Una noche en el Tanned Tin, parte 1 (Nick Garrie - Twilight)

LXXVIII
"...and something that I thought would never end
has turned into my friend"

TWILIGHT
Nick Garrie
49 Arlington Gardens
Elephant Records
2009

Nick finished his show at the Tanned Tin festival in Castellón, Spain, performing Wine and Roses, the song he wrote to his mother. He had previously told the story of how her confidence in her son's talent made her repeat time after time: 'son, one day your songs will be known worldwide'. 'That was way before the Internet', he added. Her mum's wish has come true only partly. If worlwide means that Spotify, for instance, can take Nick's music to all continents, then Mrs Garrie was right. But if worlwide means what we usually call general audience, then I'm afraid she wasn't that much. But, honestly, do I seem to be bothered about what the general audience likes?

Nick started his career by publishing The Nightmare of J.B.Stanislas, an album of which there is a lot of literature in the Net, especially due to the story behind its funny distribution. That was 1968 and, since then, Nick has been into the most picturesque activities for a musician, including managing a ski resort or teaching French in a Primary school. The latter is still his occupation. In the meantime, he had time to tour around Spain opening Leonard Cohen's shows in 1984. In 2009 he published 49 Arlington Gardens, a bright, pleasant and emotional work full of taste with which he has put his name back in the limelight. So he said in the opening of his show in Castellón: 'Hi, I'm Nick Garrie... still alive.' No doubt his mum was right.

The second clip is a documentary about what the Tanned Tin is all about.

A oriente de vacaciones (Yellow Magic Orchestra - Light In Darkness)

LXXVII
(...)

LIGHT IN DARKNESS
Yellow Magic Orchestra
Technodelic
Alpha Records - Sony/Epic
1981

(ENGLISH AFTER THE JUMP) Ahora que ya sé que a Japón solo iré de vacaciones, ya no hay motivo para reservarse esta entrada que en principio era para celebrar un viaje solo de ida.

¿Eran o no eran buenos?

Now that I know that I will only go to Japan on holiday, there's no reason to keep this post hidden until the day of celebrating a one-way ticket to the east. The celebration will not happen. Instead of writing from the excitement of going to an exotic land and talking about the contrast of a ancient tradition and modernity, I am going to stick to my little knowledge of the country, musically speaking.

The Yellow Magic Orchestra is THE Japanese band. Probably the most influential Japanese band outside Japan. The talented musicians were lead by the big creative instinct of Ryuichi Sakamoto's, a genius composer who pioneered the blending of musical references from different cultures.

Many people in the Western world still don't know that a lot of the tunes that they hummed here and there during the eighties were literally manufactured at YMO factories in Japan, from where they were sent to conquer the ears of the listeners and, incidentally, a good number of dancefloors. The industrial sound scattered with sometimes harsh rhythmic patterns and catchy tunes from the east came to show that the Kraftwerk Law could also become some entertaining, joyful and more trivial stuff.

As opposed to the rest of the album, where heavy blunt sounds show a somewhat rough and cold scenario (Key, Taiso, Seoul Music), Light in Darkness -and similarly, Epilogue- breathes with a trascending repeated tune that goes up and down, in and out the track (the light), to meet an unusual beat and a playful, original bass line (the darkness) in a perfect blend to provoke an emotional response on the listener. A beautiful conversation between the yin and the yang. And also a dream experience -a dream about hope. There's always some light in the darkness.

I can't conclude without introducing our Spanish equivalent to the Yellow Magic Orchestra. This band just had to change the colours to Azul y Negro (Blue and Black), but they can't deny who they were fans of. So, how do you like them?

Triunfar a tu manera (Whiskeytown - Don't Be Sad)

LXXVI
"I think we lost the keys to the kingdom before we'd seen them"

DON'T BE SAD
Whiskeytown
Pneumonia
Lost Highway
2001

(ENGLISH AHEAD) Quedarse a las puertas.

Yo lo he visto.

The dictionary is full of expressions dealing with failure and disappointment, as opposed to the dull and simple verb “to succeed”. Maybe that’s because the people who have experienced failure in life outnumbers those who actually accomplish their goals. Maybe.

Or maybe not. The line that draws the difference between success and failure is so thin that sometimes the greatest disappointment can become, paradoxically, a springboard towards a complete different challenge to the one you were struggling to get. I have seen it myself. There are people who are able to turn a drawback into a catapult, while others  like me would just see a bottomless pit. They’re an example to follow. Forget about those other “winners”.

