"Music is synonym of freedom, of playing what you want and how you want, as long as it's good and made with passion. Let music be love's food."

XXXII
"(...)"

1/1
Brian Eno
Ambient 1: Music For Airports
EG/Polydor
1978

It is interesting to experience situations coming out of the ordinary to focus on reality though in an oblique way. We tend to consider reality as a set pattern of recongnizable events and places which run at the pace of a number of rules that maintain the needed order in our lives. Hardly ever do we notice that among these rules there are man-made schedules which can't beat the unpredictable forces of nature. And then is when our artificial world comes crashing down.

What's an airport without moving planes, without passengers going to and fro, with no bags or luggage, with no voices announcing flights on the speakers? Thousands of Europeans have seen these buildings get empty and deprived of their only reason to exist. Among the concrete walls, notice boards, corridors, stands and uncomfortable seats an awkward draft has cleaned and refreshed the air during a week. The absence of human beings has shown us the dark side of our lives, reminding us of how insignificant our daily routines are, excited as we get from the stress and anxiety of modern life. The emptiness has returned the image of nothingness, of our own death. That's why I think that the urgency of making all airports work again is not because of the need to re-establish the commercial activity but because of the uneasiness provoked by the image of an empty boarding room.

Brian Eno got blocked in an airport way back in the 70s and decided to empty it to let the air run free inbetween the rows of seats in order to make the wait shorter. I call his music "impossible ambient", for the musician is writing about what is not. This way, he subverts the order of things, leaving man naked to the world, depriving him of his comfort and tricks, until he stands alone before the image of his own creation. And then he wonders, "where am I?" And soon, he turns round and leaves without expecting an answer, because, in the end, nobody likes to wait in an empty room.

Mentiras, mentiras (Kings Of Convenience - Rule My World)

XXXI
"Explain me one more time, when they kill it's a crime, when you kill it is justice"

RULE MY WORLD
Kings Of Convenience
Declaration Of Dependence
Virgin/EMI
2009

I am starting to get fed up with the declarations of utmost shamelessness that the rulers of the Catholic Church keep pronouncing every other day regarding the paedophilia scandal inside it. Instead of facing their problems clearly and with honesty, they simply get around them while spraying over us, decent citizens, the guilt over their ill behaviour. The problem is that they don't realise this is the 21st century and the Middle Ages are gone for good. We CAN speak and we CAN tell them: "You're liars and you know it".

I do get angry when I hear things like Cardinal Bertone's words, not because I feel offended,  but because there's still too many narrow-minded people who are unable to adopt a critical approach to those words and simply believe them, and that makes this group a dangerous one. The fact that such words do influence a lot of people makes it all more serious. It's not me uttering a "boutade", it's the second in rank in the Catholic Church! And for that he should face responsibility if discrimination against a specific social group occurs. The open-minded, on the contrary, will always feel free to speak out against all the crap that the Vatican crew is trying to spread all over, in an attempt to regain the power over a population that, to their disgrace, is starting to turn their backs on them.

So, let them hear what we have to say to them: "only someone who's morally superior can possibly and honestly deserve to rule my world". The good thing is that we can say that in a quiet voice, while playing guitar on a beach or on a couch, looking at our beloved one's eyes and kissing the lips that we want to kiss. Such is the power of a song.

I want to thank the Kings Of Convenience for writing such gifted lyrics that will accompany me from now on as a motto in life.  I can't find a more exquisite and simple way to respond to the attacks of perverted minds. It may not seem resounding, but it is mine.

By the way, Mr Bertone, have you ever investigated the connection between repression and sex abuse? Hot topic, isn't it?

Chronicle Of A Disappointment (The Smiths - London)

XXX
"...do you think you've made the right decision this time?"

LONDON
The Smiths
The World Won't Listen
Rough Trade Records
1987

This is the chronicle of a disappointment -or several ones.

I hadn't been to London for a long time. I remembered bits and pieces of my first and last visits -back in 1980 and 1991- and was anxious to experience the same thrill as then. I never did.

No me ocurrió.

