things that you'll never see"

RIGHT AND WRONG
Joe Jackson
Big World
AM
1986

Sobre la cercanía (Joel Alme - If You Got Somebody Waiting)

CXXVII
"If you find someone good
That stays when others leave,
That cares for you, that fights for you
You better stay when someone's there
Straight with you"

IF YOU GOT SOMEBODY WAITING
Joel Alme
Waiting For The Bells
Razzia Records
2010

Foto: Mattias Elgemark

It is said that in times of crisis human relations are put to the test. When we do not trust in politics, banks no longer show their friendly face and all sensitivities are skin-deep, our blood is in danger of getting to the boil. To the global apocalyptic situation we are forced to gobble up every day we must add our daily big and small problems, sometimes as apocalyptic as those and try, in spite of everything, to leave home each day showing the best of our smiles.

Putting a brave face would not be so easy if someone does not put an umbrella over us when there's heavy rain out there, someone who closes the drawers you leave open, someone who buys the bread when you've forgotten, someone who lays the table and has prepared tour meal when you arrive late or says I love you before falling asleep at night. And it gets easier even when those not living under your same roof show you with a gesture, a message or an unexpected call that you mean something to them. We all like to be independent and more than once we complain about the ties that bind us to certain people, voluntarily or involuntarily. But whether or not a matter of strategy, the fact is that people need each other more than we wished.

This is what Swedish singer Joel Alme tells us in If You Got Somebody Waiting. A surprisingly short song by today's standards, -only 2:30- that does not need a second more because it is more than complete. The 60's sound that evokes great names in music from both sides of the Atlantic does not discredit it, because it still sounds fresh, up-to-date and free. The whole discography of Joel Alme is still short but it is certainly one to be claimed and has a promising future. In some reviews on the web, Joel has been compared with people like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Hannon, Scott Walker and Jacques Brel, and I won't say it's wrong, but there is something in the voice and music of this guy that really sounds authentic. Maybe that's why you won't see him on Spanish TV.

Vamos a escuchar primero:

My personal admiration towards Santi Campos and all his musical projects since the mid 90's has led me to rescue this masterpiece in which the band Malconsejo writes, after the famous first line of Poem 15 by Pablo Neruda, a clever song of love to all the possible utterances of the beloved, from silence to talkativeness. Musically insurmountable, the group reaches the highest levels of good vibes, which is a concept that I consider central in music, as it creates a mood that people need in times of disappointment, depression and sickness. Let's listen first:

Between silence and talkativeness there is a difficult balance to achieve. Getting to be liked without uttering a word or else being too chatty is complicated, it can result in absolute rejection from the interlocutor. But on many more occasions, there is nothing like keeping your mouth shut. Especially because there is nothing worse than an empty word, the expression of stupidity through allegedly striking phrases, the rubbish wrapped in impossible linguistic turns, the consideration of your partner as an easy-to-manipulate dumb ... why do not you shut up, instead? There are a thousand examples while on campaign, but I had never come across such a case of paranoic-surreal verbal diarrhoea like this (*):

(*) TRANSLATION: "We know what should be done, and it will be done. That's why we are doing what we said we were going to do and that's why we will do what we are bound to do, even though some people out there won't believe that we are going to do what we said we were going to do."

Paradoxically, such ill joke deserves long seconds of applause from a herd that, according to their tastes, would have applauded just as much if this gentleman had gone up to the podium, unzipped his pants and deposited a beautiful and succulent piece of shit for them to enjoy. If we are bound to be ruled by the "intellectual authors" of this speech, my faith in the human race is still at its lowest.

I think I'd better turn down the volume of the news bulletin.