Ryan Adams is not a textbook winner. His career has been sprinkled with all kinds of reviews, good and evil ones. I think he has acquitted himself quite well from the attacks, maybe because he has not taken all these critics too seriously. It is true that the Internet is full of not-too-nice comments about his person and work. He has been accused of repeating himself too much, of almost plagiarism, of being too conceited, of always remaining a could-be that, somehow or other, is often lacking in something. I’m talking about Ryan though the post is about Whiskeytown, but to me it’s two sides of the same coin. There’s no Whiskey without Ryan. The talent of the Carolina kid, only hampered by sporadic fits of the Ménière syndrome, keeps on being underestimated in and out of his country. Wonder why. It’s dead easy and convenient to be a U2 fan. The effort lies in betting on an incomplete artist, which is why I consider him a genius. Just check out he lyrics of this song: humans not always succeed. But don’t be sad for that.

An amplyopian world? (Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye)

LXXV
"It's so fun to relate"

LAZY EYE
Silversun Pickups
Carnavas
Dangerbird
2006

(ESPAÑOL TRAS EL VÍDEO) I've been waiting for this moment for a long time ever since I started this blog. I had already come across this song -can't remember how- and I thought it deserved an entry. The lyrics and video don't add much to my personal view on the song but what's remarkable in Silversun Pickup's music is the blending of the grunge influences with bits and pieces of prog rock and metal, to accomplish a dark though emotional pop-approached style where guitar riffs and bass lines play a major role, not to mention Brian Aubert's peculiar voice, which heats up the initial coldness that the listeners face the very first time they meet these sounds. According to the Wikipedia, it's the singer that has a lazy eye, thus the title. The scientific term to it is amplyopia, a brain disorder that results in poor vision in on only one eye, which happens to have no physical malformation whatsoever. I used to have a classmate at primary school with such problem, and everyone could notice about it because he had this patch on his eye that made him look like a pirate's apprentice. I was shocked to learn that the patch was not on the ill eye but on the sane one. As a child, the reason for that took me a long time to understand:  you need to deactivate what is working nicely in order to activate the part of your brain that is lacking in activity. I tend to interpret that the brain is naturally lazy and it will just turn to the hardest rock if not kept moving. Knowing that, eye-laziness has become a metaphor of the attitude towards personal development that I intend for myself. In fact, I keep wondering why we don't see half the population in the world proudly wearing patches on one of both eyes.

LXXIV
"I was following the pack..."

WHITE WINTER HYMNAL
Fleet Foxes
Fleet Foxes
Bella Unión/Sub Pop
2008

Spanish poet Jaime Gil de Biedma wrote about his feeling of life having run so quickly without him realising that the whole thing was in earnest, not until it was too late. I feel something different. I see our lives like tales, small insignificant tales that somehow or other end up where they started after travelling around in circles. We sort of edit our own stuff to make a short film and add our personal soundtracks and hymns to it. We create our own videoclips where we show ourselves to the world. Not only that, but we also upload it to enlarge a massive cyberteque of existence with billions of videoclips that will inspire the lives of the ones to come. So, we'd better shoot good films, don't you think?. Here's a small, insignificant, though inspiring tale by the Fleet Foxes. Hope you enjoy 2011.

¡Cuánto me quiero! (The Pocket Gods - Wanking For Christmas)

LXXIII
"Leave me alone with me and my bone.
Don't wanna procreate, when I can masturbate."

WANKING FOR CHRISTMAS
The Pocket Gods
Xmass - The Pocket Gods and Friends
Nub Country Records
2010

(ENGLISH AFTER THE JUMP) Al hilo del espíritu políticamente incorrecto que anticipaba mi última entrada y con el que quiero acabar el año, deseo compartir con el mundo esta magnífica recopilación de canciones que tiene la Navidad como hilo conductor.

Feliz ¿Navidad?

Supernatural Bread. by Eddie's Brother

Carry On Christmas by The Low Countries

Following the thread of the spirit in my last post, the polically-incorrectness with which I pretend to finish this year, I wish to share with the whole world this wonderful compilation of songs about Christmas time, though Christmas in itself ends up in a sorry state after all. The tracks destroy the myths surrounding this time of year with sarcasm, irreverence and a pagan look into the whole stuff. It becomes then a wild, mostly recreational orgy of sounds and lyrics than eventually ends up being and exorcism of all the evil spirits that have come around us throughout the year. And this is worth a celebration.

How are we going to celebrate? Let's say, with an ode to life and love to oneself. The epitome of the individualism so harshly attacked by Ratzi's Roman Church, a shot at the very heart of reactionary morals, the consecration of every human being's desire: to give pleasure to oneself the moment one wishes. The Pocket Gods overcome the sickly-sweetness of All You Need Is Love to endorse the festive 'all I need for Christmas... is a wank'. Wow!

The Pocket Gods also feature with the rocky It's Christmas But You're Still A Cunt, Eddie's Brother with a letter-like ballad to Santa (Supernatural Bread), Uber Dramm with a petrifying I Killed My Parents On Christmas Day, Kirk with a stark Xmas Blues and The Low Countries with a priceless Carry On Christmas, where they play with all second meanings in each verse to show with underlying anger how child abuse carries on within the Church and this is no topic to rejoice in.

To finish off, a request that many of us would love to make: They Cancelled Christmas, by Grae J Wall and The Young Trash Lovers.