Disappointment one: I wanted to buy good stuff at cheaper prices than in Spain, and I remembered I had been to a Virgin store in Oxford Road. As I didn't know the right location, we dediced to walk from Marble Arch and experience the atmosphere in the most commercial street in London. The traffic was intense, a crowd of non-English-speaking tourists carrying colourful bags of some of the hundred multinational stores there was packing up the sidewalks, so it took us nearly an hour and a half to reach Tottenham Court Road. We had passed two HMV shops but didn't get in, waiting for the Virgin one to appear. And there it was, huge premises as I recalled, only there were no CDs inside. Instead, there was a massive array of sportive clothing displayed in a chaotic mess on walls and floor and hundreds of notices saying "Everything at half price till running out of stock". "There was a Virgin store here, wasn't there?" I asked the Indian-looking guy at the entrance. "Yes, but it closed", he answered. "Where is it now?, I continued. "No place", he replied in surprise. I turned round in shame and left the place after getting a pair of Calvin Klein boxers at half price.

Disappointment two: In order to recover from the shock, we headed for Carnaby Street, waiting to meet the wildest fashion in London. What I saw was anything but wild. Just a few souvenir and conventional clothes shops in a pedestrian area made me stop half-way through and turn around for the tube. I wasn't expecting a street full of funny-looking people with spiky hair and pierced all over, but really this was like the main street in my hometown.

London is one of The Smiths' least known songs. It's in a second division album, with B-sides and rarities, but it is definitely one of my favourites. I had for some time thought that the story behind the song was that of a guy living in London that left the city never to return. I was not very competent in English at that time, so I just let my imagination flow with the only help of the feelings that the music rose on me, of which the train-like sounds were the most inspiring. Knowing that the band comes from Manchester and that the guy in the song leaves to Euston, the arrival station of all trains coming from North-west England, the interpretation has to be quite the opposite. It continues the tradition of the idea of the big city attracting the attention of young people looking for excitement in their lives (see The Clash's London Calling). It is an idea that may currently be valid, but only to some extent. People will still go to London searching for some thrill, but I'm afraid the city is not the place where change happens as it did in the 70s and 80s. And I guess the 2012 Olympic Games won't help but add more conventionalism and globalized features to its cultural and social scene.

Disappointment three: Hoping that religious festivities weren't so strictly followed as they are in Spain, we headed for Portobello Road on Easter Monday. To our mortification, only a few shops were open and, of course, not a single market stall was up. Nevertheless, we continued strolling down the road until the nearest bus stop. I was lucky enough to come across a Rough Trade record shop, where I could make up for my frustrated Virgin experience and bought some good stuff there. A few metres away I saw a small record shop -whose name I dare not say- specialized in black music that called my attention. In the tiny pop-rock section I saw copy of Morrissey's Ringleader of the Tormentors. It was thoroughly sealed and there was a sticker on saying "LIMITED EDITION -includes POSTER and BONUS DVD" all at the price of 12 pounds, which I found quite fair. I didn't unwrap the plastic cover until in Spain. My mistake.

Error.

The poster was there, the special bonus DVD, too. Even the booklet with the lyrics. But instead of a proper compact disk I found a black plastic model of the Ringleader CD (very nice, though). I had Morrissey in a video and in a poster, but I couldn't listen to his songs. Seems like Morrissey never took the train to Euston, in the end.

XXIX

Yelle
Pop-Up
Source et caetera
2007

Only a few weeks ago I was moaning about the lack of interesting music coming from France. Today I must change my mind. Soon after that I came across M83 and Sébastien Tellier and my whole perception of French music changed. It looks like the indie scene in our neighbour country is getting specialized in electronic music, Daft Punk and Air being its top names, who have also become a reference. DJs play their tracks at discos all over the world and new talents are starting to come out of view, and even starting to make their way into the charts (Tonight, Yuksek)

Getting down to brass tacks, today we are reviewing Yelle, who is willing to make us dance each and every single track in her album just for the fun of it. Their music sails in the sea of pop for its sounds and for the image attached to it (is there anyone today who can set apart the concepts of pop and image?), and what she is selling is a somewhat kitsch product, full of Almodovarian colour and stimulating naivety where (young?) women take central position. As I know very little French, I can't quite catch the meaning of the song, but from the title is seems that the boys are the ones to blame. I don't know whether the whole thing is about the tiring "girl power" stuff or there is something more to it (comments are welcomed) but I don't really care about that. This is how it goes:

To top it off, here's a remix that is way better than the original, musically and aesthetically. Watching those dancers do their stuff make my whole body move...

Music Inside Music (The Apples In Stereo - Can You Feel It?)

XXVIII
"I feel electric when the meter starts to glow."

CAN YOU FEEL IT?
The Apples in Stereo
New Magnetic Wonder
Yep Roc Records
2007

After a few posts with some sort of "philosphical" approach, I think it's high time we just indulged ourselves once in a while. As well as there are films about films (Truffaut's Day For Night, Minnelli's The Bad and The Beautiful, Wilder's Sunset Boulevard, Tim Burton's Ed Wood, and thousands more...) there's also music about music, and even in a bigger amount than films. Nearly all artists have fallen back on such an exercise of self-reference: from the Rolling Stones, with their iconic It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It), to the ineffable Madonna, showing a great sense of originality in song-naming (Music).

The Apples in Stereo muestran su repertorio de voces y vocoders al más puro estilo Electric Light Orchestra en todo el álbum (escúchese Energy, Same Old Drag ó 7 Stars) y Can You Feel It? no es más que la tarjeta de presentación de un surtido de grandes canciones con las que disfrutar de esa cosa tan simple llamada música desde el minuto cero.

The Apples in Stereo show their repertoire of vocals and vocoders following the Electric Light Orchestra's style in their album (listen to Energy, Same Old Drag or 7 Stars), and Can You Feel It? is nothing but a smart opening to an assortment of great songs with which everyone can enjoy that simple little thing called music from the word go.

Can You Feel It? might not be the best song using this metalanguage, but it isn't just another song either. Robert Schneider, the lead singer of The Apples in Stereo, shows far more emotion and passion for music with a few words than many others who have tried to do the same only to result in a pretentious and cheesy piece of s**t (ABBA's Thank You For The Music). It's not the first time someone reminds us of the sublime gesture of turning up the volume (M.A.R.R.S. did, though in a very cold and repetitive way in Pump Up The Volume), but it is certainly one of the few songs in which music, lyrics and emotion match so simply and convincingly in such a way that I don't need to think of anything except dancing and singing along...  at full blast!

Back To Sesame Street (Bill Wells & Maher Shalal Hash Baz - Liquorice Tics)

XXVII
"(...)"

LIQUORICE TICS
Bill Wells and Maher Shalal Hash Baz
GOK
Geographic
2009

I've recently heard the Spanish writer Julio Llamazares say that most of our personality is defined by a few emotional impacts that we got when we were children. These experiences leave a mark in our lives almost without noticing; in my case, I can't name but a few. We usually remember feelings, sounds, smells or moments of no special relevance which, who knows why, have been stored in our brain's hard disk. I belong to a generation that grew up watching telly and I'm convinced that the stimuli I have received through it have shaped my personality in a way that is completely different to the one my parents have shaped theirs.

Before we all got bombed with the frantic movements of modern game pads, I grew up with the affected characters of Heidi and Marco and the naivety of La casa del reloj. Space 1999, the sci-fi series starring Martin Landau, stole Stevenson's island and Salgari's pirates of the privilege of housing the children's needs for adventure. Living in a land between true life and fiction, the main source for stimuli for the 7-year-old kid I was was this:

I don't know how much of what I am I owe it to Sesame Street, but I dare say quite a lot. That's why the notes of Liquorice Tics (Liquorice Sticks, misspelt on purpose) evoke such familiar emotions. As I said before, the harmonica sounds, the out-of-tune wind section, the playful rhythm of the piano take me back to the moments when the television talked to me face to face, treating me as the person I really was, a child. And I felt good, because those images and scripts were not anticipating the adult world to come, all full of questions and problems. Because of that, I might have grown a sort of naive approach to things which I find so useless nowadays and I really get as angry as Grover did when trying to explain to my students the difference between "in" and "out". They haven't seen Sesame Street.

What Bill Wells and Maher Shalal Hash Baz, a Scotsman and a Japanese, have achieved with this album is beautifully blend the Big Band sound with other styles under the concept of straightaway music, with deliberate out of tune sounds that call on imperfection and so unavoidably connect with our emotions. It's open music, waiting for us to join in with voices and instruments in its subtle walk through the imperfections of life.

By the way, has anyone ever seen anything irregular, as a child, in Ernie and Bert's sharing a flat and a bedroom? Some ill-thinking minds have flagged this situation as "dangerous" to a child's mind. No comment.

Later on, Mazinger Z was on TV. But that's a different kettle of fish.