Besides all the irony, there lies a bunch of sensational songs, easily accesible through Spotify, for us to replace the infamous old-fashioned carols that stick to our brains like drills at this time of year. I subscribe to all track titles (except for the Uber Dramm one), and very especially to the one on today's title line. So, I 'd better leave you now 'cos I think there's something I need to do. Well then, Happy Christmas?

Que no te lo cuenten (Ash - Dare To Dream)

LXXII
"Challenge what is possible. You can change the world.
Breaking through the speed of light. You will have to pay the price."

DARE TO DREAM
Ash
The A-Z Series (Vol. 2)
Atomic Hearts Records
2010

(ESPAÑOL TRAS EL SALTO) I am not so sure that I agree with today's lyrics. At least, not fully. It sounds like this Irish band is addressing a grown-up that has had to stop taking chances because everything has gone too far and he is not a rebel young spirit any longer. Am I wrong interpreting? Well I, myself, am no challenger, but as an adult I simply feel more eager to explore than I used to as a teenager, always too shy and scared of the world around. In a way, I believe it is somewhat unnatural for a person to stop being curious at a certain age, though the general impression is way the opposite. As one grows older, the number of stimuli you have been in contact with must necessarily grow bigger and thus the range of different ways to face oncoming events and to make decisions about life gets also wider. Why, as chances multiply, should a person stick to a single way of life, instead of giving other options a try? Probably, and here's where I meet Ash's words, because we "will have to pay the price", and that is what petrifies us. I might be on my way to take new chances, and 2011 might offer me new perspectives, so if this eventually happens I hope this dream does not "break my heart".

Quite a challenge too what Ash decided to do with their latest issue. Instead of recording a set of songs for a new album and then choosing a few as singles to be published periodically, they tried issuing one single a fortnight, one per letter in the alphabet, to make a final compilation with all of them. The task was fulfilled and the result is simply astonishing. The truth is that there really are 26 singles in it. There is not a single track that deserves less attention than another. They've made it, and they're not that young anymore. They dared and won.So, let's be daring ourselves.

Arreglando el mundo (Julie Andrews - Crazy World)

LXXI
"Just when I believe your heart's getting warmer, you're cold and you're cruel"

CRAZY WORLD
Henry Mancini/Leslie Bricusse
Victor/Victoria Original Sountrack
Rhino/Wea/Sony Music
1982

(ENGLISH AFTER THE JUMP) Dentro de poco comenzaremos el casi imprescindible ritual de comidas y cenas más o menos festivas con las que supuestamente celebramos ese espíritu de bondad, solidaridad y fraternidad que a todos sin excepción nos invade en estas fechas.

Yo me pido Victor o Victoria.

Soon we will begin with the unescapable ritual of company and family gatherings with which we will celebrate the spirit of kindness, solidarity and fraternity that we all are supposed to cherish this time of year. Filled with heartfelt enthusiasm for the event, we will attend meetings of fraternization with our colleagues, with whom we get wonderfully well and we do not want to stop sharing our time for a minute, so we will end the feast happily chatting around the table, holding our glasses of spirits and laughing out loud in the way old comrades do.

If such a picture is painted for our beloved fellow workers, no need to tell you of the explosion of happiness in the numerous meals and family dinners, where -between gift and gift- we will give free rein to our repertoire of jokes and remember with joy this and that story when we were young. Life gives us these moments to overcome the heavy burden of problems that threaten us daily. Up with Christmas!

But no, this will not be possible because it is very likely that we  are dragged to these events, our silly workmate's jokes -who
for months has been unable to pull the smallest smiling face and seems to have been the whole year learning them by heart- won't be funny at all, our childhood stories will sound too old and, worst of all, we will drink  far too much and our stomach, increasingly less prepared to accept certain foods will rebel for days. Also, do you know what will the conversations around the table be about ? Begin with the topic you like, they always end up talking about the government, how bad the world is going and about our foolproof recipes on how to fix it. And I am starting to be tired of so many opinions. So sick that I'm almost bored about my own. Especially at Christmas.

Against this background of disgust and disbelief, who would not change the revelry at a table for a glass of whisky in front of the TV, a blanket at our feet and a good movie to reconcile ourselves with the world which can leave  that strange but comforting expression
in our faces caused by the laughter and its constant movement of our jaws. I choose Victor/Victoria. In this film the enormous talent of Henry Mancini meets the Blake Edward's expertise in the direction and the exciting and charming voice of Julie Andrews. The fourth member in the party is lyricist Leslie Bricusse, probably the link that closes the magic circle. The clip featuring here is a summary of what I call happiness. Blake Edwards makes a circular shot around this world full of contradictions that represents the character of Julie Andrews, who in turn, proclaims out and loud how much she loves it.

That's the way I like to feel, although I do not like the present I'm given or the idea of paying us the dinner never crosses my boss's mind.