We Can Work It Out (The Swell Season - Low Rising)

XXVI
"I wanna drink with you all night, till we both fall down"

LOW RISING
The Swell Season
Strict Joy
Anti
2009

A week ago the Oscars were awarded in Hollywood. I wasn't excited about the winners in the musical categories. I will talk about best score in another post, today's the day for best song winner. Years ago, getting this award meant instant success worldwide, but today, unless you're called Bruce Springsteen or Elton John, the film is a massive blast or the song is perfect in itself, I'm sure you won't get anywhere. I haven't seen Crazy Heart, but that does not mean I can't speak about Ryan Bingham's The Weary Kind. I'm afraid it won't be aired in many Spanish radio or TV stations. The song is OK, but I find it somewhat plain and lacking in feeling (which, of course, is an argueable view). Similar circumstances appeared to be two years ago when "half-known" Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová were awarded best song for Falling Slowly, from the tiny film Once. The thing is that I find the latter much deeper in showing emotions and more likely to give you goosebumps.

We didn't know we did know Glen Hansard from Alan Parker's The Commitments, where he played the ginger-haired guitarist in the Dublin soul band. Glen met Markéta while shooting Once, became a couple in real life and then turned themselves into The Swell Season. Here's where Low Rising is born.

Musically speaking, the song plays unconcealed tribute to Van Morrison's emotionally embeded work. From the opening chords a la Into The Mystic, to the horn and strings section to the end of it. Particulary evoking of the Lion of Belfast's music is the unique bass riff in the chorus. Glen's voice seems to emulate Van's most characteristic features. Nevertheless, the song is not plagiarizing at all. In art, where "nearly" everything is invented, the merit lies in the ability to take over what the top figures have done in order to create something personal and singular.

The world of music has been dealing with the crisis in the couple for ages, and we can't deny that these crises are amongst the most unsettling experiences in life. In both Falling Slowly and Low Rising, we feel as if we're sneaking into a couple's life without permission and even feel ashamed of listening to what they're saying, as it really is so intimate. However, the listening always leaves us with a good taste in our mouths, because both of them talk about "taking the sinking boat and pointing it home" and the wish of "coming up". There's always hope to rearrange things in their songs. That's why they're so relieving and so helpful when you want to straighten things up. It's like "the biggest storm ever is on our heads but we've still got each other: your eyes, my eyes, your mouth, my smile and our hands."

Lo de los NI-Nis (Lacrosse - We Are Kids)

XXV
"We need a recount, we need a recount, we need a second opinion and a judge."

WE ARE KIDS
Lacrosse
Bandages for the Heart
Tapete Records
2009

"Somos críos y no podemos decidir".

"We are kids and we can't decide". That's the end of today's song. The Scandinavian band Lacrosse offers a small teenage speech and succeeds in portraying the mental confusion that we all have suffered at least once in our teenage lives. I deal with teenagers every day and all this world of confusion sounds familiar to me. There's strong controversy over a generation of Spanish youngsters, the so-called "Generation NI-NI" (NI-NI standing for Neither study-Nor work) who are supposed to be the reason why the society is rotten. In my view, they're nothing but victims. If they show no interest at all in the training for future careers and prefer living on their parents' income or are unable to endure frustration is because we haven't taught them to live. They've grown up thinking that life is pure joy and the world has been designed to spare them all suffering, so they're not to blame, that's the education they're given. And this is the root of all problems. Quoting Lacrosse, "If you look the other way, you think all of it will disappear, but I'm sad to say that's not how it works". The whole lyrics here.

In my opinion, the solution is hidden behind the problem; it's a question of reversing things. If we look in the right direction, we'll realize they don't study or work because we haven't encouraged them to be curious, we haven't valued work, particularly well done jobs (is it right the winner of Big Brother gets a 300,000-pound pot?). Maybe we are the "Civilization Neither-Nor"... And this is the end of today's social analysis, 'cos this is a music blog.

We Are Kids starts off like Phoenix's 1901 but soon turns into a Joy Division (Disorder) guitar sound with a sweeter, uninhibited, powerful touch that we have recently heard in The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (Young Adult Friction). This is a catchy song (and album) with clever lyrics that admit further interpretation ("We need a second opinion and a judge"). So please, judge for yourselves and give me a second opinion, because I am already starting to get fed up with mine...

Me faltan unas quince.

This blog was born with the intention of publicizing songs that were left unnoticed by the mass media (though, as you can see, it has also moved on to personal or current affairs). Certainly We Are Kids would deserve high positions in the charts (if they were done with some musical criteria). I have already listened to it seven times; there's still fifteen more to come.
